  1. Aus 120-1published at 19.3 overs

Spin for the first time today, and indeed the Test match, as Will Jacks is tossed the ball.

He starts with four byes down the leg side, and then two balls later Jake Weatherald flicks it for four through fine leg.

Not the best start for the England all-rounder.

Ben Stokes is getting that extra tennis ball bounce at the moment.

  5. Aus 111-1published at 18.5 overs

Jake Weatherald's fifty was the fastest half-century by an Aussie opener in a decade.

The left-hander twice flashes at deliveries from England skipper Ben Stokes which keep the tourists' cordon interested.

    Can nelson strike here?

England need a plan B here or they need to tighten it up a bit. We saw the damage that Travis Head did in that first Test, if England don't change it up, we could see a similar story here.

Marnus Labuschagne then peels off back-to-back boundaries off Brydon Carse - smashing through mid-wicket and thrashing through the covers - to end an expensive over for the England seamer.

Jake Weatherald has really taken the game on. That's not a bad way to bring up your first half century in Test cricket.

  11. 50 runs

Weatherald makes maiden Test fiftypublished at 17.4 overs

Jake Weatherald has been excellent here. Back-to-back boundaries off Brydon Carse put him on the brink of a Test maiden half-century and he duly notches it with a casual pull through mid-wicket for a single.

Brydon Carse can be expensive with the ball, but he does seem to have a knack of getting crucial wickets. Come on England!

    Curtis, Chesterfield

No discipline with the bat, no discipline with ball. England do a great job of making largely average Australian cricketers look like world beaters.

Australia have done a good job of putting the pressure back on England.

  15. Aus 86-1published at 16.3 overs

Marnus Labuschagne gesticulates with his hand to suggest the ball is climbing into him off a length after Ben Stokes angles one into him which takes the edge, but does not carry to the slips.

In fact it was a no-ball anyway.

Woke up, read TMS, turn on the telly box, see Head spoon it to Gus first ball I watch. Don't worry folks, I know the power I hold. I've hit snooze and will turn back on in a few minutes.

  17. Aus 84-1published at 16 overs

Australia's scoring has been tempered a little since the fall of the wicket. Lots of oohs and ahhs from England's fielders as Brydon Carse tests Marnus Labuschagne's judgment outside his off stump.

Labuschagne flashes with a horizontal blade at the final ball of the over from Carse and picks up four between gully and point.

There was a bit more moisture yesterday, today it's really dry. The pitch will start to crack.

  20. ouch!

    Aus 79-1published at 14.2 overs

Those unrelenting Australia fans will not let Jamie Smith forget that one.

Ben Stokes gets one to rear up as that uneven bounce is to the fore again and the England captain strikes Marnus Labuschagne on the elbow as he attempts to shoulder arms.

Labuschagne will have a nice bruise there later.
