  2. Why is Steve Smith wearing black tape under his eyes?published at 07:08 GMT 5 December 2025

Steve Smith has come out to bat wearing the anti-glare patches that West Indies Shivnarine Chanderpaul famously wore.

They are believed reduce the glare caused by the sun - and the floodlights in this case - and improve contrast.

Eye black is commonly used in American sports, including American football, baseball and lacrosse.

Babe Ruth, one of baseball's greatest players, used it in the 1930s and seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady famously wore paint under his eyes too.

"I actually messaged Shivnarine Chanderpaul and asked him what his thoughts were, whether he wore the chalk or the strips," said Smith.

"He said the strips, and he thinks it blocks out 65% of the glare. And he also said, 'I've seen photos and you're wearing them the wrong way'.

"So yesterday I put them on the right way."

Find out more about how black eye works and how successful it is.

Archer didn't even turn around when he appealed, he knew that was good.

    He's the dangerman for England.

That looks absolutely plumb. He's been hit on the boot. It was a fast searing yorker and England have got their breakthrough.

Jake Weatherald has been around for a while. He's very experienced.

He does get very low in his crease but it's like he's spring loaded, ready to hit it big.

Gus Atkinson is sticking with bowling round the wicket.

Four dots are followed by the first boundary of the session, Jake Weatherald cutting through point for four.

A dot to finish. Australia are looking very composed.

  10. What's happened so far...published at 06:59 GMT 5 December 2025

Looking for a quick recap from Brisbane as you munch on your cornflakes? Here's what’s happened so far on day two of the second Test at the Gabba.

England resumed in the wee small hours on 325-9 and Joe Root and Jofra Archer managed to add another nine runs before Marnus Labuschagne took a superb diving one-handed catch at deep square to remove the latter for a Test career-high 38.

Root finished unbeaten on 138 (206) as he and Archer put on England's highest 10th-wicket stand since 1951 with Archer's score the highest by a number 11 since 1903.

After a tight start with the ball Archer thought he’d made the crucial breakthrough in the ninth over, when a beauty of a delivery to Travis Head brought an edge.

However, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, moving to his left, fumbled the catch to hand the opener another lift on three - a drop the home fans were quick to remind him of.

Head then threw caution to the wind as he and fellow left-handed opener Jake Weatherald played aggressively during a first-wicket stand of 77.

A huge leading edge from Head off the otherwise expensive Brydon Carse - caught by Gus Atkinson - gave England a much-needed breakthrough as he departed for a 43-ball 33.

Weatherald, however, continued to play fluently and brought up the fastest half-century by an Australian opener in a decade when he passed 50 fifty in 45 balls shortly before lunch.

He is still going well early in the afternoon session and is unbeaten on 64 off 68 balls while Marnus Labuschagne is 29 not out off 35 balls.

Are the Aussies trying to show us how to play Bazball perhaps?

England look like a team that have barely played any first-class cricket recently. Strange that.

A couple of iffy moments for Australia.

Marnus Labuschagne gets a big inside edge and narrowly avoids chopping onto his stumps. Two balls later, Jake Weatherald plays and misses at one, leaving Joe Root with his hands on his head in the slips.

    Two singles.

  14. Aus 131-1published at 22 overs

Jake Weatherald jogs a single for the first run of the session. It's the only scoring shot of the over.

Jofra Archer has 0-10 from his six overs. Can any of his teammates offer him support?

    Up first, it's Gus Atkinson.

  15. How's stat?!published at 06:47 GMT 5 December 2025

    Srinivas Vijaykumar
    CricViz analyst

Only 34% of England's deliveries were on good length (6-8m) in the first 20 overs today, significantly lower than the 47% deliveries on that mark in the first 20 overs for them since Brendon McCullum took overs in June 2022.

The problem at the moment is that the scoreboard is ticking over and very quickly. This pitch is very good, it's coming on nicely. It's probably easier to score runs than it was yesterday. They're scoring plenty of shots and quickly and when you're in that mode, you just want to continue.

The disappointing thing for me is when England have bowled full, it's too full and when it's been short, it has been far too short. They've almost bowled in two halves.

They need to regroup and come out with a better idea of what they are doing.
