In Test cricket, you can potentially be out there for over 100 overs and the guys are prepped and ready for that.

Can they bring Will Jacks into the game before that Twilight period to give the seamers a rest?

When things aren't happening it's about keeping the run-rate down.

When Jof needs it he has that extra pace and bounce. Steve Smith is wary of that.

Skills wise, Stokes is arguably our best bowler, he can swing it both ways. If England can get one more wicket before the twilight period, they will be in a great position.

  2. Aus 200-3published at 38.2 overs

Ouch. Brydon Carse catches Steve Smith on his right elbow and the batter immediately recoils in pain and drops his bat. Australia's medical staff scramble into action.

It felt a lot of the talk in the media yesterday of Englands 325-9 representing a strong position was optimistic to say the least! Batting first on flat wickets has always needed more, especially against an elite Aussie side. They, rather than England have employed ‘Bazball with brains’ to great effect.

Just hit a length for crying out loud. This is some of the worst bowling I've seen in a long time.

    Jav, Birmingham

Huge few hours for England. Let's be honest, we've won two tosses, Australia are playing with a rejigged batting order and 3/4 of their bowling attack missing, and they're 1-0 up and well on top in this Test. Are we underperforming? Or as usual do we have to accept when it comes to the crunch, that at the top level, away in Australia, we aren't very good?

Labuschagne was looking so set, with the lights coming on things tend to get a bit trickier. In the last session, it's so important that they bowl well and keep the pads in play.

  6. Aus 200-3published at 38 overs

Ben Stokes is bowling with a huge grin on his face after removing Marnus Labuschagne.

He was on course for a wicket maiden but Cameron Green turned the final ball of the over fine for four to get off the mark and bring up Australia's 200.

During that over, Jofra Archer made a diving stop in the field and got up a little gingerly.

Marnus Labuschagne is someone who is frustrating to play against.

He is obviously a very good batter, and it looks like he has gone away and worked on his game.

It's a more attacking Labuschagne than what we've seen in the last couple of years and he has gone back to how he used to play at the start of his career.

He knows how to get under the skin of the opposition with his mannerisms. Ultimately, he loves the game and he loves the contest.

On top of his batting performances, he is a gun fielder, he bowls leg spin and seamers.

He will do anything to be involved in the game.

England can't believe it because it's a poor stroke. Channel ball, decent length, he's just tried to flick it.

It's a huge wicket for England.

Labuschagne, caught low down. England are jubilant with that breakthrough.

Ben Stokes does indeed break the partnership, Marnus Labuschagne snicking through to Jamie Smith, who pouches a routine catch.

Labuschagne walks off, a little forlornly, for 65 (78).

"Yessssss" says Jack Leach from across the desk.

We've seen around four English seamers and five Australians. The only person who's looked head and shoulders above everyone else is Mitchell Starc. Jofra Archer has had a few decent spells but Starc has been on another level.

  12. Aus 196-2published at 37 over

Another expensive over from Brydon Carse, who now has 1-68 from his eight overs.

Marnus Labuschagne is eating up his short deliveries, pulling him viciously for four and later picking up three off a cut.

Ben Stokes and Steve Smith have a chinwag while the umpires play with the ball, putting it through rings and snipping at the seams with scissors.

  13. What's happened so far...published at 07:59 GMT 5 December 2025

Just joining us? Where have you been?! Anyway, here's what's happened so far on day two in Brisbane while you have been getting your beauty sleep.

England resumed their first innings on 325-9 and Joe Root and Jofra Archer managed to add another nine runs before Marnus Labuschagne took a superb diving one-handed catch at deep square to remove the latter for a Test career-high 38.

Root walked off the field unbeaten on 138* (206) as he and Archer put on England's highest 10th-wicket stand since 1951 with Archer's score the highest by a number 11 since 1903.

Archer thought he’d got England's first wicket in the ninth over of Australia's innings, when Travis Head edged one.

However, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith fumbled the catch to hand the opener another lift on three - a drop the home fans were quick to remind him of.

Head then threw caution to the wind as he and fellow left-handed opener Jake Weatherald played aggressively during a first-wicket stand of 77.

A huge leading edge from Head off the otherwise expensive Brydon Carse - caught by Gus Atkinson - gave England a much-needed breakthrough as he departed for a 43-ball 33.

Weatherald, however, continued to play fluently and brought up the fastest half-century by an Australian opener in a decade when he passed 50 fifty in 45 balls shortly before lunch.

Archer trapped Weatherald lbw for 72 shortly after lunch to give England their second wicket with the scoreboard on 146.

But ominously Steve Smith has joined Marnus Labuschagne at the crease and the pair have continued to eat away at the deficit.

A few moments ago, Labuschagne brought up his half-century off 67 deliveries and he is currently unbeaten on 58 (73) while Smith is not out on 14 off 25 balls.

The mindset of Labuschagne has been excellent. As soon as he went out there, he was busy. Anything that has been shirt, he's latched on to.

Marnus Labuschagne absolutely loves batting in these day-night Tests. This is now his ninth fifty-score (four 100s and five 50s) in 16 innings in pink ball tests.

He's scored 1,009 runs and counting at 67.3 average in 10 Tests.

  16. Aus 189-2published at 36 overs

Seven from Ben Stokes' seventh over, with all of the runs coming in the first three balls.

England look a bit short of ideas with the ball.

With the way Australia are scoring, they will be pretty much level with England by the end of the day.

  18. Aus 186-2published at 35.1 overs

Marnus Labuschagne pulls Ben Stokes through backward square for four. Hmmm.

  19. Aus 182-2published at 35 overs

This partnership between Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne is up to 36 (56) and they've got there serenely.

Ben Stokes is bringing himself back on. He does have a habit of breaking partnerships.

    Aus 179-2

It's not the greatest shot you'll ever see, top-edging Brydon Carse over the wicketkeeper for four, but it brings up Marnus Labuschagne's half-century off 67 deliveries.

He looks around, belatedly realises why everyone is cheering, and wags his bat around.
