    Scheffler -1 (69)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on 5 Live

The way that Scottie Scheffler has got himself back into it has been really impressive.

A 4-4 finish was disappointing for him but a 69 around there with the pin positions as difficult as they are has been absolutely terrific.

The golf course has been so difficult. It's hard to explain the treacherous nature of such short approach shots. It's really difficult for them to get the distance control like we expect to see.

  2. No birdie at 18 for Schefflerpublished at 23:26 BST 20 June

    Scheffler -1 (F)

And that's the difference right now - someone like Wyndham Clark is making everything from 10 feet and in, but Scottie Scheffler, for all his brilliance, is still a bit hit and miss with the putter.

It's only around four feet on the 18th green to get in the hut on two under, but it's a bad miss and he has to settle for a par.

Still a scintillating back nine from Scheffler with those four birdies, but he's left at least a couple of strokes out there with missed putts on 17 and 18. It'd be really interesting if they went in.

As it stands, Scheffler is in a tie for third but still five shots off the leader.

On behaviour, remind players they get well paid for hitting a ball towards a hole with a carefully chosen stick but only 18 of their efforts (out of 70ish) go in. Play darts like that: first throw is from car park into bar, then along the bar, then at the board.

    Just give him the trophy....

Wyndham Clark drops into a deep bunker at the side of the 11th green, but he fizzes an escape up and out, settling inside six feet, and that putter does the rest for another huge par save.

    Rock solid.

  6. Burns misses birdie chancepublished at 23:19 BST 20 June

    Burns E (14)

Sam Burns cannot believe he's missed that birdie putt at the 14th.

Six feet and seemingly straight but he's pulled it left.

He closes his eyes in frustration.

  7. 'Can't complain about where I am' - Fleetwoodpublished at 23:17 BST 20 June

    Fleetwood +1 (70)

Definitely one of those days today for Tommy Fleetwood who eagled the fifth and made a birdie on the 16th but mixed those with three bogeys including one on the 18th.

It means he's not really made any inroads despite being in a tie for 10th.

  8. Magic!published at 23:17 BST 20 June

    Scheffler -1 (17)

Oh my word! Scottie Scheffler is fired up after that bogey on 17 and took it out on his golf ball off the 18th tee - smacking it 376 yards.

After the brute force comes the artistry as he then gets a wedge to dance around the hole, via a clip of the flag, and leave a birdie putt.

    A Fitzpatrick +2 (72)

A really good up and down and nerveless putt from four feet allows Alex Fitzpatrick to scramble a par on the 18th.

His brother Matt is in a tie for fifth two shots better off, albeit it is far from inconcievable that they could end up playing together on Sunday.

  10. Kim saves parpublished at 23:15 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim -1 (12)

We're down to just four players in the red and one of them is Tom Kim who has just clung on to his -1 with a sturdy par putt from seven-and-a-half feet at the 12th.

Collin Morikawa is hanging around too, another par for the Californian.

  11. McIlroy pars 17published at 23:15 BST 20 June

    McIlroy +2 (17)

Rory McIlroy finds the greenside bunker at the par-three 17th but plays a wonderful shot and his ball runs out to four feet past the hole.

And he makes the knee-knocker for par. He's looking well cheesed off, though. Been a desperate struggle on the back nine.

  12. Stevens on the slidepublished at 23:12 BST 20 June

    Stevens -2, Schauffele E (11)

Hmmm, Sam Stevens comes up short at the par-three 11th and that's an unconvincing action with the chip.

He's left with 17 feet for the par and another putt stays above ground. Back-to-back bogeys.

Xander Schauffele, coming off a double, is in the sand yet again but plays a beauty this time to knock it stiff and regroup with a par.

  13. Fitzpatrick birdie - Clark saves par againpublished at 23:12 BST 20 June

If you're all waiting for Wyndham Clark to fold then you may be waiting some time as the 2023 US Open champion really fancies another title and is in no mood to let it slip.

He's not got his best golf by any stretch, but he's doing the two things you need to do at Shinnecock Hills very well - scrambling and putting.

He opts to bump his chip from off the back of the 10th into the slope and roll it on to try and get it close, a more difficult shot but it pays off, and although his putt is slightly off target it takes a long, slow lap of the top of the cup before dropping.

A touch of fortune maybe but Clark's really hanging tough right now - and so is Matt Fitzpatrick as he finally makes his first birdie of the day to get back to level par, and actually now in a tie for fifth.

In regards to punishments for 'bad behaviour' I think it's just ridiculous. Getting a two-shot penalty for throwing a club? Come on, it's sport we're playing here and emotions can run high. Let them express themselves without the worry of getting punished for silly little insignificant things. Get a grip

  15. Burns slips backpublished at 23:09 BST 20 June

    Burns E (13)

Another player slips away from the red numbers and this time it's Sam Burns who loses ground at the 13th.

Very unusual to see him three-putting but the Shinnecock greens are bruising.

    Back to level par.

  16. Big miss! Bogey for Schefflerpublished at 23:08 BST 20 June

    Scheffler -1 (17)

Oh Scottie Scheffler! The world number one was flying but after finiding the bunker on 17 and digging it out he's left with six feet to mop up for par.

BUT - Scheffler's old Achilles heel has always been the putter, and he misses to card a momentum stuffing bogey coming hot on the heels of those three straight birdies.

  17. Clark goes longpublished at 23:05 BST 20 June

    Clark -6, M. Fitzpatrick +1 (9)

You can get a bit too close to the 10th green - as Wyndham Clark shows by belting his tee ball 354 yards and leaving just 65 yards to the flag.

The trouble is the green is elevated miles above him and is rock solid, so this just needs to land at the very front and let it release - but Clark lets out a yelp just after the thin strike and the ball fizzes off the back.

  18. Postpublished at 23:05 BST 20 June

    McIlroy +2 (16)

Rory McIlroy needs to find some inspiration over the closing three holes.

It starts badly, driving into the bunker at the par-five 16th. But he lays up in the fairway and knocks a spinny wedge to seven feet.

This simply has to go in. It doesn't. He must hate this back nine.

  19. Bogey for Kim at 11published at 23:03 BST 20 June

    Morikawa E, T Kim -1 (11)

Tom Kim dumps his tee shot into the greenside bunker at the 11th and, despite splashing out to 14 feet, he's unable to save par.

    He takes a step back.

Playing partner Collin Morikawa is inches from holing a 23-footer for birdie, tapping in for par.

  20. No wonder players are losing groundpublished at 23:02 BST 20 June

Only one hole playing under par - the 16th

Scottie Scheffler is very much the outlier with how well he is navigating the back nine given how difficult it is playing for everyone else.

Only the 16th has been giving anything to the field today - and the other eight holes are all looking pretty grisly.
