On the difference between pink and red-ball cricket: I don't see a big difference for bowling spin. I enjoyed the pink ball and how it felt in the hand. In terms of what it does off the pitch, it is similar.

Maybe more for the seamers when the twilight comes, and it starts misbehaving through the air a little bit.

That is going to be big for England in that twilight period, making the most of that and taking some wickets.

More on his famous one not out against Australia at Headingley in the 2019 Ashes: That total kind came down, it felt quite quickly. It was nice going out there with 70-odd to win. It gave me a feeling of nothing to lose.

Ben Stokes didn't say much to me in the innings. That innings is so good because he played two different styles.

He was under big pressure and David Warner was giving him a lot of abuse in that evening and when he came off he said, "I'm not walking off the pitch until those runs are scored."

I remember thinking, 'Wow, that is a big call.'

It was cool to be walking off with him at the end with him.

On his famous one not out against Australia at Headingley in the 2019 Ashes: My glasses, there was so much sweat on my glasses. I was physically shaking.

I was thinking I have got to face this whole next over off Pat Cummins with two to win.

Then I managed to get that single, and then I knew I was off strike, but also that we were going to hopefully win and that Stokesy was going to whack the next ball.

I struggled to watch it back for a long time - it kind of ruined it for me - it was just awful.

Where was I? Then I realise I was out there. It is crazy to think I was part of that moment.

On the first Ashes Test in Perth: I feel like I need to apologise to the public because I didn't realise how exhausting we are to watch.

It was an unbelievable game, it was a game I thought we were on top of for a long period.

I saw that as a positive. In terms of when I was over there, I didn't feel like we were in any game to win them.

It had a difficult feel to it in that way and then Travis Head played a great innings and made it look more one-sided towards the end.

I know how this team thinks and they will have taken positives from that, and they will be hoping to put that into this game, but having lost that first game, this game becomes massive.

You cannot expect to go 2-0 down and expect to win in Australia, so we need a result here.

On Nathan Lyon's omission for Australia: I cannot believe I woke up yesterday and saw that Nathan Lyon was left out. I was so shocked.

He has such a good record at the Gabba and with the pink ball he is one of the most experienced.

I have so much respect for him as a bowler, and he has put us under so much pressure in the past.

It feels like maybe reacting to how the first Test went and how quickly the game went and expecting a similar pace of the game.

How the wicket is going, it is playing better than what both teams expected. I am sure Australia would love to have Lyon in that second innings.

It's a big role for Will Jacks. For Jacks, it must be nice not to have Lyon play. When I was over there, as a spinner, you have that me against the other spinner.

Jacks doesn't have to worry about that.

Unfortunately for England, Jake Weatherald has powered on in the company of Marnus Labuschagne.

He brought up his maiden Test half-century off 45 balls and is currently unbeaten on 59 (56), including 10 fours and one six.

Labuschagne has 27 (29) and Australia are 130-1.

England's bowling, however, has been poor, with Archer (0-9 off five) the only player with an economy lower than five.

With the ball, Jofra Archer nearly made an early breakthrough in the ninth over, Travis Head edging behind.

However, Jamie Smith couldn't hold on, handing the opener a life on 3 (25) and he went on to make 33 (43) in a 77-run stand with Jake Weatherald before being removed by Brydon Carse.

England resumed on 325-9 but could only add a further nine runs to their overnight tally before Marnus Labuschagne took a diving one-handed grab to remove Jofra Archer for a Test career-high 38.

He put on 70 (58) for the final wicket with Joe Root, who finished unbeaten on 138 (206).

    England all out for 334.

  15. Australia 130-1 at the intervalpublished at 21 overs

Nothing much to report from Ben Stokes' final over before the 40-minute break with five runs added to the Australia total.

That's the lunch break, or tea given this is a day-night match.

Jake Weatherald has spearheaded Australia's response in a confident fashion. England will need to regroup during the interval and find some inspiration from somewhere.

An expensive first over for Will Jacks as Marnus Labuschagne biffs his penultimate ball straight down the ground for four.

England have just enough time to squeeze in one more over before the interval. Ben Stokes will bowl it.

  18. What’s happened so far…published at 05:59 GMT 5 December 2025

Hello to those of you joining us at 6am! Want to know what’s happened so far?

Well, England resumed on 325-9, with Joe Root on 135 (202) and Jofra Archer on 32 (26), and they added another nine runs before Marnus Labuschagne took a diving one-handed catch at backward square to remove Archer for a Test career-high 38.

England all out for 334, Root unbeaten on 138 (206).

Archer was straight back into the action with the ball and thought he’d made the crucial breakthrough in the ninth over, with Travis Head edging behind.

However, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, moving to his left, spilled the catch to hand the opener a life on 3 (25).

Boundaries flowed from his bat following that drop and he put on 77 with Jake Weatherald for the first wicket before he was removed at the second attempt, holing out to Gus Atkinson off Brydon Carse to depart for 33 (43).

Weatherald, however, is still going strong, bringing up his maiden Test fifty off 45 deliveries. He has 57 (54 balls) while Labuschagne is unbeaten on 25 (24 balls).

We spoke about how you counter England, we've got the perfect scenario here. If you get on top of them and make them change their plan, they don't know what to do. We saw in that first Test, they had nowhere else to go. They were panicking.
