  1. 'Want these opportunities'published at 00:21 BST

    Scheffler -1 (69)

Scottie Scheffler speaking to Sky Sports about whether the career Grand Slam chance on Sunday increases the pressure: "Any time you are trying to win a major championship, it is as intense situation. It is why we practice as hard as we do - we want these opportunities.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of trying to go out on a difficult course to win a golf tournament.

"But I'm five shots back at the moment, so we will see how the rest of the day shakes out."

  2. Theegala picks up birdie at 18published at 00:15 BST

Fine finish for Sahith Theegala who we've not really mentioned today but has been plotting his way around Shinnecock today with no little skill.

His birdie at the last cancels out the solitary bogey on his card to get him under par for the tournament and into a share of second.

One shot back is partner Sam Burns, who can't sink a 28-footer for birdie and closes at level par.

  3. Schauffele fighting backpublished at 00:14 BST

    Stevens -1, Schauffele E (15)

Sam Stevens takes a wild swipe out of the fescue at 15 and does well to find the front of the green, some 60 feet away from the hole.

He nudges it up to five feet and rolls it in to remain under par.

But here comes Xander! He picks up his second birdie in three holes and claws his way back to level par.

Not prepared to give up the fight just yet.

    Clark -6 (14)

Apart from a loose tee shot at the 13th where he tried to knock it on the green, Wyndham Clark has been so impressive.

That lead is starting to look insurmountable.

  5. Birdie gives Clark huge leadpublished at 00:11 BST

    Clark -7, M. Fitzpatrick E (14)

After battling for his life to save par over and over again, Wyndham Clark finally plays a full hole brilliantly well and it results in a birdie that puts him back on seven under where he started the day.

The difference though is that instead of a four-shot lead he's now six shots in front - only three players have ever had a bigger lead after 54 holes in US Open history.

Some golfing from Clark so far.

  6. Kim bogeys 15thpublished at 00:06 BST

    Morikawa +1, T Kim E (15)

Yep, called it with Tom Kim as he walks off the 15th green with a second straight bogey.

Having got himself up to being Wyndham Clark's closest challenger, those two dropped shots have seriously curbed his momentum.

Only three players now under par for the tournament.

There will be so many players watching on and hoping Wyndham Clark can give them something to hope on for tomorrow.

If he stays at six under, or gets to seven under par, they'll be thinking they've got no chance.

  8. Stunnerpublished at 00:02 BST

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (13)

A towering high eight iron from Wyndham Clark takes a nice bounce on the green then curls down, pin high, to what looks like a huge birdie chance.

    Brilliant shot from the leader.

  9. Postpublished at 23:59 BST

    Morikawa +1, T Kim -1 (14)

Is this where Tom Kim's challenge unravels a touch?

He is in the juiciest of grass down the right of 15 and nudges his second shot out but into a greenside bunker.

If he can get away with par here it'll be a result.

  10. Stevens saves his skinpublished at 23:58 BST

    Stevens -1, Schauffele +1 (14)

Sam Stevens was in trouble off the tee at 14. But after chopping back on to the fairway, he clips a lovely third deep into the green and gets it to check up seven feet past the cup.

And he makes the putt! Big, big par save and he stays under par for the championship.

Xander Schauffele has steadied the ship since those two doubles and makes par here to remain seven back.

    Clark -6 (13)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

That was some gutsy four there.

It had five written all over it from the moment his ball left his driver head and went into the hay.

    Fantastic stuff from Wyndham Clark.

  12. Clark's magic putter to the rescuepublished at 23:53 BST

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (13)

It's almost laughable now as Wyndham Clark rolls in a curling 14 footer to save his par yet again - after an ordinary bunker shot that had him chuntering again about the state of the sand traps.

Clark has been scrappy in the long game but rescued time and time again by the putter - and although he's one over for this round and not playing particularly well tee to green, he's actually increased his overnight lead as the rest of the field has slipped back.

  13. Burns misses birdie chancepublished at 23:52 BST

    Burns E (16)

Is that a club throw from Sam Burns??

Absolutely not, but he does twirl it dramatically as his birdie effort from 15 feet swirls towards the hole but refuses to drop.

    He'll stay at level par.

  14. Bogeys for Morikawa & Kimpublished at 23:49 BST

    Morikawa +1, T Kim -1 (14)

Out of the greenside bunker comes Tom Kim at the 14th and he's done very well to get it within nine feet of the hole.

Can he save par? No, inches away.

A dropped shot for Collin Morikawa nudges him the wrong side of par.

  15. Clark in the fescuepublished at 23:48 BST

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (12)

"I can get to the ball," is never great to hear when weighing up a shot in the US Open - but Wyndham Clark has hit a big miss again off the tee and is in some deep fescue short of the 13th green.

He digs it out but can only find the front bunker - but since it's a short par four he can still save par with yet another up and down here.

  16. Schauffele bounces backpublished at 23:41 BST

    Stevens -1, Schauffele +1 (13)

That's how to respond to a ruinous little stretch of holes.

Just shy of the green at the short par-four 13th, he knocks a beautiful little pitch stone dead and mops up for a much-needed birdie after dropping four shots in the first three holes of the back nine.

Sam Stevens laid back off the tee, went long with his second but got out of jail with a bit of short-game wizardry and stops the rot of three successive bogeys with a par.

  18. Clark still scramblingpublished at 23:39 BST

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick E (12)

Wyndham Clark misses another green - he's only hit six of 12 so far today, but it doesn't really mater with his short game, as he plays another brilliant chip and leaves just a tap-in for par.

  19. Scheffler just about in touchpublished at 23:37 BST

    Scheffler -1 (69)

    Scottie SchefflerImage source, Getty Images

It was a funny old round for Scottie Scheffler, as there was no sign of that back-nine blitz after a scrappy first nine holes. His first birdie of the day came on the 10th but he was still quiet until that chip-in on the 14th sparked him into life.

Three birdies in a row followed and he should have actually signed for a 67 today as two bad putts on 17 and 18 cost him two shots, but still, what a round.

And I'm no golf coach but it's pretty clear to see where he needs to improve tomorrow as he was back to his best late on with his iron play. But on the greens...

    Scheffler round three strokes gained:

    Approach: +2.98 (1st)

    Putting: -0.22 (43rd)

Scottie Scheffler would love to be in the final group. He has the reputation. The pros know how good he is and that's the awe factor

I think Wyndham Clark would be much happier playing with Sam Stevens than Scheffler tomorrow.
