Part of me wouldn't be surprised if England played one ball and declared. It wouldn't surprise me if they keep Australia out there. We'll see but England were all ready to go out and field yesterday but they had a change of plan.

England batting coach Marcus Trescothick to TNT Sports: "Delighted for Joe Root. The way he has been playing in the last few years, the consistency he's been doing it, has been incredible. Obviously he's got the team in a good position. Afterwards he was quietly happy, sitting in his corner. A special moment for him and the England fans."

On whether England considered declaring last night to bowl at Australia under the lights: "We did yes. You have to manage the time situation and the number of overs. We had to judge it. We made the decision to try to get fast runs. Jofra Archer and Joe smashed a few and that partnership could be crucial.

"Let's see what happens this morning, Any more runs would be great. The pitch is still pretty good. If you look closely there's some cracks there so might be an opportunity to expose that as the game goes on."

If Joe Root was the main character for England in the narrative of day one from the Gabba, there's no doubt who it was for Australia.

Mitchell Starc carried the home side's bowling attack - again - as he claimed six wickets.
