  1. Hazlewood suffers setbackpublished at 08:57 GMT 5 December 2025

An injury update relating to Australia bowler Josh Hazlewood, who has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury after reporting Achilles soreness during training this week.

Hazlewood, 34, one of the leading bowlers in the world, has not featured so far in the Ashes series against England, having been ruled out of the first Ashes Test against England in Perth with a hamstring issue.

He has been dogged by injuries in recent years - he has missed seven of Australia's Tests since the start of 2024 - including Achilles problems.

Australia say his setback is a "low-grade issue" and Hazlewood, who has taken 295 wickets in 76 Tests, is expected to return to running and bowling next week but it remains a blow to Australia.

The third Test begins in Adelaide on 17 December (23:30 GMT, 16 December) and is quickly followed by the fourth from 26 December and fifth from 4 January.

Once again, Australia showing us that successful cricket needs more than one way to play.

    Mark, sat at the Gabba

I wonder if everyone is regretting going ever so slightly over the top at our new 'West Indies 1980s' bowling attack after one innings of the series?

    Steve

Think we need to start being realistic here. We’re not winning this Test, or any in fact, because the bowling just isn’t anywhere near Australia’s level, and they’re missing two of their best bowlers.

It has been tough going for England in the field, so far.

There were a couple of big wickets in that session. I think this next session is where we need to make some inroads and swing the game back in our favour. We saw yesterday how the wickets fell for the England side, hopefully the same happens to Australia. We're in for a cracking game.

It is sort of forgetting what happened and focusing on how things can happen. In this session, if they go out with the right mindset and look to put the ball in the right area. I saw Stokesy walking off, and he didn't look happy with himself.

It will be up to England coach Brendon McCullum in the break to bring Ben Stokes back around into his positive mindset.

PitcViz - Bounce Inconsistency Rating (Higher the number, the more inconsistent the bounce)

    Day 1, Session 1 - 4.2

    Day 1, Session 2 - 5.3

    Day 1, Session 3 - 4.9

    Day 2, Session 1 - 6.6

    Day 2, Session 2 - 7.1

With a few cracks developing with that patch of grass, PitchViz's bounce inconsistency rating is now at 7.1 this session compared to 4.2 in the first session yesterday.

Batting in the fourth innings is going to be a big challenge, and the key for England here will be look to reduce the chances of Australia taking a huge lead after this excellent start.

Australia are schooling England in these conditions. The runs are flowing almost Bazball style. The pink ball is soft, light and supposedly dodgy, but the Aussies are taking this game away from England.

    Thanks, Elizabeth.

This session coming up under the floodlights is going to vital for this match, and potentially the series.

Australia are just 106 runs behind, Ben Stokes is just shaking his head as he walks off. That last ball would've been really aggravating, it often sets the tone.

Ben Stokes starts the final over of the session with four dots, interrupted at various points by a yellow-clad spectator moving in Steve Smith's eyeline and plenty of fidgeting from the Australia skipper.

Smith picks up three in the covers before Cameron Green closes it out with a boundary.

England have picked up two wickets in the second session, removing Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne, but Australia are sitting pretty on 228-3. They trail by 106 runs.

Ben Stokes leaves nothing on the field.

He hurled himself so hard that he blew himself off his feet.

  11. Aus 221-3published at 43 overs

That's probably my favourite shot of the day, Cameron Green splitting the two fielders at short extra cover with a beautifully timed drive.

It deserved the full four but a combination of the big outfield and a spirited chase from Ben Stokes means he has to settle for three.

It's also the start of a very pleasing sequence as the over finishes with 3, 2, 1...

With a squirty edge through third, Cameron Green picks up four. Bowler Ben Stokes has a bit of a shout to himself.

    Six from the over.

In the Australia dressing room, Alex Carey is on his feet and doing a few stretches.

We're into the final 10 minutes before lunch/tea/break/interval/20 minutes of quiet reflection.

  13. Aus 209-3published at 41 overs

Ben Duckett, diving to his right in the covers and flinging out his hand, has probably saved a boundary there. It was tidily struck by Cameron Green.

    Maiden for Brydon Carse.

I’ve lived in Australia for 21 years. This is not the worst England team to come down here, but it is the most overrated.

    Jezza, Melbourne

I thought England spent many days in the nets prepping for this. Surely the bowlers should at least get the length right! Easy from under the duvet but ...

After the break, we will be in the dark. Supposedly it's more difficult to bat under the lights.

Lovely stroke! Cameron Green drives Ben Stokes through the covers for four. The England skipper summons the tall figure of Zak Crawley to plug that gap.

Australia so far have scored 36% of runs with cuts and pull shots this innings while England were at 25% in the first innings.

And 61% runs behind square for Australia in this innings so far. It's the second highest for them in the first innings of a home Test since CricViz has collected such data.
