Scottie Scheffler misses the green on the par-five fifth hole and leaves a tough chip, so only has an outside chance at making birdie, which he can't hit so it's just a par there.

It's all just a bit underwhelming from the world number one right now - he's playing just average golf, which for him is a massive drop-off from his usual sky-high standards.

Right then, how's this course playing?

Hard.

Playing alongside JT is the perhaps unexpected figure of Harry Higgs – and he’s quite a character.

A topless shirt-twirler on the 16th green at Phoenix in 2022, Higgs revealed he forgot his trousers for Friday’s round, showing up to Shinnecock Hills in his shorts instead.

He was a late addition to this field, sealing his place because Bud Cauley won on the PGA Tour last weekend, and now he’s in the top 10 after 36 holes.

Not that this is totally unusual for him – after all he did finish fourth on his debut at a major in 2021 at the US PGA Championship.

Whatever happens, it should be entertaining.

It was all happening in the third round the last time the US Open was held at Shinnecock Hills, as it was a genuine moving day for Daniel Berger and Tony Finau.

Conditions got far worse as they day went on, with the two Americans starting the day in 45th but both shooting 66 to end the day in a share of the lead as Dustin Johnson could only manage a 77 playing in the toughest weather.

The conditions aren't exactly the same today but it could be more testing as the day goes on with ther USGA not watering the greens mid-round as they have done the last two day.

But as moving days go, last time here was quite something!

Fierce, passionate, line-crosser?

Leader Wyndham Clark recognises he alienated golf fans with his behaviour at the 2025 US Open, smashing up a locker at Oakmont. He's been asked about it a lot this week and not shirked the questions.

"I've had a lot of grief since last year, rightfully so. The thing that's unfortunate is that's not who I am," he said. "I'm hoping I can win back the fans that I had or some new fans because it was a terrible incident.

"I really feel like I can show people that I'm fun and outgoing, I'm fierce, competitive, love the game, respect the game, and I just had a bad moment."

The wind is currently blowing at 14mph, gusting to 22mph.

After a week at Shinnecock Hills, I reckon I should’ve brought my washing with me. It would’ve dried quicker than some of the players’ pre-shot routines.

The flags are flying and every ball is getting a little helping hand from the breeze.

Is this a mini charge from Justin Rose? The Englishman was toiling a few holes back when he made three consecutive bogeys.

However, a birdie on the fifth helped raise his spirits and he now goes straight at the flag on the par-three seventh and lands his ball within six feet to make a two.

It’s been a little unusual to see Justin Thomas at a US Open weekend, with the two-time major champion missing the cut at each of the past three editions.

His record hasn’t always been dodgy – he shot a 63 in the third round at Erin Hills in 2017 on his way to a share of ninth.

He also finished tied for eighth at Winged Foot in 2020.

A fine two-under 68 on Friday gets him onto our radar for this evening. JT’s eminently watchable, so I’m not complaining.

Rory McIlroy has reached the scoring part of the course, with holes four to nine offering birdie chances if you stay out of trouble.

But the world number two has not found a fairway yet today and is in the bunker here. From 96 yards, he clips a lovely shot pin high but can't bury the 20-footer.

Maverick McNealy has played some lovely golf already today and knocks in a nine-footer for birdie to move one under.

Alex Fitzpatrick raises his arms aloft after rolling in his first birdie of the day on the fifth. He needed to bounce back after bogeys on the first and fourth and it looked like he enjoyed that.

And it was all set up by the most delightful dink into six feet from just off the dance floor.

The third has been the hardest hole today and Rory McIlroy has made life difficult for himself by missing the fairway left.

Going long is big trouble here so, unsurprisingly, he errs on the side of caution but isn't quite so masterful with the long putt this time, coming up 12 feet short.

He misses that one for par on the right and slips back to one over.

Moments after that previous post singing his praises, his tee shot on the par-three 17th agonisingly trundled into a greenside bunker.

His splash out left him with a 30-footer for par. That raced three feet by. Bogey. Sorry.

Birdies are hard to come by today but Emiliano Grillo is bucking the trend a little.

The Argentinian has holed five so far, with just one bogey. His latest has come at the par-five 16th and if he can par his way in, one under par might not be too far off the lead in about five hours.

One to watch for at the end of the day, as recent trends suggest you need to be at least in touch with the leader after 54 holes to win the US Open.

In each of the last 27 US Opens the champion was either in the lead or no more than four shots behind at the end of the third round - with Lee Janzen the last to overturn a five-shot deficit in 1998

Right now, Wyndham Clark only has four players within four shots of him.

Scottie Scheffler is clearly struggling, and strangely it's with his iron play which is usually the best in the world by some margin.

But he's messing about with his grip and looks pretty uncomfortable before hitting into the bunker on the second hole, and then failing to get up and down this time costs him a second bogey already.

Not a great start to say the least.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre is in the clubhouse at seven over after shooting a 73 today.

The 29-year-old certainly got his steps in today looking at shot tracker. He was all over the place off the tee at times and every single one of his five bogeys followed some sort of error.

He found only eight out of 18 greens and sits in a tie for 55th at present - miles out of contention.
