    McIlroy -9, MacIntyre -4, Gotterup -6 (10)

Three two-putts and three pars for this marquee trio.

The 10th is a tricky hole, so they won't complain about that outcome.

  2. Wiesberger plummetspublished at 16:43 BST 10 July

    Wiesberger +1 (13)

Bernd Wiesberger's Scottish Open fortunes this week sum up the vagaries of golf rather succinctly.

The Austrian was joint leader overnight on five under - but is currently six over for his second round.

He reached the turn in level par, only to go double bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey.

At one over for the tournament, he could well be heading for the exit this evening.

“Chris Gotterup didn’t have to try and hit that tee shot,” a punter says within earshot.

Gotterup opted for an iron off the tee, making sure he found the short grass.

“I mean, he is still walking to his ball it’s that far down there,” his pal clamps him.

    Everyone’s an expert.

Trying to see what this group are doing is a bit of a challenge, the crowds are five or six deep at times.

Sure, they are all a big draw in their own right, but three big guns are in the following group.

People have staked their spot to catch them passing through shortly.

    Schauffele +2, Scott -1, Reitan +2 (10)

Xander Schauffele lifted the trophy here four years ago but is in real danger of missing the cut this time.

The American is two over for the tournament after a fourth bogey of the day on the 10th.

A flurry of birdies required now if he is to make the weekend.

Adam Scott also starts the back nine by dropping a shot, to slip below the cut line, while Kristoffer Reitan is alongside Schauffele on two over, having made a double-bogey six on the eighth.

  7. Birdie for MacIntyrepublished at 16:26 BST 10 July

    McIlroy -9, MacIntyre -4, Gotterup -6 (9)

Bob MacIntyre has had to stay patient today, but he gets his rewards on the par-three ninth, sticking his tee shot close and draining the subsequent putt.

He gets to four under with his first birdie of the day, while Rory McIlroy and Chris Gotterup walk away with pars.

JJ Spaun opts for a three wood down the tenth fairway. The metallic clank it makes off the club face is so pure.

Driver for Aaron Rai who has to shout fore as it veers towards a crowd on the right.

Ryder Cup hero Shane Lowry up next, with a drive that finds the fairway.

Well, as far as I can tell from all the way back at the tee squinting into the sun.

  10. Bogey for Thorbjornsenpublished at 16:21 BST 10 July

    Thorbjornsen -7 (11*)

Michael Thorbjornsen had moved into contention with four birdies today, but he leaves himself one of the slipperiest putts on the course at the second after overhitting his approach shot.

A three-putt results in his first bogey of the day and the American drops back.

If Rory wins this and The Open next week he will have had one of the greatest two-year stretches in golf. Let’s hope he bring it home.

Three major championships between this trio, with Aaron Rai the most recent winner at the PGA Championship.

They’re all battling to stick around for the weekend as they make the turn, though.

JJ Spaun birdies the par-three ninth to improve his chances.

Both Rai and Shane Lowry make par as their fight goes on.

  13. Birdies for McIlroy & Gotteruppublished at 16:11 BST 10 July

    McIlroy -9, MacIntyre -3, Gotterup -6 (8)

No mistake from either Rory McIlroy or Chris Gotterup, who both played that hole perfectly - booming drives, well-judged pitches and successful putts.

McIlroy moves into a share of the lead with Jordan Smith, with defending champion Gotterup three back.

Bob MacIntyre tidied up for an eighth straight par.

    Koepka -2 (11)

Brooks Koepka looks down accusingly at the 11th green after a birdie putt sneaks wide of the hole.

The imposing American is two over for his round and looks a bit disgruntled after playing so well yesterday.

  15. Monster drives set up birdie lookspublished at 16:06 BST 10 July

    McIlroy -8, MacIntyre -3, Gotterup -5 (7)

Fair to say Rory McIlroy and Chris Gotterup are attacking at the eighth hole, with drives of 381 yards and 390 yards, respectively.

They both flick a wedge in and leave two very makeable birdie putts, but Bob MacIntyre is a fair bit further away and would likely take a two-putt par.

Nonsense I’m afraid, David @15:29. Scottie doesn’t miss ONCE. The fact that he has is indicative of someone short on form and confidence, not of someone who's gonna tear it up next week.

A birdie putt for Bob MacIntyre soon turns into a par putt. He is up and out of it before it's finished moving, not his best attempt. He tidies up for par.

Rory McIlroy though, sinks his birdie putt from 14 feet. It drops in off the back of the cup, an excellent attempt.

Will we get another birdie from Chris Gotterup to round us off on the seventh?

No, he will not. Par it is for last year's champ.

  18. Postpublished at 15:50 BST 10 July

    McIlroy -7, MacIntyre -3, Gotterup -5 (6)

Bob MacIntyre manages to get his ball to stop right in the heart of the green, a tricky look at birdie will follow.

Rory McIlroy next from the back of the green, he purposefully overshoots the pin in order to use the slop but it slides back to the left.

From pretty much the same spot, Chris Gotterup lands it short of the slope and has the easiest birdie putt of the three coming up.

Some proper bomb and gouge stuff here.

Bob MacIntyre flings one as far as he can, but it stays in the rough down the right.

Chris Gotterup and Rory McIlroy make it to the green... and through it.

They're both short-sided on the far side.

    Thorbjornsen -7 (9*)

The wind is starting to gust at The Renaissance Club, but there are still birdies to be made.

American Michael Thorbjornsen plays a perfectly judged approach shot at the 18th - his ninth hole - which finishes right next to the pin.

    A tap-in birdie, lovely.
