Third-choice wicketkeeper from Surrey fumbles a regulation catch... Just saying.

    Brydon Carse into the attack.

Former England wicketkeeper Matt Prior has just said on TNT Sports' commentary that the chance for Jamie Smith is a catch he "should be taking".

"He didn't do a lot wrong. Just got done by the extra bounce and pace," Prior said.

This is why England were mad to drop Ben Foakes. Jamie Smith is a walking wicket and probably just cost his team a hundred runs.

  4. Aus 36-0published at 9 overs

Jake Weatherald rubs salt in the wound.

Jofra Archer bowls a short wide one to Weatherald who upper cuts him for four.

He's dropped him! It's an absolutely brilliant piece of bowling from Jofra Archer, he's in despair of that. Brilliant ball, thick edge, gone to the wicketkeeper's left but Travis Head survives.

  6. dropped catch

Head dropped on threepublished at 8.2 overs

    Oh dear.

A peach of a delivery from Jofra Archer which squares up Travis Head and takes the edge high on the bat.

Archer is already celebrating but England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith fumbles the catch diving to his left, perhaps hurried into the take by the extra bounce.

Really good stuff this from Jake Weatherald. Gus Atkinson is searching for those stumps but he's just giving balls to hit.

Yes, Jake Weatherald gets down very very low in his stance. Not quite Eoin Morgan levels of crouch, but still very compact.

It does not seem to impede him, though, as he picks up back-to-back boundaries.

First he whips Gus Atkinson for four through mid-wicket then square drives the England quick.

Jake Weatherald has a curiously crabby technique.

When we get to around 20/25 overs, the ball starts to go really soft. Yesterday it got slower but I think it's more similar to a white ball. The pitch at the Gabba is usually hard and there's much less grass than we're used to so we'll see.

  13. Aus 18-0published at 6.2 overs

Ollie Pope is shifted out to deep square leg for Jofra Archer, possibly hinting at a change of tac from England captain Ben Stokes.

Archer is short outside of off stump to Travis Head who waggles his bat as he beaten on the outside edge.

It's been a decent start from Australia. It's been a bit wayward from Jofra Archer but he's settling in. There's a bit more juice in this pitch for Gus Atkinson, he's looked the better of the two.

  15. Aus 17-0published at 6 overs

Sharp from Gus Atkinson as he finds some steep bounce from a crack on the pitch and forces Jake Weatherald to really get himself in line, rapping the Aussie left-hander on the bottom hand.

There's been little movement off the pitch or through the air but England's attack will need to capitalise on the slightly uneven bounce.

There's no real swing or seam at the moment for the England bowlers. Warm, sunny, cloudless sky means it's going to be a hard slog for the bowlers, it will be tough.

Jofra Archer slips on to Travis Head's pads again and this time the left-hander nudges him for four down through fine leg.

Archer's penultimate delivery to the left-hander is a peach, as he squares him up and beats the the outside edge.

Ferg: Thinking about how lucky we are as cricket fans to have witnessed Joe Root's career. Likely the best and most consistent England batter I'll see in my lifetime.

  19. ouch!

    Aus 10-0published at 4.3 overs

Jofra Archer pings one into the midriff of Travis Head as he attempts to take evasive action. A couple of deliveries later and the Aussie opener is off the mark with a leg glance for two.

Gus Atkinson is getting good bounce but it's short of a length. That ball was never in danger of being caught.
