  1. Aus 0-1published at 4 overs

    Another one, another one.

Australia still can't get off the mark, with Gus Atkinson's rising final delivery almost finding the edge of Marnus Labuschagne's bat.

Forget the 172 all out, this is delightful.

England's collapse to keep Khawaja off the field, only to expose Smith and Labuschagne early was nothing short of a tactical masterstroke!

This felt like a heavyweight boxing build up. It's been an intriguing first day.

  4. Aus 0-1published at 3 overs

Steven Smith, taking inspiration from namesake Jamie, attempts a big old waft at Jofra Archer and gets nowhere near.

It's another maiden for England and Archer looks to be in glorious form.

  5. Aus 0-1published at 1 over

    Tidy, Gus, very tidy.

A second consecutive maiden as Gus Atkinson sends down six very handy deliveries to Marnus Labuschagne.

He sends the ball over the opener's off stump and twice has him groping at thin air.

Brilliant from Jofra Archer. England need the bowlers to get them out of this tricky position.

  7. Aus 0-1published at 1 over

Usman Khawaja still isn't allowed back in the middle - stand-in captain Steven Smith walks out to face the third ball of the innings.

The first fall flies down the leg side, with Jamie Smith doing well to collect it, before Jofra Archer follows up with an unplayable delivery that beats everything.

Smith then attempts a big drive off Archer's last ball and gets nowhere near it - it's a wicket maiden for the England seamer.

That was a beautiful bit of bowling from Jofra Archer.

It's been overturned, Weatherald is out! Horrible two balls for him really but Archer has made the breakthrough in the first over.

    Weatherald lbw b Archer 0 (Aus 0-1)

    Oh yes, all reds!

The decision is overturned, and the debutant has to go after two torrid deliveries - he played and missed his first ball.

Jofra Archer, bowling from the same end where Mitchell Starc took seven wickets, has an immediate breakthrough.

    Star quality.

England were leaping around, absolutely adamant.

    Aus 0-0

Jofra Archer has Jake Weatherald sprawling!

  13. Postpublished at 06:14 GMT 21 November 2025

Right then - Marnus Labuschagne has walked out to the middle with debutant Jake Weatherald.

Usman Khawaja was meant to be opening, but he spend some time off the field during England's innings and the regulations say he's not allowed to bat yet.

I bet he wasn't counting on that when he popped back to the dressing room.

Mitchell Starc's 7-58 is the best ever opening innings for Australia in the opening game of an Ashes series.

Those last few wickets are some of the worst strokes I have ever seen, do they think the inner ring is the boundary?

    Jamie, London

Absolutely threw the last four wickets away, just don't understand the approach given the game situation.

It was Bazball without brains. If you look at the last dismissal, in England that's a six. Here in Australia, the boundaries are the maximum size, they need to think about the shots they are playing.

Hello to all the 6am alarm setters.

You've got to admit, this is a classic of the waking up to misery genre.

England were 105-4 at lunch, and lost six wickets for 67 runs in 9.5 overs after the interval.

Someone in the Australian line always seems to put their hand up and this time its Starc. Who will do it for England? It can't be Stokes all the time. This could be a laborious summer kids.

    Betty from down under

Never thought that I'd get the chance to see the whole of England's first innings before I set off for work... Starc has been imperious.
