  1. McIlroy lets another one gopublished at 22:02 BST 20 June

    McIlroy E (12)

Another misjudgement with a short iron from the fairway, this time on the 12th.

Rory McIlroy, not for the first time today, must rely on his lag putting to save par, but that's a weak effort from 50 feet.

He leaves it eight feet short and misses that one. Two bogeys in three holes. McIlroy has dropped five shots between the 10th and 12th over the past two days.

That early momentum has well and truly disappeared.

    Fleetwood E (17)

Having nearly holed out from a greenside bunker on the 16th for an eagle, Tommy Fleetwood goes close to back-to-back birdies on the 17th.

His putt from downtown looks on course for the cup but just doesn't quite have enough gas.

Can the Englishman, who was runner-up here in 2018, now finish with a flourish?

  3. An under-par winner?published at 21:56 BST 20 June

There are just six players still under par.

In the four most recent US Opens held at this venue, three players have ended up under par after 72 holes.

Hit the thumbs - are we getting a winner under par this week?

  4. Bogey for Kimpublished at 21:56 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim E (6)

Decent attempt from Collin Morikawa from 16 feet for birdie at the 16th but it's not dropped.

He stays at level par where he's joined by partner Tom Kim who pays the price for dumping his approach into the greenside bunker.

This group are five over par through a third of their round.

We’ve seen some weird and wonderful outfits on the players this week but tip of the cap to Keith from Utah for this ensemble.

Payne Stewart vibes fitting in beautifully at Shinnecock.

In a world that feels more and more confrontational, I’m pleased golf is trying to ensure people conduct themselves well. If you can’t control your emotions then you should be penalised. I’m not saying kick them out, but there should be consequences for poor behaviour; penalty strokes or fines.

  7. Eagle chancepublished at 21:53 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (4)

Wyndham Clark smacks a drive away 345 yards down onto the fifth fairway and than stripes a long iron pin high, with a lovely baby fade on the breeze from about 220 yards out leaving him with a very makeable eagle chance coming up...

  8. 'The real danger'published at 21:53 BST 20 June

    Schauffele -3 (5)

Xander Schauffele is the real danger on this leaderboard for me.

He makes so few mistakes. He's very judicious in terms of shot selection and course management.

Those are the attributes you really need at a US Open.

  9. Two birdiespublished at 21:50 BST 20 June

    Stevens -4, Schauffele -3 (5)

Ohhh, so close to an eagle for Xander Schauffele. After two great digs into the par-five fifth, his 20-footer is short by a couple of rolls, but it's an easy birdie and he improves to three under.

And Sam Stevens follows him in! Just short in two, his bump and run was a little strong but he sinks a left-to-righter to slot back into second place on his own, two shots off the lead.

Flags are still being stretched around Shinnecock but I don't think it's as strong as when we came on air.

They were rattling in the holes back then but not anymore, and I think that is playing into the hands of these leading groups.

  11. Finally a par!published at 21:45 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (4)

Wyndham Clark has an outside chance for birdie on the third but he can't quite convert from 25 feet away. A par is just fine for now though.

Matt Fitzpatrick finally gets a par on the card with a nicely played hole, finding a fairway and a green in regulation - amazing how much easier golf is from the short grass.

    McIlroy -1 (11)

Guarding against airmailing another green, Rory McIlroy comes up 50 feet short at the hugely difficult par-three 11th.

And yet again, his lag putting takes the pressure off. He rolls it up next to the hole and takes his three, which is no mean feat on this hole.

    That's very interesting, David.

Be funny if they launched their putter.

If any players throws their clubs then I believe they should not be allowed to use that club again until the next round. As for swearing, I understand it's frustrating, but they are setting a precedent for future young players and have to be responsible.

  15. Birdie for Raipublished at 21:42 BST 20 June

    Rai +2 (13)

A wonderful iron shot gives Aaron Rai a look at birdie from around eight feet.

Aside from on the fifth (where he made his only other birdie) the Englishman has hardly had anything from that range but he sinks this to pull a stroke back on the leaders.

  16. Morikawa bogeys fifthpublished at 21:42 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim -1 (5)

Frustration for Collin Morikawa at the fifth as, rather than birdie the easiest hole on the course, he's managed to drop a shot.

Finding the fairway bunker off the tee was the issue but then he overshot the green with his third and couldn't get up and down for par.

Not an ideal time to slip further away.

Rory McIlroy is having a conflab with his caddie Harry Diamond before the 11th. I thought the wind was dying down, but it definitely isn't.

This flag is almost on a bit of a steeple.

  18. Bad bogey for McIlroypublished at 21:36 BST 20 June

    McIlroy -1 (10)

    That is unbelievable.

After a belting drive down the par-four 10th, Rory McIlroy only has a flick on to the green, but just as he did yesterday, he's overcooked it badly and it goes scampering over the back.

His third isn't bad but it keeps rolling out to 22 feet and the subsequent par putt dies off to the right.

That's an incredibly sloppy bogey considering the drive.

    Stevens -3, Schauffele -2 (4)

    Xander SchauffeleImage source, Getty Images

Xander Schauffele's in prime position at four, but he catches his wedge fat and his ball rolls back off the front of the green.

From there, he putts up to six feet and rolls it in for a par.

Sam Stevens shows his more illustrious playing partner how it's done, knocking one in low to 12 feet.

Ah, he can't make it though.

Frustration is part of golf. If they don't destroy anything or hurt anyone, who cares if they throw a club or swear? It's good to see the emotions
