  1. Birdies on the first for McIlroy and Gotteruppublished at 14:11 BST 10 July

    McIlroy -6, MacIntyre -3, Gotterup -3 (1)

Strong start from Rory McIlroy, who takes advantage of his driving prowess on the par-five first, and records a birdie.

Defending champ Chris Gotterup follows him with a birdie and moves to three under par.

No shots gained for Bob MacIntyre though, as he walks off with a par.

  2. 'Nothing went right' for stunned Schefflerpublished at 14:09 BST 10 July

Scottie Scheffler reflects on missing a cut for the first time in four years: "It felt like nothing was going right.

"I didn't really feel like I played that bad. This golf course can be just tough at times. There's some humps and mounds out there.

"It's a little different now with some of the signature events not havingcuts. But I don't think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.

"So I'm definitely proud of the consistency and wish I had a couple of days over the weekend to kind of make up some ground. But yeah, overall, get down to Birkdale [for The Open] a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.

"But this week for me is a week that I really wanted to play well. And this is a golf course I feel like I can play well on. I just haven't in the past for some reason."

Rory McIlroy’s approach at the first fizzed off the back and almost finished in a spectator’s pint.

He did well to pick up his drink off the ground and get out of the way!

  4. 'Best golf of my career' - Fitzpatrickpublished at 14:01 BST 10 July

Matt Fitzpatrick says he's in the form of his life as he eyes a fourth title of the season.

The Englishman's early blitz of five straight birdies paved the way for a 65 today that leaves him just a shot off clubhouse leader Jordan Smith.

"This stretch of sort of March, February onwards to now, it's definitely the best golf I've played in my career for sure," Fitzpatrick said.

"Just felt like I did everything pretty solid. I feel like fortunate enough to say that a lot this year.

"I feel like I hit more in the fairway today. Gave myself some chances to hit my irons close and took advantage of that as well. I putted solid for the last couple days, and hopefully keep that up over the weekend."

    Rai +2, Spaun -1, Lowry E (1)

Plenty of major pedigree in the group in front of me on the first green.

Aaron Rai and JJ Spaun get a polite round of applause after two scrappy bogeys, while there’s much more enthusiasm for Shane Lowry’s opening birdie.

The crowds on this part of the course are only going to swell with Rory McIlroy and Bob MacIntyre heading this way.

We'll bring you Scottie Scheffler's thoughts shortly on his shock early exit.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy is now under way alongside Bob MacIntyre and defending champion Chris Gotterup.

  7. Postpublished at 13:46 BST 10 July

    Scheffler 72 (E)

So Scottie Scheffler isn't invincible after all.

A four-year run of 78 successive cuts made is ending as the world number one packs his bags before the weekend.

Four bogeys and just two birdies today have sealed his fate.

  8. Fitzpatrick back to within one of leadpublished at 13:38 BST 10 July

    Fleetwood -3 (70), M. Fitzpatrick -8 (65)

After a brilliant round all day, Matt Fitzpatrick finishes in style, rolling in his short putt for a birdie.

That moves him to eight under and just one shot off Jordan Smith, the current clubhouse leader.

Tommy Fleetwood's second comes up short, but he does well to par the last, leaving him on three under and looking likely to be here for Saturday and Sunday's action.

  9. Scheffler on brink of missing cutpublished at 13:34 BST 10 July

    Scheffler E (72)

Scottie Scheffler stands over the ball, wedge in hand, and watches his line over and over.

It just doesn't happen for him though, and he has to reassess before standing over one of the biggest putts he's had on a Friday afternoon for some time.

Just shy of seven feet, it looks relatively straight with a touch of movement, slightly uphill.

It's moving in slow motion and just won't turn, trickling along the right edge and refusing to drop.

A bogey at the last means Scheffler is now even par for the tournament.

Given the cut line has been fluctuating between one and two under this morning, the world number's run of 78 consecutive made cuts is set to end.

    Lee -5 (1)

Things you love to see. Min Woo Lee has just hit driver off the deck on the par-five first to reach the green in two.

A full-bloodied whack from 288 yards with the big stick.

Two putts and it's an opening birdie to lift the Aussie to five under.

  11. Postpublished at 13:27 BST 10 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -3, M. Fitzpatrick -7 (17*)

Needing a birdie on the par-three ninth to boost his hopes of staying for the weekend, Scottie Scheffler's approach falls short of the green and rolls back.

Not ideal for the world number one, not ideal at all.

Matt Fitzpatrick sticks one in just three feet from another birdie, while Tommy Fleetwood is just off the front edge too.

Honestly, watching the guys tackle the afternoon shift is going to be pure entertainment because the early starters definitely got the better end of the weather stick.

  13. 'Re-energised' Smith feeling goodpublished at 13:24 BST 10 July

Jordan Smith is quite rightly pleased with his day's work after setting the lead on nine under with a 63.

“Yeah, just really, really happy," the Englishman tells BBC Scotland. "I had three weeks off, put the clubs away for a week and then came back re-energised and looking forward to this next stretch.

"I just had some good swing feelings out there and yesterday was probably one of the best full strike days I've had for a long time.

"So things are feeling good. I'm in a good mental space and just need to keep it going.”

  14. Fitzpatrick drops to two off leadpublished at 13:20 BST 10 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -3, M. Fitzpatrick -7 (17*)

A nine-footer for Matt Fitzpatrick's par takes a right-hand turn at the last second, as he drops back to two off the lead.

Scottie Scheffler settles for par, he likely needs to birdie the last to have any hope of sticking around for the weekend.

Despite his wonderful approach, Tommy Fleetwood leaves a shot out there and walks off with an underwhelming par.

    One more to go.

  15. Postpublished at 13:15 BST 10 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -3, M. Fitzpatrick -8 (16*)

A sensational effort from Tommy Fleetwood as he zips one to six feet for a birdie.

Matt Fitzpatrick gets everything he can on his second shot and just manages to find the front edge of the green. A similarly tremendous attempt for different reasons.

No heroics from Scottie Scheffler though, he dumps his approach in the greenside bunker and has to splash it out and hope it puts the brakes on.

  16. Postpublished at 13:15 BST 10 July

The projected cut line is now two under, meaning Scottie Scheffler may need a birdie in his final two holes to make the weekend.

Jon Rahm is also currently one shot below the cut line.

  17. Postpublished at 13:09 BST 10 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -3, M. Fitzpatrick -8 (16*)

Spot of bother for Matt Fitzpatrick as his ball finds the right rough.

He's got roughly 230 yards to the hole, but simply advancing it down the fairway may be all he can muster from here.

No such issue for Scottie Scheffler or Tommy Fleetwood - they're in prime position in the middle of the fairway.

  18. McIlroy poised for actionpublished at 13:05 BST 10 July

Rory McIlroy gets his second round under way in around 40 minutes.

The Northern Irishman shared the lead on five under after day one, but is now four adrift of clubhouse pace-setter Jordan Smith.

Here is a reminder of some of McIlroy's best bits from yesterday.

  19. Fizpatrick moves one off leader Smithpublished at 13:01 BST 10 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -3, M. Fitzpatrick -8 (16*)

Matt Fitzpatrick has an outside look at eagle on his 16th - the par-five seventh - it's on a decent line but not enough oomph behind it, and it trickles off to the left.

He tidies up for a birdie, though, to move to eight under and just one shot off leader Jordan Smith.

Scottie Scheffler can't find another gain though and remains precariously perched on the cut line, one under.

A birdie chance for Tommy Fleetwood is well seized as his 20-foot putt drops nicely.

  20. Smith sets clubhouse leadpublished at 12:46 BST 10 July

    Smith -9 (63)

Jordan Smith taps in for a par at the ninth to complete a hugely impressive round of 63.

He leads by two shots as it stands.
