A little bit of chat on Test Match Special about whether Australia should have picked Nathan Lyon, and whether they will come to regret that decision.

Lyon himself said he felt "absolutely filthy" after being left out of side for the first time in a home Test since 2012.

You'll take that partnership. Joe Root, what a great knock but he has had better performances against better attacks.

Marnus Labuschagne has such good hands. That was hit hard by Jofra Archer, it went quickly and he's pulled off a really good catch indeed there. With the pink ball it's usually quite hard to see but Labuschagne, dived full length to take a really good catch.

Joe Root, an outstanding innings. He stands head and shoulders above all the other batters.

A superb catch from Marnus Labuschagne in the deep.

Jofra Archer takes on a short delivery from Brendan Doggett and the ball looks to be heading to the boundary at pace despite Archer not striking it completely cleanly.

However, Labuschagne makes up ground superbly and then dives full length in front of himself to grab the catch with the ball dying on him.

    England all out for 334.

There's a bit of a waft from Jofra Archer following that boundary as Mitchell Starc teases something a little wider

However, the England no.11 defends and leaves the remainder of the over.

The Barmy Army are revelling in this last-wicket partnership.

Archer is a better player than we've seen with the bat.

This will silence a few Australians.

    Mitchell Starc is next up.

Full and straight to Jofra Archer whose stout defensive shot gets a cheer from the England fans.

Starc's next delivery is a crunching square drive through the covers for four from Archer. Top-order batter stuff.

We all know how infuriating it can be when there's two guys just hanging in there. It just gets under your skin.

Jofra Archer just can't give it away here. Keep them out in the hot sunshine for as long as you can.

I was surprised that they only left three millimetres on the field. The pink ball, once it gets soft it does nothing. Watching that last hour or so when Archer was out there, there was no demons in that pitch I think they could've varied the pace more.

Right, Joe Root has just taken guard at the Gabba.

Brendan Doggett has the pink ball in hand and is at the top of his mark limbering up.

    Let's go.

Joe Root's parents Helen and Matt have been chatting to TNT Sports about their son's first Test century in Australia.

Helen Root: "Everybody has been talking about his monkey on his back. All he will care about is if England win the Test match. He just loved playing cricket from a young age. Exactly what you see is what you get from Joe."

Matt Root: "I was pretty nervous when Mitchell Starc was swinging it about and England were 5-2 and then again when Joe got into the nineties.

"If we can make another 30 runs today and followed by early wickets it would put us in a good position. It's Joe's fourth series here and he is yet to win a Test match. It would be great to go to Adelaide 1-1."
