  1. The 10th claims two more victimspublished at 23:00 BST 20 June

    Stevens -3, Schauffele E (10)

How many times have we seen that today?!

Sam Stevens only has 77 yards for his second at the par-four 10th, but just like Rory McIlroy and Sam Burns, he flies it over the green.

Playing safe with his third, he knocks it well past the pin and can't convert for par. It's a pity as he had been going along so nicely.

Xander Schauffele, yet again, was in the bunker in two and despite crisp contact, his ball wanders off the back too.

He knocks his fourth 11 feet past and his bogey putt sneaks by on the right.

    Oof, that's gotta sting.

That is just what Scottie Scheffler tends to do.

He doesn't roll over at any golf course.

  3. Birdie hat-trick for Scheffler!published at 22:57 BST 20 June

    Scheffler -2 (15)

Three in a row for Scottie Scheffler! The world number one is motoring now.

It could've been an eagle as well as he made mincemeat of the 604-yard par five as he sat 15 feet away after two lusty blows, but could not make the three and had to settle for a birdie - his third consecutive one on this hot streak.

A reminder that Scheffler celebrates his 30th birthday tomorrow and a win here would see him join golf's immortals as a Grand Slam winner. He couldn't, could he?

Absolutely would not surprise me one bit if Scottie Scheffler rolls that in.

This is some past few holes from him - and that's why he is world number one.

  5. Crucial par savepublished at 22:56 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick +1 (9)

Our American friends could call that 'clutch' from Wyndham Clark as he strokes home a crucial par putt on the ninth to avoid back-to-back bogeys.

He's just wobbling a bit in his long game though, luckily he's been the best putter on the PGA Tour over the past six tournaments and his flat stick remains rock solid.

  7. Kim makes a movepublished at 22:46 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim -2 (10)

    Well played Tom Kim.

A tough start but he's fighting back now, cashing in on a tremendous approach into the 10th green.

He's buried the birdie putt and is up to -2, four off the lead.

Collin Morikawa gets himself out of trouble after scooting his second shot right across the green and off the back collar.

Clipped into four feet and saved for par.

  8. McIlroy in freefallpublished at 22:45 BST 20 June

    McIlroy +2 (15)

Rory McIlroy is shooting himself out of this.

He had a disaster at 15 yesterday, thinning a chip shot into the bunker en route to a double bogey, and duffs his effort on the same hole today.

It rolls back off the green and he takes two putts from there for yet another bogey. Four in six holes and his hopes are all but gone at this rate.

  9. Bogey for Clarkpublished at 22:44 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick +1 (8)

Wyndham Clark isn't a big fan of the bunkers around Shinnecock Hills, due to the little stones that are in them, on purpose mind you, and his feelings won't have changed after finding the trap next to the eighth green, and then only getting his escpae to 40 feet.

He can't make a lengthy par save but does at least make his three footer to ensure he drops just one shot.

There's a bogey here too for Matt Fitzpatrick, who has endured a nightmare start to this third round and finds himself four over for the day after just eight holes.

If not for Clark at 7 under, the leaderboard looks amazing. Sometimes a course cannot legislate for one player being this good.

    Matt, Southampton

Stark difference between this and PGA Tour setups. Are professionals too pampered? This is a phenomenal setup that will allow the best to separate themselves even if the wind isn't quite playing ball.

  11. Stevens clatters the flagpublished at 22:42 BST 20 June

    Stevens -4, Schauffele -2 (9)

    Sam Stevens is dialled in!

After nearly acing the seventh, his approach at eight clatters into the flagstick at the ninth.

It kicks 15 feet to the left but once again he can't get the putt to drop.

Can Xander Schauffele make his? No! It just runs out of pace.

These two are giving themselves plenty of opportunities.

    Rose +4 (73)

Justin Rose was one off the lead after 54 holes at four over in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills.

The Englishman is well off the pace this time around mind and wasn't helped by a double-bogey seven on the 16th, when he found the fescue down the left from the tee box and was only able to chunk it forward another 15 yards.

  13. Kim and Morikawa make turnpublished at 22:38 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim -1 (9)

Mopping up Tom Kim and Collin Morikawa as they round off their front nine.

They've both made the turn with a par at the ninth.

Both are +2 so far today, but not out of this.

  14. Get Involved: A proper US Open test?published at 22:34 BST 20 June

How do you rate Shinnecock Hills so far?

After the last two US Opens here and the expected wind, the USGA played it safe the first two days by keeping the greens slow - and drew some criticism for it being too easy.

Now they have taken the shackles off a bit for the weekend and some people are saying it could get too difficult! Can't win sometimes can you?

This was always the plan though, the USGA's John Bodenhamer sets up the course and said before the tournament they would take it easy initially before increasing the difficulty - bringing the US Open to a crescendo on Sunday.

It's looks pretty tough today, best of luck tomorrow everyone!

But how do you think the course has played? Let us know via our feedback form.

I'd be interested to hear what you think.

Thumbs up if you think Scottie Scheffler might actually be the one who wins this tournament tomorrow.

Thumbs down if you think we're all getting far too excited about a couple of birdies.

Scottie Scheffler is always understated but the way he clenched his fist there was as animated as he gets. That was huge.

Goodness me, is he going to make a big surge to get the one major he needs for the career Grand Slam?

    Are we witnessing it?

  17. Hello Scottie!published at 22:33 BST 20 June

    Scheffler -1 (15)

Here we go! Scottie Scheffler is feeling it now as he backs up that incredible chip-in with a second birdie in the row to dip under par for the tournament.

He's been scratching around all day but that hole out on 14 seems to have ignited a spark in him as he finds the 15th green with a nice approach then rolls in a 15 footer for birdie.

If there's one guy who could make a run, even on this golf course, then it's the world number one.

  18. Sam can't buy a puttpublished at 22:31 BST 20 June

    Stevens -4, Schauffele -2 (8)

Sam Stevens' long game has been exemplary over the first eight holes.

Shame about his putting though. After missing a great chance for a two on seven, he lets another one slip past on the eighth.

After another visit to the beach, Xander Schauffele goes long, chips down to six feet and holes out for par.

  19. McIlroy misses a tiddlerpublished at 22:30 BST 20 June

    McIlroy +1 (14)

    Shocker.

After pulling his second, Rory McIlroy has 50 feet for an unlikely birdie. He nudges it up to three feet and then misses from there!

Thankfully he knocks in the return one for bogey but it's another shot gone. Three bogeys in five holes.

Coming unstuck on the back nine. Same as yesterday.

  20. Last time at Shinnecock - Mickelson madnesspublished at 22:30 BST 20 June

    Phil MickelsonImage source, Getty Images

Who remembers this? In the last US Open at Shinnecock Hills in 2018 the third round saw one of the most bizarre incidents we've ever witnessed in the tournament.

Becoming frustrated with how quick the greens were in windy conditions, Phil Mickelson finally lost his cool and, on the 13th green, saw a short putt miss and then start off down a big slope and heading miles away.

So Mickelson took off with a little jog to catch up with the ball and then bunted it back towards the hole while it was still in motion.

He escaped being thrown out of the US Open and got just a two-shot penalty, and admitted that it was not his finest hour. Conditions this week haven't been so bad....yet!
