  1. Could birdie finish save Lowry?published at 18:29 BST 15 May

    Lowry +4, Hovland +6, Morikawa +1 (F)

Shane Lowry finally makes his very first birdie of the day on his final hole - and one that he'll hope will book his place for the weekend at the US PGA Championship.

Right now it's not, as the cut line is currently at three over so he's one shot outside the mark, but with plenty of players out on the course Lowry will hope that cut moves in his direction as the day goes on.

  2. Bad bogey for Schefflerpublished at 18:23 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick E, Rose +3 (15*)

The par-four sixth is only 390 yards today so after a nice drive Scottie Scheffler only has 92 yards to the flag. Somehow, he manages to miss the green short, then miss a five footer for par to make a hugely disappointing bogey from the spot he was in.

  3. Reed on the rockspublished at 18:18 BST 15 May

    Reed E (16)

Back-to-back bogeys for Patrick Reed as even he starts to find Aronimink too hot to handle coming down the stretch.

It's such a mental battle out there that he's not the only one finding it tough to get through the full 18 holes unscathed.

  4. Pars for Thomas & Youngpublished at 18:17 BST 15 May

    Young E, Bradley +6, Thomas -2 (16*)

That looked good all the way for Cameron Young but his birdie putt turns at the last minute and stays up. He puts a palm to his face in mock annoyance - not a player given to much expression usually.

Justin Thomas also has a birdie shout from 16 feet but leaves it a touch short. He'll stay at two under.

  5. Gotterup going great gunspublished at 18:17 BST 15 May

    Gotterup -2, MacIntyre +5, Fleetwood +6 (17*)

My word, Chris Gotterup is scaring the flagsticks out there.

Coming off a birdie, he sends another heat-seeker into the par-three eighth and rolls in a four-footer to move four under for the day and just two shots off the lead.

With only the par-five ninth to come, the world number 10 is suddenly eyeing up a tournament-low 65!

Gotterup is taking all the birdies away from his playing partners. Robert MacIntyre has just taken another bogey and slips back to five over, while Tommy Fleetwood has one last chance to make a birdie today.

  6. Potgieter tops leaderboardpublished at 18:09 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -4 (3)

    Aldrich Potgieter hits the front.

The South African does wonderfully well to not only find the green but get within five feet on the third after finding the left rough off the tee.

He then rolls in for birdie on a hole that is playing just under par to head to the top of the leaderboard.

Just checked for score updates after work. I thought this was the PGA championship not the US Open? So much for wide open fairways etc! Sounds brutal.

    Dan, Northumberland

My word this course will be brutal on Sunday. With the drop in wind and high temperatures, the ball will roll into the rough and the greens will be like glass.

  8. Smalley strikes backpublished at 18:08 BST 15 May

    Smalley -3 (13*)

Well played Alex Smalley - three bogeys in a row but he shows his mettle by hitting back right away with a birdie, thanks to a brilliant effort from 175 yards out of the right rough to just nine feet.

The putt is a slow one down the hill that's running out of legs but just dies into the front left of the cup for a three.

  9. Higgo makes solid start after arriving earlypublished at 18:05 BST 15 May

    Higgo -1 (1*)

One broadcaster had a countdown clock for Garrick Higgo's second round tee time, while another was following him around the car park a little earlier to check he was going to be punctual today.

On Thursday, the South African was handed a rare two-shot penalty at the start of his first round - for arriving a minute late to the tee.

However, having almost tried to abdicate responsibility for his own time keeping, he was around seven minutes early today and is under way with no real issues down the 10th, with a booming drive down the fairway.

He ends up taking a four, as he starts with a par on a hole he bogeyed 24 hours ago.

  10. Gotterup moves closerpublished at 18:05 BST 15 May

    Gotterup -1, MacIntyre +4, Fleetwood +6 (16*)

A beauty from Chris Gotterup! After a 324-yard drive down the seventh, he peppers the pin with a wedge from 102 yards and duly taps in from two feet. Three under for the round and into the red for the tournament.

Pars for Bob MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood but that's not what they need right now.

  11. Thomas makes movepublished at 18:01 BST 15 May

    Young E, Bradley +6, Thomas -2 (15*)

It appears that the talking-to from the officials has got Justin Thomas going.

Hitting from the sand at the sixth (his 15th), he's left himself two-and-a-half feet for birdie. Never in doubt. He's one off the lead!

  12. Bogey for Reedpublished at 18:00 BST 15 May

    Reed -1 (15)

A second bogey of the day for Patrick Reed comes at the 15th after missing the green to the left and getting a bit of a jumper out of the rough leaving him with too much to do to save par.

Reed's played beautifully all day but it just shows you that one mistake can cost you around here today.

  13. Postpublished at 17:55 BST 15 May

    Potgieter -3 (2)

    Aldrich PotgieterImage source, Getty Images

Aldrich Potgieter gets under way with a solid par and now sets up a birdie opportunity on the second with a lovely little wedge into five feet.

On Thursday he became the second youngest player in US PGA Championship history to at least a share of the lead at the end of round one after Sergio Garcia.

But he passes up on the chance to take the outright lead, with his putt staying high and skirting the cup.

  14. Birdie for Scottiepublished at 17:54 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -2, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +3 (13*)

That's a bit more like it from Scottie Scheffler, a drive onto the fairway and then an approach shot stuck to five feet results in his second birdie of the day as he works his way back to two under.

And the funny thing is, if he can finish off his round in level par after all the problems he's had it'll end up being a good day's work.

Justin Rose also picks up a birdie as he battles to make the cut.

  15. More misery for Fleetwoodpublished at 17:52 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +4, Fleetwood +6 (15*)

Tommy Fleetwood hasn't had much to shout about today and he's now going to need something fairly spectacular over the next three holes to make the weekend.

He's just bogeyed the par-four sixth after finding sand off the tee. He's had a double bogey, two bogeys and no birdies today.

  16. Unwanted hat-trick for Smalleypublished at 17:51 BST 15 May

    Smalley -2 (12*)

Three bogeys in a row for Alex Smalley means he's in crisis management now as his US PGA Championship dream is threatening to turn into a nightmare.

You couldn't see this coming on the front nine as Smalley was calmness personified, but he's coming undone at Aronimink now and badly needs to stop the bleeding on the next hole.

  17. Bogey for Lowrypublished at 17:49 BST 15 May

    Lowry +4, Hovland +8, Morikawa +2 (16*)

It's another bogey for Shane Lowry on the seventh hole, his 16th of the day, and he now badly needs to find his first birdie of the day as he's in danger of missing the cut here now after a really disappointing day.

Lowry started the day two under remember, just a shot off the lead, but he's six over for the day so far.

  19. Young up to level parpublished at 17:48 BST 15 May

    Young E, Bradley +5, Thomas -2 (14*)

    Cameron YoungImage source, Getty Images

Time for Cameron Young to make a move? Well, he's just hammered home a 28-foot birdie putt to get himself to level par with four holes left of round two.

There's also some wonderful creativity from Justin Thomas at the fifth (his 14th) to drift a chip past the hole then spin it back beautifully to two feet.

It's only to save par, but a sign his short game is clicking into gear.

  20. Scheffler short with a wedgepublished at 17:43 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +4 (12*)

Scottie Scheffler is normally the best in the business with the short irons but he undercooks his wedge in from 112 yards and it falls short and spins off the front of the green on the third.

He gets down in two for a par but the world number one will want to do better than that moving forward - in fact he'll have to do better than that if he wants to challenge come Sunday.
