Well that was a really tough day for England.

They were outplayed when batting and then frustrated by India's batsmen and the umpires.

You can read all about the day in Stephan's report.

Scroll down for reaction and analysis. We'll be back tomorrow morning for day two.

England batsman Zak Crawley: "It is always nice to score a fifty in a Test match but you always want to kick on. I would have liked a few more."

On England's selection: "We have very strong seamers and back our seamers on any surface. It is above my pay grade but I think that was the way they were looking at it. If we had got more runs we could have helped our bowlers out a little bit more."

This was England's reaction earlier when the third umpire gave Rohit Sharma not out for a tight stumping.

I think it was the right call. They were quick getting there, however.

Nick Avery: England not dead. If they can get them out for less than a 100 lead - still could be a game in this.

Sibley has had one good score on a flat surface in the first Test and since then he's done nothing.

With Bairstow, I don't understand the philosophy of taking players out of the team to fly home and then to come back and expect them to perform.

Ben Stokes is really struggling against spin and just doesn't look like he's got his game or his set-up right to face Ashwin or Patel.

And Ollie Pope is a young promising player yet only averages 33 in 15 Tests.

This pitch hasn't spun anywhere near as much as the previous one in Chennai. It was tough but not impossible. It had a very familiar 'England in India' feeling.

  7. 'England like rabbits in the headlights'published at 16:45 GMT 24 February 2021

They were like rabbits in the headlights. They didn’t know how to play or rotate the strike.

India know that this England side, against this spinning ball, don’t have skilful players who know how to play it. And India have better spinners than England do.

England's last four scores are 178, 134, 164 and 112. It is only the fourth time since 1909 that they have been bowled out for under 200 in four consecutive innings.

The England players don't seem to be improving and that is a concern. A lot of the batsmen have been in the sub-continental conditions for a number of weeks now and would have been facing lots of spin.

Today they got done by a very clever left-arm spinner who kept bowling straight.

I'm not sure 'enjoyed' is the best way to describe how England felt about that Kohli wicket. I've never seen Jack Leach look so angry.

It has given England fans a little boost but India end the day just 13 runs behind.

And there ends another action-packed day. It has been a tough one for England despite that late wicket.

This could actually be the final over. Rahane edges short of slip.

Jack Leach is getting better and better, he's improving every day. He worked out that he has to bowl a bit quicker on this surface.

There are only a matter of minutes left in the day. India have not sent out a nightwatchman. Ajinkya Rahane emerges down the long tunnel from the dressing room.

Bowled. Him. The India captain is out.

There really is some frustration in these England celebrations. Kohli has gone back to Leach and inside edged onto his stumps when trying to cut. He is livid.

    England needed that.

Sometimes you see them slow it down and magnify the foot but the third umpire didn't do that either.
