Bairstow is holding his bat like a lumberjack would hold an axe before taking it to a tree. It's just got a little grey overhead. It's breezy, too. I'm concerned for England's women, who are about to embark on five day-nighters in Derby. That will be chilly.

Tim Gladwin: How is it that Malan can play so well against Australia in T20 white-ball cricket, yet is not even considered for 50-over white-ball cricket? And he is replaced by Root who's in terrible nick.

My moment of the summer has nothing to do with cricket. It came two days ago in Lytham, where I discovered gravy on chip shop fish. Genuine game changer. Makes the batter melt in your mouth.

Moment of the summer? Twelfth man Mark Wood thinking Rory Burns was asking for a cup of tea mid-Test match, when what he actually wanted was a plaster for his finger.

Thanks, Callum. Decent recovery this by England. Remember, they were 0-2 after two balls. Glenn Maxwell is bowling his overs quicker than a hiccup here. All a bit of a phoney war. England milking the singles, Australia happy to be milked.

Marnus Labuschagne gets the double teapot, from bowler and captain, as his poor throw allows England to get back for a couple.

Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings are just milking it at the moment and waiting for the bad ball to arrive.

After one over at the Brian Statham End and then one at the James Anderson End Mitchell Starc is out of the attack again.

    Back comes Pat Cummins.

Glenn Maxwell is doing a good job for his captain here.

  11. Eng 126-4published at 24 overs

Glenn Maxwell is just darting deliveries in at leg stump at the moment. With the long boundary on the leg side, from the end he's bowling at, it's making it hard work for England.

He's gone for just seven off his two overs.

Janet Hopper: Can the champagne moment just be the whole summer of cricket? Carlos reading the shipping forecast, Alison Mitchell's pigeon watch and Andy Zaltzman as the car alarm was going off saying: "That's England's run rate reversing".

  13. Eng 123-4published at 23 overs

Good over for England with seven coming off it.

After a lovely cover drive, Jonny Bairstow picks up a couple more with some excellent running. As Aggers just said these two are rapid. They are hurrying between the wickets.

A change of ends for Mitchell Starc - he's back on at the James Anderson End, where he took two wickets at the start of the innings.

Good start from Glenn Maxwell with just four singles coming off his first over.

I said on Sunday that England would want to take 80-100 off the 10 overs of the mismatch bowling trio of Mitchell Marsh, Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis if they can. I don't think that will be any different today - particulary with the short boundary.

  17. Postpublished at 14:39 BST 16 September 2020

The Big Show, Glenn Maxwell, is into the attack.

Australia have only had one over from their fifth/sixth/seventh bowler combination of Mitchell Marsh, Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis till now so there are runs on over if England pick the right overs.

It's taken six overs, but England have finally managed to manoeuvre a Adam Zampa delivery to the leg-side boundary. It's a glorious, emphatic flick from Jonny Bairstow in truth.

The current run-rate would get England to 267 while six an over would get them to 286. I'd have thought the latter would be the minimum that England would want.
