It’s carnage out there, especially on the greens.

  2. Higgo on late penaltypublished at 14:59 BST 15 May

    Higgo (17:43 BST)

Garrick Higgo looked to clear up his two-shot penalty for being late to the tee: "I was there on time, but the rule is, if you're one second late, you're late. So if you think about it, I was there on time, if you know what I mean."

Actually, no, he's not cleared that up at all has he? Watch the video and see what you think.

Good news though, Higgo is on the property ahead of his afternoon tee time...

  3. Major champions lining uppublished at 14:57 BST 15 May

US PGA ChampionshipImage source, Getty Images

Major experience can be key to these big four tournaments, and so it's proven at the US PGA Championship, where 12 former major champions were within two shots of the lead after round one.

That beats the old record for any round of a major of 11 set at the 1999 Masters, so maybe previous experience is becoming key in the fight for the Wanamaker Trophy?

These are the former champions, seven of which have won this event before, who were lurking after 18 holes:

Martin Kaymer, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, Shane Lowry, Jason Day, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa.

  4. MacIntyre finds birdie at 14published at 14:57 BST 15 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +1, Fleetwood +4 (5*)

    Bob MacIntyreImage source, Getty Images

    There we go, Bob!

MacIntyre has just become the first to make a birdie today at the par-three 14th - there were only six of them yesterday - and that 10-foot putt has to feel good.

Less happy for Tommy Fleetwood though who fails to save a bogey from five feet and cards a costly double.

  5. Welcome birdie for Thomaspublished at 14:54 BST 15 May

    Young +2, Bradley +4, Thomas E (4*)

Just a slight wave and a touch of the cap from Justin Thomas but that birdie at the fourth reverses a bit of a negative direction for the American.

Fine putt too, from just off the fringe and into the centre from 12 feet.

Playing partner Cameron Young is going the opposite direction though. A duffed chip costs him a shot.

  6. Bogeys at 14published at 14:52 BST 15 May

    Lowry E, Hovland +5, Morikawa +1 (5*)

The long par-three 14th does for both Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry as they both make their second bogeys of the day.

Lowry is well off tyarget with his tee shot as he pulls it into the left bunker, but Morikawa is unlucky when he's just short of the green but sees the ball stick in the rough above the sand trap.

He's left with a tough shot off a big slope rather than a much easier escape from the sand as another shot goes.

  7. First bogey for Reedpublished at 14:48 BST 15 May

    Reed -2 (6)

On his 24th hole of the tournament Patrick Reed finally makes his first mistake as he misses a four-footer for par on the sixth.

He was wide off the tee but played a lovely recovery, getting unlucky a bit when the ball ended up against the collar of the fringe on the green, but his putt deserved a par as he left just over four feet.

A first dropped shot goes though for Reed.

  8. Postpublished at 14:48 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -1 (7*), Li -1 (7)

There have been a few other movers into the red this morning, defying the pattern around this damp and blustery course.

The 2020 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama is one under through seven and China's Li Haotong two under through six to both sit at -1 for the tournament.

Seeing these players' efforts to just make par is much more interesting than birdiefests. Scottie looks very human.

  10. Scheffler struggling but Rose makes birdiepublished at 14:44 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +1 (3*)

Scottie Scheffler usually makes a slow start on Thursdays, but he's struggling on this Friday after another bogey on the 12th drops him further back.

He looked in prime position last night but he's just heading backwards so far today.

Justin Rose shows the world number one how it's done with a fine birdie though to get a shot back after his double-bogey start, while Matt Fitzpatrick splits the difference with a par.

  11. MacIntyre slips backpublished at 14:44 BST 15 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +2, Fleetwood +2 (5*)

Another shot goes for Bob MacIntyre, this time at the 13th after finding the rough from the tee and then knocking his second shot into a greenside bunker.

Far from ideal for the Scot.

Tommy Fleetwood continues to plot his way around carefully, carding his fifth straight par.

  12. Captain Donald looking goodpublished at 14:39 BST 15 May

    Donald -1 (8*)

    Luke DonaldImage source, Getty Images

Luke Donald has made two birdie and no bogeys so far today after eight holes, with the European Ryder Cup captain showing his team-mates how it's done!

Wonder if it's those epic sunglasses that are helping the skipper...

  13. Solid start for Smalleypublished at 14:37 BST 15 May

    Smalley -3 (2*)

Alex Smalley is still grinding away with a share of the lead, knocking out two pars on 10 and 11 for a nice calm start to the day.

There's a lot of unheralded PGA Tour players in the mix near the top of the leaderboard and it'll be abig test of nerve to see how they get on today.

  14. Good par savepublished at 14:35 BST 15 May

    Reed -3 (5)

Good par save on five from Patrick Reed, he knows full well he's got a clean card for the entire tournament and he does not want to let that run end.

He's a bit wild off the sixth tee though...

  15. Bogey for Morikawapublished at 14:34 BST 15 May

    Lowry -1, Hovland +5, Morikawa E (4*)

It's only a short par-four the 13th, but you still need to find the fairway off the tee, as Collin Morikawa found out when making a bogey following a visit to the rough from his drive.

Shane Lowry did find the fairway and would have wanted to stick it closer than 20 feet when just 99 yards away, but that's all he could manage and he failed to get that birdie chance to drop.

  16. Another shot goes for Thomaspublished at 14:31 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas +1 (3*)

Deathly silence around the 12th green as Justin Thomas slides a seven-foot par putt past the cup for his second straight bogey.

He's suddenly four shots back from the lead.

Cameron Young and Keegan Bradley are safely in for par.

  17. Three parspublished at 14:29 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -2, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +2 (2*)

After the horror show that was the 10th, all three play the 11th a lot better as they all make par with all three having birdie chances.

Scottie Scheffler only has that after a remarkable recovery from the right bunker as he's off target with his drive again - he missed left with his first and now right with h is second.

  18. Early birdie for Blanchetpublished at 14:26 BST 15 May

    Blanchet -2 (1*)

Chandler Blanchet is an unfamiliar name near the top of the leaderboard after an early birdie.

The 30-year-old American is playing in his first US PGA Championship having bagged a PGA Tour card for the first time this year when finishing second on the Korn Ferry Tour.

And he's making the most of his tournament debut so far.

  19. Pars apiece for Fleetwood Mac grouppublished at 14:21 BST 15 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre +1, Fleetwood +2 (3*)

    Tommy FleetwoodImage source, Getty Images

Three straight pars to start for Tommy Fleetwood as he turns off the 12th green. He's currently bang on that +2 line.

Partners Chris Gotterup and Bob MacIntyre also collect fours and move onto the reachable par-four 13th.

  20. Where will the cut line be?published at 14:18 BST 15 May

The PGA of America's guidelines say the 156-strong will be cut to the top 70 and ties at the end of today.

As things stand, that would be 85 players at +2 or better.

Long way to go yet but we'll keep an eye on it for you.
