I'm so impressed with Crawley. He's looked fluent. England have to make use of this opportunity and get the runs up front.

A laptop cake sounds hard. I want to see the finished product later. We should do a Bake Off on these pages one day to fill a rain delay. I'll play the Hollywood role. Stephan can be Mary Berry.

India are rattling through their overs with the spinners one. Two runs come from Axar's latest.

There's a bit of chatter from the keeper, slip, leg slip and short leg India have in place. Root and Crawley both adds singles to the total.

It's a great effort by Ishant to reach 100 Tests. He has never had the mantle of leading the attack. He has always been in the shadow of another bowler.

    Crawley 40, Root 9

This pitch is going to turn a lot on days four and five. Whether we get there or not is another matter. Axar beats the edge of Crawley's bat with one that turns before Root has a word with his younger batting partner at the end of the over. Can he talk him through this innings?

He's done it again! Zak Crawley thumps Ishant through the covers. Crawley will be wishing the IPL auction was next week.

Almost single-handedly he has England scoring at more than 3.5 runs per over.

What was I saying about Crawley and boundaries? Here's another as he responds to Ishant's return by flicking him away.

He has been very good so far.

It's been a really interesting first hour. The India bowlers have tried to bowl a very full length. I don't think we've seen a pull or a cut. The bounce is inconsistent and the ball has turned.

Better work this time from Rohit Sharma prevents Crawley adding a seventh boundary in his breezy knock. He's dealing almost exclusively in boundaries. How long until we see Ashwin?

You can't keep asking the same batsmen to do it. It has to be a team effort.

A quick Google tells me the sun will set in Ahmedabad at 18:41 local time. That's 13:11 in the UK and when it should get really fun.

The first break in this match will be the 20-minute 'tea' interval, by the way, with the 40-minute break between the second and third session.

The second break is 'dinner', which for a northerner is just wrong.

There has been a duck by an England opener in four successive Tests - three in India and one in Sri Lanka. It's the first time there has been such a run since 1909.

This game might have the lot. England have to make the most of the first two sessions before the darkness arrives. These are going to be the best two sessions to bat in this game.

Axar Patel gets one to turn big for the first time and almost to prove a point the TV director pans to a close-up of Joe Root. England have only picked one spinner remember.

Crawley responds by driving for four again. Rohit should have done better at extra cover.
