He's moving it alright, so he should be OK. It's not the ball hitting that's the problem, it's the finger being jammed against the bat handle.

It seems Root can bend and straighten his fingers which I assume is a good sign. I am not doctor, I must add.

That's a length ball that has leapt at Joe Root. It's a finger-breaker. You don't want to see that early on.

  5. ouch!

    Eng 30-2published at 9.3 overs

Errm Joe Root has been hit on the glove by one that has spat by Bumrah. He has called for the physio and looks to be in pain.

    England fans hold their breath.

Well there's good news and bad news.....if we carry on at this rate Zak Crawley will hit a sumptuous century and finish 134 not not, but we'll be all out for 160!!!!

    Craig in Norwich

Not sure why Crawley is batting on a different pitch, against different bowlers. Why couldn't Sibley & Bairstow share with him?

  7. Eng 30-2published at 9 overs

Zak Crawley faces up to Axar Patel for the first time. Crawley got out repeatedly to left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya in Sri Lanka and Axar is a similar bowler. England's opener, who looks like a student from a posh university, plods forward and defends.

The way the pink ball is behaving, England might think they have done alright with their team. Both teams could have their merits. It's almost like they have considered what the ball will do, rather than what the pitch will do.

It's not even hindsight that sending our second in-form batsman back to England for two weeks with no cricket wasn't very sensible. It was so obvious at the time!

  10. Eng 29-2published at 8 overs

    Crawley 23, Root 2

Crawley goes for another drive, this time missing and almost getting out in a fashion that reminds me of James Vince. Maybe Crawley was watching Rohit Sharma in the last Test thinking "I want a bit of that".

And with that wicket the India fielders are buzzing again. Joe Root inside edges just short of short leg and then is almost bowled when not offering a shot. It's not spinning. It's just all in the head.

It's the angle. Well done to India. Now it's down to Joe Root to play another mammoth innings.

It's over to Joe Root. Again.

He's just missed a straight one. It was pretty straightforward, but he's played outside the line or the ball.

Bairstow lbw Axar 0 (Eng 27-2)

Listen to that noise. The crowd knew it was going to be out from the first replay. Bairstow had missed a straight ball from Axar Patel and was plumb in front.

England's second wicket falls and they lose a review.
