  1. Birdie for Fitzpatrickpublished at 16:56 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick E, Rose +4 (10*)

    Matt FitzpatrickImage source, Getty Images

Just a simple misread from Scottie Scheffler on his nine-foot birdie putt on the first hole, but at least he's looking a little more like himself with that approach (he missed the fairway again though).

Matt Fitzpatrick reads his putt from a couple of feet closer perfectly though for a birdie to get back to level par for the tournament.

  2. Matsuyama bounces backpublished at 16:54 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -3 (16*)

Well, well, Hideki Matsuyama was just toying with us. He's just nailed a 20-footer for birdie and back he goes to three under par.

He's having himself a fine round. Three under today and one back from Alex Smalley.

  3. Birdie for Bob as Gotterup slips uppublished at 16:49 BST 15 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +3, Fleetwood +5 (11*)

Bob MacIntyre has been sliding down the leaderboard today but he finds some much-needed respite at the second with a stellar approach to eight feet setting up a birdie to regain the shot he dropped at the previous hole.

Chris Gotterup leaves himself a 16-foot left-to-righter for birdie and he lips out on the left...and then he misses the tiddler coming back!

A really sloppy first bogey of the day for the American.

Par for Tommy Fleetwood too but the Englishman needs a few birdies with holes running out.

Luke Donald may ended up beating his whole Ryder cup team here! Playing captain in Ireland…

    Josh, Manchester

There are now 2 Fitzpatrick brothers competing on the PGA Tour. Please can you be sure to always clarify in your posts which brother you are referring to? Thanks!

    Rebecca, Edinburgh

    Absolutely, and thanks Rebecca!

Alex tees off at 17:10 so we'll have both on the course very shortly.

  5. Bogey for Thomaspublished at 16:46 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas E (10*)

Justin Thomas is unable to salvage himself on the first (his 10th) and walks away with a bogey to slip to level par.

A chance for Cameron Young goes by as well as he hangs his birdie putt low and has to settle for par.

  6. Matsuyama slips backpublished at 16:43 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -2 (15*)

Once again, a trapdoor opens as someone hits the front.

Hideki Matsuyama's flawless round suffers a blemish at the sixth (his 15th) as he misses from five feet.

When I last updated at 16:23, he had a share of the lead. Now he's two back.

    Ladies and gents, that's golf.

  7. Scheffler finds a fairway!published at 16:42 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +4 (9*)

Scottie Scheffler finally finds a fairway off the tee for the first time today as he lands on the short stuff on 18 - and then sets up an outside birdie try with a nice approach to 25 feet.

It's only a par though, unlike Matt Fitzpatrick who sinks his birdie effort from 15 feet away to finish his front nine with back-to-back birdies and turn one over for his round and the tournament.

Scheffler is two over so far today and Justin Rose is four over for both his round and the tournament, and after starting the day looking at the leaders is now facing a battle to make the cut.

  8. Postpublished at 16:37 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas -1 (9*)

We've just seen the contrasting fortunes of playing partners.

Justin Thomas is swamped left in some thick rough and can only find more heavy stuff by the side of the green with his second sot.

Cameron Young meanwhile is in the centre of the fairway and able to spin a delicate wedge 10 feet from the cup.

    Birdie chance to come.

  9. MacIntyre drops anotherpublished at 16:32 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +3, Fleetwood +5 (10*)

Chris Gotterup is going along nicely in these tough conditions with two birdies and seven pars, but he fails to control the spin on his ball at the first after a cracking drive.

He's left with 30 feet but he nudges his ball up to the hole and takes his par.

Bob MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood find the green but are both in three-putt country around 80-90 feet from the pin.

Fleetwood manages to get down in two but MacIntyre does not and that's a fifth bogey for the Scot today. They're both on cut watch.

  10. Smalley strikes the front!published at 16:29 BST 15 May

    Smalley -4 (7*)

    Alex SmalleyImage source, Getty Images

Alex Smalley has been quietly going about his business making pars all the way, until the par-five 16th when he drilled a second shot 258 yards down to just 16 feet away for eagle.

He doesn't make the big one but it's a simple birdie as he strikes out in front to take the solo lead at the US PGA Championship.

  11. Postpublished at 16:28 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas -1 (9*)

Fine effort from 32 feet from Justin Thomas as he cosies it up to spitting distance of the 18th hole (his ninth). That'll be a par to make the turn at one under.

Cameron Young also tidies up for par and is one over for the tournament.

The front nine is playing one-and-a-half shots easier today so perhaps an opportunity to make ground on the way home.

  12. Scheffler stunnerpublished at 16:26 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick +2, Rose +4 (8*)

From absolutely nowhere after what's been, in all honesty, a stinker of a performance, Scottie Scheffler produces a wonder shot on the long par-three 17th.

He absolutely drilled a long iron that pierced the breeze, cleared the water by fractions and raced up the speedy green to inside two feet - by miles the closest we've seen on this tough hole.

Matthew Fitzpatrick hits a wonderful shot himself, a similar effort that settles six feet away, but it's left looking ordinary compared to Scheffler's strike. Birdies for both men.

  13. Matsuyama joins leaderspublished at 16:23 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -3 (14*)

Hats off to Hideki Matsuyama as he joins the group at three under with his third birdie of an immaculate day at the fifth (his 14th hole).

He has four holes left to post a score and then sit back to watch the rest of the field toil to keep pace with him.

  14. Three-putt bogeypublished at 16:22 BST 15 May

    Lowry +2, Hovland +7, Morikawa +1 (10*)

Shane Lowry has an eight footer for birdie on the first but just can't make it drop, as he still awaits his first birdie of what's been a difficult round so far.

Collin Morikawa finds the green in two but he's miles away, around 70 feet, and makes a disappointing three-putt bogey.

  15. Another parpublished at 16:18 BST 15 May

    Reed -2 (11)

Bit of a miss with a wedge on 11 from Patrick Reed who could only hit it to 35 feet when left just 81 yards after a stunning drive.

He almost holed it though, leaving it just inches away for another stress-free par.

  16. Welcome birdie for Rosepublished at 16:16 BST 15 May

    Scheffler E, Fitzpatrick +3, Rose +4 (7*)

    Justin RoseImage source, Getty Images

Scottie Scheffler gets a free drop after his wild tee shot on 16 as he's blocked out by some hospitality tents or other infrastructure he's so far wide of the hole.

    The result is a par.

Justin Rose makes his second birdie of the day here though to keep him in the contest. He's made just one par so far in seven holes today, with two bogeys and two double bogeys in what's been a bit of a stinker.

They seem to find it easier to knock in the 20ft putts than the 5-10ft ones. It happened a lot yesterday and seems to be continuing. Are there any stats for this on different courses?

    Chris, Chatham

Oodles of stats out there Chris, but I can't delve too deeply at the moment.

What I can tell you is that looking through PGA Tour putting stats for this season - and doing some scrawled calculations - the top 20 players for making five to 10-feet putts on average convert 65.8% of the time

For 20 to 25 feet, the top 20 convert on average 21.5% of attempts.

There are so many of the shorter ones that we never get to see.

  18. MacIntyre makes turn at two over parpublished at 16:13 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +2, Fleetwood +4 (9*)

    Bob MacIntyreImage source, Getty Images

That'll do for Bob MacIntyre as he rounds off this bruising first half of round two with a two-putt par from distance.

He makes the turn at two over par.

That's a couple behind Chris Gotterup, whose tidy touch around the green helps him card a par of his own.

Poor old Tommy Fleetwood makes another bogey though and needs some form on the way home to make the weekend.

  19. Pars for Young & Thomaspublished at 16:09 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas -1 (8*)

Solid as a rock from Cameron Young as he maintains his momentum by burying a par putt from nine feet at the 17th (his eighth). He'll stay at one over.

Two shots better off, Justin Thomas gets himself out of trouble with a delicious chip out of the rough and pockets a par of his own.

  20. Positive sign for Shanepublished at 16:07 BST 15 May

    Lowry +2, Hovland +6, Morikawa E (9*)

Shane Lowry at least ends his first nine in some style with a typical short game clinic, almost holing out from the greenside rough at the 18th.

He could've done with a birdie there but at it's something to cling to heading into what is the front nine, a slightly easier nine statistically than the back.

And Lowry needs it after going four over for his first nine holes today.
