Oli McBurnie celebrates scoring the first of his two goals for Hull City.

Oli McBurnie scored twice as Hull City came from behind against Norwich City to book their Championship play-off place on an emotional afternoon at the MKM Stadium.

Hull slipped to eighth before McBurnie bagged his 18th goal of the season midway through the second half to earn the Tigers a 2-1 win, their first in seven games and seal sixth spot.

It had all looked so different when Mohamed Toure opened the scoring with his 10th goal for the Canaries after 26 minutes.

But McBurnie levelled from the penalty spot two minutes later and then added his second to set up a two-legged tie against third-placed Millwall.

Hull owner Acun Ilicali struggled with his emotions after the final whistle and he can look forward to the play-offs, in which the Tigers have won twice promotion twice previously.

They began, however, like a team who had not won in their previous six games as Norwich took control, opening the scoring when Toure volleyed home Anis Ben Slimane's dinked pass into the middle.

But 12 seconds after the restart, Norwich conceded a penalty when Ruairi McConville fouled Joe Gelhardt and McBurnie slotted home the spot-kick in the 28th minute.

Despite being second best, Hull threatened again when Matt Crooks' close-range header was saved by goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic.

The Tigers went even closer when Kovacevic had to make an excellent stop, diving to his left to push away McBurnie's right-foot shot from Ryan Giles' free-kick.

Derby falling behind to Sheffield United and Middlesbrough holding Wrexham presented Hull with an opportunity – and they seized it through McBurnie.

Skipper Lewie Coyle swung in a free-kick and Crooks flicked it on for the striker to score and send the home fans wild.

The drama was not over and Norwich's Paris Maghoma felt he should have had a penalty in the 95th minute before Mathias Kvistgaarden had a shot deflected wide and the home fans cheered like a goal had been scored when Ivor Pandur caught the resultant corner.

'Mission complete!' - Hull reaction

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic told BBC Radio Humberside:

"It's a great feeling, especially after 90 or 96 minutes. We saw Wrexham didn't beat Middlesbrough and it was enough to win 2-1.

"It is emotional for us because we have achieved something our chairman has dreamt about. For the lads as well, I'm very proud of them because they have shown a great mentality.

"In my life I've been out of the comfort zone, I don't like being in the comfort zone. You have to chase your dreams, your ambitions when you want to be successful.

"It was not easy to play this game as we needed a win and for example, after 10 or 15 minutes we were eighth in the table.

"But OK, this is football, everything is possible and we gave everything to win this game. Mission complete!"

'We gave two easy goals away' - Norwich reaction

Norwich manager Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"I think we were the better team today in this game, but we gave two easy goals away.

"We had control of the game, we scored a very good goal, but in the second half, we didn't create enough. That's something we have to work on in the summer.

"We need to add quality in certain positions so we can finish off games because the team has massively come on physically, tactically, we're also dominating games and playing good football.

"We're creating enough chances, but we have to finish off the job. That's the most important part of the game and we're going to work hard on that over the summer to make it better."
