  1. 'We need to add quality next season'published at 16:06 BST 2 May

    FT: Hull City 2-1 Norwich

    Norwich City

Norwich manager Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk “I think we were the better team today in this game, but we gave two easy goals away.

“We had control of the game, we scored a very good goal, but in the second half, we didn’t create enough. That’s something we have to work on in the summer.

“We need to add quality in certain positions so we can finish off games because the team has massively come on physically, tactically, we’re also dominating games and playing good football.

“We’re creating enough chances, but we have to finish off the job. That’s the most important part of the game and we’re going to work hard on that over the summer to make it better.”

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has been speaking to BBC Radio Humberside after the Tigers secured a top-six spot. He said:

“It’s a great feeling, especially after 90 or 96 minutes. We saw Wrexham didn’t beat Middlesbrough and it was enough to win 2-1.

“It is emotional for us because we have achieved something our chairman has dreamt about. For the lads as well, I’m very proud of them because they have shown a great mentality.

“In my life I’ve been out of the comfort zone, I don’t like being in the comfort zone. You have to chase your dreams, your ambitions when you want to be successful.

“It was not easy to play this game as we needed a win and for example, after 10 or 15 minutes we were eighth in the table.

“But OK, this is football, everything is possible and we gave everything to win this game. Mission complete.”

Only Southampton's Ryan Manning and Coventry's Victor Torp (5 each) have scored more goals from outside the penalty area in the Championship this season than Wrexham's Josh Windass (4).

Since the start of last season, no player has scored more goals from distance in the second tier than Windass (7 – level with Torp).

Windass curled in a beauty of a free-kick from 25 yards today.

I’d have taken fifth at the beginning of the season but it feels a bit of a let down now. Oh well. Been a very good season of entertainment mind.

  5. 'Play-offs are a great chance for us' - Hellbergpublished at 15:57 BST 2 May

    FT: Wrexham 2-2 Middlesbrough

    Middlesbrough

Wins for Ipswich and Millwall meant Middlesbrough could not have won automatic promotion to the Premier League regardless of their result today. Their draw does mean they drop to fifth and will play the second leg of their play-off semi-final with Southampton away from home. Boro boss Kim Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees:

"There were a lot of good things. I'm disappointed we couldn't win the game.

"A beautiful goal, the first goal. We created a lot of opportunities, their free-kick was unbelievable then they scored a headed goal.

"We could have been better with the ball in some moments. Second half it was something similar I think.

"We did good in the defending but we must do better on all of the transition opportunities we had.

"This (play-offs) is a great chance for us. It's a chance we are doing everything to take."

Wrexham missed out on the play-off places after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Middlesbrough. A win would have been enough for the Red Dragons to finish sixth. Manager Phil Parkinson told BBC Wales:

"We've taken the fight to the wire. It just wasn't to be on the day.

"I don't think we can ask the lads for much more than they gave us against a good side.

"Of course we're disappointed, we've enjoyed the season so much we didn't want it to end, but it has.

"To finish seventh is a real achievement in itself at this level."

  8. 'Everybody's given it everything they've got'published at 15:48 BST 2 May

    FT: Millwall 2-0 Oxford Utd

    Oxford United

Oxford United head coach Matt Bloomfield told BBC Radio Oxford: "I think we were up against a very, very good team who showed in every element of their performance why they are where they are and why they have the chance of getting into the Premier League.

"I thought we were not at our best also, but considering the surroundings of the game it was always going to be a difficult game for us and that proved to be true.

"Our supporters have been incredible. They are an amazing group, we can all see how much pride they take in their football club, our guys are amazing, so a massive thank you to them.

"The players care a lot, they've given us everything I believe that over the last four months since I've been in the building, we're so terribly disappointed to come up short, but I don't think that's through a lack of effort.

"I think everyone's given it everything they've got and unfortunately for us we've not quite had enough to stay in the division."

Millwall head coach Alex Neil told BBC Radio London: "I thought we deserved to win the game, I thought we were comfortable - my only frustration is we haven't scored more in the first half.

"But when you can hear the fans shouting it's 2-0 (to Ipswich against QPR) after 10 minutes, we've just got to remain focused and do our bit because you never know what's going to happen.

"Football lasts 90-odd minutes and we had to make sure that we didn't slip up and we got the job done.

"We did that, so now we're in the play-offs with an unbelievable season but there's still a lot to play for."

Millwall did their job this afternoon in their quest for automatic promotion, beating Oxford 2-0 at The Den.

But Ipswich's comfortable victory over QPR means the Tractor Boys secured second spot.

The Lions finished third and will be in the play-offs for the first time since 2002, though, which is still an excellent achievement for the club.

    Championship play-off race

    Oli McBurnie celebratesImage source, Shutterstock

All three sides in the hunt for that final play-off place occupied sixth place at some point over the course of the afternoon.

12:34 - Middlesbrough open the scoring at Wrexham, dropping the Welsh side out of sixth place. It's Hull who benefit.

12:36 - The Tigers are only sixth for a matter of seconds, as Sam Szmodics' opener puts Derby - who started the day eighth - into the final play-off spot.

12:58 - A wonderous free-kick from Josh Windass puts Wrexham back on level terms but it's not enough to displace Derby in sixth. Hull go behind at home to Norwich, but quickly get back on level terms.

13:11 - Wrexham move back into the top six by taking the lead against Middlesbrough.

13:13 - Wrexham's joy is short-lived, and Derby take back sixth courtesy of a Middlesbrough equaliser before half-time at the Stok Cae Ras.

13:52 - Tom Cannon's leveller for Sheffield United at Derby drops John Eustace's side outside the play-off line again, handing the advantage back to Wrexham.

14:01 - The goal that sealed it. Oli McBurnie finds the net again to send Hull back up to sixth, and with Derby now behind at home to Sheffield United, it's realistically only Wrexham who can knock the Tigers out.

14:26 - Wrexham's draw with Middlesbrough is confirmed, and they wait to see if Norwich can do them a favour and peg Hull back.

14:30 - Hull hold on, and book a play-off date with Millwall by two points from Wrexham and four from Derby, with all three having held sixth place in the live table at some point during the 90 minutes.

Letters and numbers on a page simply cannot do justice to what we saw unfold across the past few hours.

Ipswich struck early and had their automatic-promotion firmly in their own hands throughout, however we saw Wrexham, Derby and Hull City all occupy the final play-off spot at different points of the afternoon, before the Tigers were there when it really mattered.

We all came for drama, and my goodness have we had it.

Oh, and a word on Coventry - their 95 point-haul would have won the title in every Championship season bar the past two.
