I hope someone in the England management sits Harry Brook down and shows him what Marnus Labuschagne has just done. He's just hung in there. This pair out at the crease and most of the Aussie batters just hang in there and notice when the moment is.

Brook isn't young anymore. If he wants to go to the next level, he needs to work on his game.

The England bowlers are looking a bit jaded.

We haven't seen a lot of swing. I thought it was going to be hooping all around the place.

  3. drinks break

    Aus 175-2published at 34 overs

I think we all expected Australia to slow down with the more defensive pairing of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in the middle, but they're still ticking along at a tidy pace.

Labuschagne is slightly fortunate to see an edge drop short of second slip but the next ball is pulled emphatically for four.

Jofra Archer has 1-38 from 12 overs.

    And that's drinks.

The trouble with watching England is that they have too many sloppy sessions. Whether that is the batting unit or bowling unit very rarely do they both click in the same match.

    Stevo, Cheltenham

Need an early 'Smicket' (an all important Steve Smith wicket, considered more valuable than any other Australian wicket).

    James, Cheddar

Did the dropped catch really hit England hard? The Aussie batters really accelerated after that point and haven’t looked back.

Brydon Carse enters the attack and it's all a bit messy.

Australia run two twos, there's a front foot no ball, and Steve Smith rounds it off with a boundary through mid-on.

The environment that England are in gives them the best chance to block out the crowd.

When you're in the team you feel you have the full backing of the side, which is important when something doesn't go your way.

Playing in the first Test in Brisbane in 2021, I had a tough game. I was down at fine leg and people were getting stuck into me, but that's professional sport, and you have to find a way to keep going and play your best game.

However, it is all part of the Ashes experience, and when Australia come to England they get the same kind of treatment.

After Nathan Lyon’s drop in the 2019 Ashes Test at Headingley, in the next game at Old Trafford every time he was thrown the ball he had to endure jeers from the crowd.

    It was relentless…

The Australian crowd will give you chat from the stands, but they appreciate it when you put in a good performance.

  7. Aus 161-2published at 32 overs

Dan Norcross (@7.25) didn't want to call Marnus Labuchagne's leaves flamboyant. I disagree. He is wonderfully flamboyant.

He sways and shouts his way through five dot balls before picking up a wider delivery from Jofra Archer and top-edging fine for SIX. The home fans roar.

Jofra Archer finding the right length to target Jake Weatherald. He's now been dismissed twice facing deliveries fuller than 5m in this series at an average of 5.0.

In the last two Sheffield Shield seasons v pace bowlers, he averages 131 with the cut shot and 102 with the pull shot, while his average drops to 31 when he's not playing off the back foot.

Jake Weatherald v pace in this series

    • Fuller than 5m: 10 runs, 2 dismissals, 77 strike-rate
    • 5-8m: 21 runs, 0 dismissals, 37 strike-rate
    • Shorter than 8m: 59 runs, 1 dismissal, 148 strike-rate

Gus Atkinson, charging in with lots of little footsteps compared to Jofra Archer's long, leisurely strides, sends down another maiden.

England just need to keep it more consistent. It's a fidgety pair out there at the moment.

That break came at a good time and this will help England reset.

After the break, Baz is always big on the team, trying to get one or two wickets as this can ultimately change the game.

They will have a big focus on that, and they will identify the first 5-10 overs after the break as a key part.

They have made the breakthrough thanks to Jof, and it is a real opportunity to make inroads into the twilight session.

Baz has the view from the stands, so he may say something that Stokes hasn't thought of. But Stokesy is so positive and so good at forgetting what's happened.

This is important so he can keep his bowlers in a good place to concentrate on what's in front of him.

Everything Labuschagne does is with great, I'm not going to say flamboyance, more elaborance.

  14. Aus 155-2published at 30 overs

Marnus Labuschagne is showcasing all of his leaves against Jofra Archer, stretching himself into a tall pencil, bat above his head, to dodge one and crouching below the bails to avoid another.

A Steve Smith single is the only scoring shot.

Australia came out as the aggressors, both of the batsmen wanted to get on with it.

England came out alright but then the wheels came off. It's all well and good having these plans but if the boys can't execute with the ball, it doesn't matter.

  17. Aus 154-2published at 29 overs

England will want to see more of that from Marnus Labuschagne, who recklessly flashes and misses at a rising ball.

Australia, however, will be hoping he parks that particular shot. It's quite unnecessary with his side in a good position.

    A maiden for Gus Atkinson.

  18. Aus 154-2published at 28 overs

Steve Smith gets off the mark off his third ball of the day, clipping square and coming back for two. Next ball, he's crunched on the hand by Jofra Archer and is probably relieved to get down to the non-striker's end.

    Six from the over.

In other news, we've got a special guest on the live, with England spinner Jack Leach joining us. He'll be giving his thoughts on the action, insights into the England camp, and more.

He's currently sat opposite me, enjoying his porridge and telling us how it's not the nicest experience to face Jofra Archer in practice.

England are bowling a little bit better now after the break. Getting a breakthrough always helps. They've just got to get back to building up that pressure.

  20. Aus 147-2published at 27 overs

Marnus Labuschagne defends four deliveries before taking a single.

Everything comes to a halt as Steve Smith grinds out his mark, has a look around, counts a few fielders etc. When he's ready, he defends into the leg side and yells "no".
