  1. 'This classic course is standing up to the best'published at 17:43 BST 15 May

    Donald +4 (73)

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald, speaking to Sky Sports after a second-round 73:

"It's tricky, the wind was blowing pretty hard and there were crosswinds. The fairways have width on them but slope too so it's not easy to keep it on them and then you have to find the right spot on the green.

"I think it's playing tougher than what a lot of people thought during the practice rounds.

"I played nicely today. I'm utterly disappointed with that six on eight coming in but I made a couple of errors and it's a shame."

    On the challenge of Aronimink:

"I'm sure the PGA are licking the chops with the weather they've got. It's cool, windy, difficult. This good old classic golf course is standing up to the very best and it's a good example that you don't need a ton of length or narrow fairways.

"With interesting greens, you can challenge the best."

  2. Matsuyama closes in leadpublished at 17:41 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -3 (67)

We have a clubhouse leader - and he's on the same score as those who were in front after round one.

Great day for Hideki Matsuyama although he will be slightly peeved that a birdie putt at the last scooted by.

He can have a rest now and watch everyone else battling through the conditions.

  3. Back-to-back bogeys for Smalleypublished at 17:38 BST 15 May

    Smalley -3 (11*)

Alex Smalley has seen his two-shot tournament lead evaporate in the space of a couple of holes as he adds a bogey on the second thanks to going into the fairway bunker.

He still has 12 feet to save his par but he can't find the cup and he's now back into a share of the lead.

  4. Birdie for Thomaspublished at 17:36 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas -1 (13*)

Justin Thomas grins at Cameron YoungImage source, Getty Images

When Keegan Bradley's group get to the green, Cam Young lines up a birdie putt but drags it left and settles for par.

Before that chat with the official, Thomas had played a tremendous approach to six feet and cashes in with a birdie.

    Back into the red.

  5. Donald finishes six-five for 73published at 17:35 BST 15 May

    Donald +4 (73)

After that ruinous triple-bogey six on the eighth, Luke Donald is unable to birdie the par-five ninth and cards a second-round 73 to go with yesterday's 71.

He'll be despondent after that finish but he may well be sticking around for the weekend - and that may not be the case for some of his Ryder Cup stars!

  6. Postpublished at 17:32 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +4, Fleetwood +5 (14*)

Three pars on the par-three fifth.

Chris Gotterup's in fine shape but the next hour is going to be huge for Bob MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood.

  7. Postpublished at 17:31 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas E (12*)

Just seen Justin Thomas and Keegan Bradley having an animated conversation with a buggy-riding PGA official.

He looks like he's telling them to speed up their play.

They have been out for four hours - conditions/nature of course notwithstanding - so it is taking a while.

  8. Postpublished at 17:24 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +4, Fleetwood +5 (13*)

Oooh, that could be big for Bob.

After that double on the last, MacIntyre drains an eight-footer for par at the fourth to stay at four over.

Chris Gotterup's in for par but there's still no joy for Tommy Fleetwood. He misses a 12-footer and remains without a birdie today. The putter's been stone cold this week.

  9. Bogey for Smalleypublished at 17:23 BST 15 May

    Smalley -4 (10*)

After a flawless front nine, Alex Smalley may have just relaxed a bit and let his concentration dip as he started his back nine with a bogey courtesy of a missed par putt from eight feet.

It was a bit scrappy off the tee as well though so he just needs to settle a bit as he still leads the US PGA Championship.

  10. Fitzpatrick's birdie run endspublished at 17:21 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -1, Fitzpatrick +1, Rose +4 (11*)

Talk about a momentum stuffer. Matt Fitzpatrick reeled off three birdies in a row to come powering back into the tournament, but then a bad miss on approach sees him stuffed into the bunker short of the second green, before missing his par putt from 10 feet to make another bogey.

It's not just about trying to pick up shots at Aronimink today, it's about limiting the mistakes and that's something none of this featured group have done particularly well.

  11. Thomas and Young again in for parpublished at 17:20 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +5, Thomas E (13*)

A sag of the knees from Justin Thomas as he fails to back up his stunning second shot with a suitable putt at the fourth (his 13th) to snag a birdie.

Meanwhile, another measured putt from Cameron Young at the fourth (his 13th) for his fifth straight par keeps him at one over for the tournament.

  12. Lowry still strugglingpublished at 17:17 BST 15 May

    Lowry +3, Hovland +8, Morikawa +2 (14*)

    Shane LowryImage source, Getty Images

Shane Lowry has slipped back to three over after a bogey on the fourth - a really bad one as well as it comes via a three-putt from just 15 feet away!

Lowry was bang in contention at the start of the day but he's not made a single birdie yet and is five over for his round so far.

  13. Disaster for Donaldpublished at 17:16 BST 15 May

    Donald +4 (17*)

An update on European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald - but it's not good news.

The former world number one was plodding his way around nicely today, level for his round through 16 holes having teed off the 10th.

However, he missed the green at the par-three eighth and four-putted from 25 feet. A triple bogey six and he's suddenly starting to sweat about making the cut.

  14. Matsuyama makes parpublished at 17:15 BST 15 May

    Matsuyama -3 (17*)

Up at the eighth (his penultimate hole), Hideki Matsuyama is putting for a birdie from about 15 feet.

He thinks it'll cut back but it stays straight and doesn't drop.

    Remains at three under par.

  15. Where will the cut line be?published at 17:13 BST 15 May

The PGA of America's guidelines say the 156-strong field will be cut to the top 70 and ties at the end of today.

As things stand, that would be 74 players at +2 or better.

The second half of the field heading out shortly so let's see how that changes.

I don’t know if these greens bring Rory and Bryson back into it, or completely rule them out. Both need something in the 60s…

  17. Double trouble for Bobpublished at 17:10 BST 15 May

    Gotterup E, MacIntyre +4, Fleetwood +5 (12*)

One step forward, two steps back for Bob MacIntyre today. He's now gone bogey-birdie-double bogey after a bit of a disaster at the par-four fourth.

He found the rough off the tee and sand with his second. Out of the trap, he left himself a 40-footer for par and took three putts from there, missing a four-footer for bogey.

    That's gotta really sting.

After three-putting from nowhere for his first bogey of the round at the third, Chris Gotterup bashed his drive 334 yards up the fairway, hit his second to 20 feet and rolled in the putt for a bounce-back birdie.

    Impressive.

  19. Sand savepublished at 17:05 BST 15 May

    Reed -2 (13)

That's a wonderful escape from the trap by the side of the 13th green by Patrick Reed, who is only two feet short of holing it out for a birdie.

But a par, as we've said all day, is a good score on almost every hole out there at the moment.

  20. Smalley stretches his leadpublished at 16:58 BST 15 May

    Smalley -5 (9*)

What a brilliant nine holes of golf this has been from Alex Smalley - flawless with no dropped shots and a second birdie of the day dropping on the 18th thanks to a 15-foot putt.

The set-up came from a sparkling approach shot from just under 200 yards out, and means that the American now leads by two.
