Sam Billings has given the captain and coach a bit of selection headache. Having someone like him in the squad and showing the form he has, when Ben Stokes does come back, it will be a tricky one. How do you keep him in? Or do you just use him in the squad as a back-up player almost?

The more he plays like this the more you feel he's got a chance of staying in the team. It's a bit like Dawid Malan in the T20 side - he's become the number one batsman in the side - he's almost undroppable.

Chris Woakes is the new man. The wicket hasn't deterred Jonny Bairstow, who crunches the sweetest cover drive for four. He's slipped a gear.

Sam Billings isn't happy with that. It is one of his stronger shots, he plays it well, but with the field they had he was going to get one run at best. Is there not better options for him to get a run?

    Billings c Marsh b Zampa 57 (Eng 210-5)

Big moment! Sam Billings falls to give Australia the wicket they dearly need. It's a bit tame, too. A reverse-sweep at Adam Zampa is toe-ended to Pat Cummins at short third man. Billings lets off a scream of frustration. England were really getting on top.

What a knock. Brilliant, just brilliant. He's paced it so well.

What a fabulous way for Jonny Bairstow to bring up his century. It's been a wonderful knock.

What a way to go to a century! Jonny Bairstow swats Pat Cummins over square leg for six to move to his 10th ODI ton. Remember, he was at the other end when England slipped to 0-2. A hundred from 116 balls, celebrated with a thumping drive down the ground for four.

Sam Billings' half-century is his fifth 50+ plus in ODI cricket. He has one hundred. It's his third 50+ score of the summer and he's also had a 46*.

His fifty came off 53 balls. The last 25 runs came off just 12 balls.

James Hobbs: This series has done Billings no harm at all. He looks right at home in this England side. It’s great that there are so many decent options now. The worries of having to play Vince back in the World Cup seem a world away.

Billings is teeing off against Adam Zampa. This time a slog-sweep for four. Zampa is an outspoken vegan. I'm trying to cut down on my meat consumption. I've also bought a special men's face wash and I'm discovering craft ale. I'm worried I've turned into a hipster.

There was a sign there that there has been a switch in tempo in the game. Sam Billings playing that big shot for six and then Mitchell Starc going to yorkers and slower balls. There might just be a bit of a shift in momentum where England are trying to kick on for the last 15.

You feel, that if they can give wickets in hand, they could double their score from here and get towards 340-350 with the short boundary. But, being four down, they will probably have to delay that onslaught for a bit longer.

Sam Billings is at it again. A maiden hundred in the first game, now a half-century. He's taken his chance in the absence of Ben Stokes.

    Bairstow 93, Billings 44

Billings is trying to move here. A six in each of Starc's past two overs, every shot he is playing loaded with intent. Bairstow is playing with more caution, like a man who is planning on batting for a good while longer.

I don't know if these kind of conversations happen any more in one-day cricket, but the old-school conversation would have been: 'Jonny, you bat through and the rest will try and play cameos around you. If you can get 150, you only need 60 off the next 17 overs, and then Billings, Woakes and Tom Curran can go for it'. I don't know if they talk about that anymore or if it's all throttle down and get going.

I'm starting to worry that Joe Root might never get his hair cut. Sitting in the England dressing room, blond hair peeps out the back of his cap. He looks like a mid-80s centre forward.

I wonder what Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings think is a par score? If two players get in, I think the drinks have come at a perfect time for Australia to break the play up bit.

I think a left and right hand combination, if David Warner and Aaron Finch get going, it's going to be difficult.

  20. Eng 171-4published at 33.2 overs

You don't see this very often. It's a no-ball because Mitch Marsh has knocked the non-striker's bails off in his delivery stride. Bairstow gets two from the free hit to move on to 92.

Of all the changes in cricket in the past few years, a no-ball for the bowler breaking the non-striker's stumps is most daft. I can't think of a good reason for it.
