That's a good bit of bowling by Ashwin, going round the wicket to Root. It's obviously a ploy, but only works if there's turn.

  2. Eng 75-3published at 22 overs

There was a fair bit of turn for Ashwin. He was bowling round the wicket and got the ball to turn. Not good for England and their one spinner.

Ben Stokes is England's new batsman. Ashwin has had him on toast so far in the series.

He's gone back to a full-length delivery. It's just clipping the top of leg stump. He's not happy, walking off shaking his head.

Root lbw Ashwin 17 (Eng 74-3)

A big, big blow. The ball tracking shows it would have clipped the top of leg stump - umpire's call. That's enough for India.

You could see how much it meant from their initial celebrations. Kohli was pumping the air with his fist.

Root is out before lunch on day one of the Test.

Height is the only thing that can save England's captain. He looks nervous.

It looked out to me on first look. He hasn't hit it.

    Ashwin is the bowler.

Joe Root is given out lbw! He reviews.

    Massive moment.

  9. Eng 72-2published at 21 overs

Root is going to have a busy Test. England need more runs, his captaincy and he's going to have to bowl a lot. He gets down low to Axar and plays his trademark sweep fine for four.

Crawley gets one that turns and one that goes straight on. Tough.

Looking at the pitch, I would have thought you'd need a second spinner. This team has been picked with England hoping it does plenty. It suggests Stokes can't bowl as many overs and I feel for Dom Bess.

  11. Eng 67-2published at 20 overs

    Crawley 52, Root 11

You can't blame the umpire there. Ashwin was round the wicket and it hit Crawley high. There was a lot going on. Crawley - and England fans - can breathe a little easier.

This pitch is not turning as much as the one in Chennai but it has by no means been easy to bat on.

Ooooo. It's umpire's call on the top of off stump.

    Boos from the crowd.

It has hit Crawley's back thigh as he played forward. He's a tall man. Going over the top?

Danger for Crawley as Kohli sends an lbw decision upstairs...

Crawley is doing what Rohit did in the second Test. He's hit some good balls to the boundary and pounced any time the spinner has got it wrong.

  17. 50 runs

50 for Zak Crawleypublished at 19 overs

This is a fifty Joe Root himself would have been proud of. Crawley gets there from 68 balls by chopping away his 10th four.

It has been a 90-minute highlight reel from England's opener. His side needed it.

  18. Eng 62-2published at 18.1 overs

Glad you're with us Bradley. We won't tell.

There's some competition but I think this is Crawley's shot of the day. An exceptional drive off Axar.

Can't quite provide a photo of my set-up, but here I am sitting in school with a couple of others spread out across a room supposed to be doing a chemistry exam, but in reality I've got my phone tucked behind the computer with my teacher oblivious to it... as yet.

Shubman Gill takes a blow at short leg when Crawley clobbers a sweep into him. The ball has left a pink splodge on his whites. It looks like someone has attacked him with lipstick.
