Not a great five minutes for the Fitzpatricks right there.

  2. Bogey hat-trick for Fitzpatrickpublished at 21:30 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (3)

Matt Fitzpatrick is a big football fan but that's an unwanted hat-trick as he starts his round with three straight bogeys.

The third hole is a 512-yard par four so it's a tough one - even tougher from the rough though as Fitzpatrick finds out with another errant tee shot, followed by a heave out of the fescue that can only find the bunker and it's another dropped shot.

Wyndham Clark was off target off the tee as well but he played a better second just short of the green and his short game got him out of trouble with a par.

    A Fitzpatrick +1 (11)

Alex Fitzpatrick gives that birdie on the 10th straight back.

He gets on the dancefloor no problem but then takes three with his flatstick from under 20 feet, with his third wriggling away from the cup from three feet.

  4. Eagle for Thomaspublished at 21:26 BST 20 June

Just when I'd written off writing about Justin Thomas - starting with three straight bogeys will do that - he's knocked in an eagle from 20 feet at the fifth.

Classic. He's back to level par.

  5. Birdie chances go for Morikawa & Kimpublished at 21:25 BST 20 June

    Morikawa -1, T Kim -1 (4)

Collin Morikawa breaks into a smile as he wafts an outstanding long bunker shot to within six feet of the fourth hole.

That sets up an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the dropped shot at the last - but then he misses it.

Tom Kim has a chance for a birdie to reverse his direction but he's tugged it slightly left.

  6. Big par savepublished at 21:21 BST 20 June

    McIlroy -2, McNealy E (9)

Rory McIlroy's in the fescue at nine.

Whack! He does well to muscle his ball to the back of the green and chips back down the slope to seven feet.

A slippery one for par. Makes it!

McIlroy turns in 33. He's tied third.

Bogey for Maverick McNealy, though, and he drops back to level having reached two under at the fifth.

  7. Scheffler two over after ninepublished at 21:20 BST 20 June

    Scheffler +2 (9)

Scottie Scheffler hits the turn in 37, that's two over for his front nine and two over for the tournament.

No birdies today so far and not too much to shout about for the world number one, who is statistically at least doing well with his iron play, ranking ninth on approach, but there's nothing that jumps out at you as typical Scheffler brilliance.

  8. Stevens and Schauffele slip backpublished at 21:18 BST 20 June

    Stevens -3, Schauffele -2 (3)

A couple of hack-outs on the third after poor drives from Sam Stevens and Xander Schauffele.

Stevens knocks his third to 15 feet but is tentative with his putt so he drops back to three under.

Schauffele was able to advance his ball as far as the greenside bunker, but he catches too much ball and flies it 30 feet past.

His par putt never threatens and one goes for the two-time major winner, too.

  9. Burns moves into top fivepublished at 21:16 BST 20 June

    Burns -2 (5)

Plenty of people sliding down the leaderboard, but Sam Burns is one moving in the right direction.

He has just played the easiest hole on property with the fifth but has cashed in with a timely birdie to move to -2. In touch.

  10. Postpublished at 21:15 BST 20 June

    A Fitzpatrick E (10)

Alex Fitzpatrick likes that and who wouldn't? The younger brother of the 2022, US Open champion Matt, leaves himself a gentle wedge into the green on the 10th and zips it in to around six feet on his way to a third birdie of the round.

He's just a stroke behind his big brother now.

  12. Morikawa and Kim both bogey thirdpublished at 21:11 BST 20 June

The par-four third is playing as the hardest on the course today and it's just had its way with Collin Morikawa and Tom Kim.

Both have coughed up a shot, Kim missing another shortish par putt to add to the one he did on the previous hole.

Back to -1 for this duo.

We've mentioned today about Wyndham Clark's poor behaviour at the US Open last year.

Meanwhile, Joaquin Niemann became the first player handed a two-shot penalty for throwing his club after a poor shot on day one.

On the radio, they've just been discussing how golf's governing bodies are attempting to clamp down on such antics moving forward, including swearing and outbursts on the course.

So what do you reckon about golf's code of conduct? How would you ensure better behaviour from the pros?

  14. Another bogey for Fitzpatrickpublished at 21:09 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick -1 (2)

Matt Fitzpatrick short of the green again on two - to be fair this hole has been a challenge today as the fourth hardest on the course even though it's playing much shorter than the first two days.

It's his trademark cross handed chipping style in focus again, he connects nicely but it's just a bit short and leaves 10 feet. That proves too much work though so it's a bogey-bogey start.

Wyndham Clark finds the green and gets down in two from 40 feet for a par.

  15. Postpublished at 21:05 BST 20 June

    McIlroy -2, McNealy -1 (8)

Rory McIlroy turns away in disgust after tugging his wedge from 130 yards to the left at the eighth.

But it's another great judgement of speed with a lengthy putt and he taps in for par, snapping his three-birdie run.

His distance putting has been a joy to behold so far today.

  17. 'Opens up tournament'published at 21:01 BST 20 June

    Clark -6 (1)

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

The longer the day goes on, the grass grows at different rates on the greens and so they become less and less certain.

A three-putt bogey and that opens up the tournament.

All of a sudden, the wing mirrors are filled with really threatening names.

  18. Bogeys for leaderspublished at 21:00 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick -2 (1)

Erm, not exactly the best starts for the final pairing as both of them drop a shot on the opening hole - admittedly a tricky one today with the wind but still not great.

Both of them miss the green - Wyndham Clark just short and Matt Fitzpatrick in the bunker, both of them play their thirds to just inside 10 feet, and both of them miss!

That healthy lead Clark had overnight already looks a bit slender.

  19. Postpublished at 21:00 BST 20 June

    Stevens -4, Schauffele -3 (2)

Sam Stevens backs up that brilliant opening birdie with a rock-solid two-putt par at the lengthy par-three second.

Xander Schauffele matches his three, playing a first-class bunker shot to six feet before delicately nudging a downhill putt home.

    Solid stuff.

  20. Kim makes bogey at secondpublished at 20:54 BST 20 June

    Morikawa -2, T Kim -2 (2)

Tom Kim has slipped back at the second, finding the bunker off the tee then missing from six-and-a-half feet for par.

That'll drop him to fifth alongside playing partner Collin Morikawa, who has started par-par.
