    Hants v Glam 375-1

Codi Yusuf gets both batsmen going early with two loose deliveries in the same over, both despatched to the rope by Kiran Carlson and then Zain-ul-Hassan.

Not quite the start Hants plotted in the team meeting this morning.

Can Kyle Abbott keep it tighter? No, is the short answer as he is clipped by Carlson to midwicket for four.

Glam have picked up where they left off last night and, unfortunately so have Hants.

Yorkshire and Jack White in particular are fired up!

A second Somerset wicket down already and the hosts haven't scored a run yet.

It's a shame for young Thomas Rew making his Somerset debut as he last only two balls before edging to Fin Bean at third slip.

White has four wickets now and he is making a big impact early on day two.

  3. 'Thomas has played a fine innings'published at 11:12 BST 2 May

    Somerset 201-4 v Yorkshire 162

Josh Thomas just hesitated there. So, an early breakthrough for Yorkshire.

Thomas just almost hanging his bat outside the off stump, just taking the outside edge and a good low catch by Jonny Bairstow.

Disappointing for him, but he's played a fine innings.

    Thomas c Bairstow b White 136 (Somerset 201-4 v Yorkshire 162)

Just the start Yorkshire were looking for!

Josh Thomas batted so well yesterday to earn his maiden century and reach 136 - but he can't add anything to his overnight total as he edges behind to Jonny Bairstow from Jack White.

Judging by Bairstow's comments after day one I think there were probably plenty of words exchanged in the Yorkshire dressing room last night and they have reacted the right way by the look of things.

A last-wicket stand of 120 between Worcestershire pair Gareth Roderick and Oliver Hannon-Dalby was the standout moment in Division Two. Their partnership rescued them from 186-9 to post a first-innings total of 306 at Northants, who closed on 40-0.

Daniel Bell-Drummond's century helped Kent to 352 all out against Derbyshire who will resume on 24-0.

Middlesex and Durham shared an even opening day at Lord's. The hosts closed day one on 272-6 with Ryan Higgins unbeaten on 57.

  8. Foxes still in the fight despite tough first daypublished at 10:57 BST 2 May

    Leics v Notts 405-4

Leicestershire’s Ben Green described day one as “a wake-up call” for the Foxes but vowed they are still in the fight for victory in this contest.

Notts closed on 405-4 after being put in to bat by their hosts – not what the home side planned at the toss.

But Green, who took 3-88 amongst otherwise unimpressive bowling numbers, refused to rule out a come-from-behind victory.

“It was a combination probably of there not being quite as much in the pitch as we expected and us not bowling as well as we could," he said.

“They punished us today if we missed so that was probably a bit of a wake-up call for us again.

“But we'll keep fighting out there and won't roll over.”

Notts batsman Ben Slater, who top scored with 178, admitted Notts are in a great position but conceded it had been a good toss to lose.

“To get 400 in a day doesn't happen very often, so we've had a great day, especially being put in after losing the toss. I think we were going to bowl as well, with the amount of grass on the wicket," he said.

"But we are in a great position."

  9. We should have batted says Hants coach Domingopublished at 10:54 BST 2 May

    Hants v Glamorgan 353-1

Hampshire coach Russell Domingo admitted it was damage limitation after a bad call at the toss led to one of the toughest days he has experienced in four day cricket.

Glamorgan racked up 353-1 after being put in to bat by the hosts at the Utilita Bowl.

And the Hants coach said they have already moved into damage limitation mode with another long day in the field in prospect.

“We definitely should have batted. We thought it was going to offer a little bit… but we didn't land enough balls in the right areas in the first hour or two," he said.

“An extremely tough day, one of the toughest days I've been involved in for domestic four-day. We were punished.

“We have to come out well and limit the damage."

Zain-ul-Hassan was one of the chief beneficiaries of Hants bowling reaching his maiden first class century and finishing unbeaten on 131.

"It is great to get the first century. I have had a few fifties but it is good to convert one now. The monkey is off the back with the first hundred, now I have to kick on," he said.

  10. Yorkshire collapse 'unacceptable' - Bairstowpublished at 10:51 BST 2 May

    Somerset 201-3 v Yorkshire 162 – Somerset lead by 39

Yorkshire captain Jonny Bairstow said that his side's performance on day one was "unacceptable" after an astonishing afternoon batting collapse.

The visitors were 115-3 at lunch but were all out before tea with the last seven wickets falling for 38 runs.

“It’s not the first time this season that we have lost wickets in clusters and, frankly, it’s not good enough. The standards we set for ourselves, we have come up far short of so far this year," said Bairstow.

“They have a 21-year-old who has come out and hit 130-odd off 140-odd balls. To be fair to him, he played well, but we were bowling under lights for a good period of the day on a pitch still doing plenty and we need to be better."

Somerset lost three early wickets in reply but centurion Josh Thomas and Tom Abell's partnership has given them a 39-run lead.

Thomas said his maiden 100 is something he will remember for a long time. He will start day two on 136 not out.

“It was very special to score my first Somerset hundred, especially in front of the home fans," Thomas said.

“I would love to go on to 200 tomorrow. Lewis Gregory was fantastic for us with the ball and I’m just glad I didn’t have to face him today,”

  11. Carson & Robinson tons lead Sussex recoverypublished at 10:48 BST 2 May

    Surrey 19-0 v Sussex 358-9 dec

Ollie Robinson and Jack Carson both hit centuries on day one as Sussex rallied remarkably against Surrey after Jordan Clark's five-wicket burst before lunch had sent them plunging to 92-7.

Carson said it had felt special to get a hundred at The Oval and was full of praise for Robinson's batting performance.

“Ollie showed just what ability he has got with the bat, and the responsibilities he has been given as captain is clearly bringing more and more out of him," said Carson.

“When Robbo came in the ball had got a little bit softer and wasn’t doing as much. I told him we could bat on it, and we just tried to knock off the runs in tens and see where it took us.”

Clark was in electric form in the morning session as Surrey made their way through the Sussex top and middle order, but like his team-mates he found it more difficult as the game went on.

“It’s nice not to have to bowl again tomorrow! But, obviously, it’s a shame we could not finish off all ten wickets much quicker than we did, having got them 92-7," he said.

“But the pitch played very well after lunch and, having got through those first 10 overs tonight, we will be looking to get to a big score ourselves tomorrow."
