Mitchell Starc is bowling 140kph+ but he can’t bowl all the overs. Brendan Doggett isn’t bowling that, Scott Boland is bowling 130kph. If you’re facing England’s attack, I’m saying get out of the way. I don’t think Australia bowled with intimidation. It didn’t look threatening.

England need to realise that if there’s a player in like Jamie Smith, the tail can’t come out swinging. Show a bit of cricket nous. England should easily have got another 50, 60, 70 and that could be the difference between winning and losing.

The Australia attack will get better. We've opened a little crack or two with Australia but my message to England is don't allow it to come back together. You've got an opportunity to widen it over the next few days - take it.

For Australia, a couple of starts but never really looked in. Normally day two it gets a bit quicker. It’ll be interesting to see how Australia bowl.

One wicket left - I don’t think there’s going to be too many runs scored. Go out there and try and score quick runs.

The way Australia bowl in this second innings and then they really have to knuckle down and find a way to score and get the scoreboard ticking over better than they had.

Travis Head and Cameron Green put on 45 for the fifth wicket and Australia were beginning to look settled.

But Head pulled Ben Stones to mid-on, and after that the England skipper dominated proceedings, racking up figures of 5-23 from six overs as Australia finished the day on 123-9.

England are 49 ahead. It’s not a lot of runs. The way that England batted, playing all their shorts and gave Australia four or five wickets… chasing 250 might be an easy chase because the pitch might flatten out.

England have got to nail the moment. If England get the chance to win the Test match tomorrow, they have to do it. Don’t let Australia back into this contest.

Australia have an issue but they don't give up. They won't think this is done and dusted.

  6. 'It feels like it was about four days worth of cricket'published at 10:50 GMT 21 November 2025

Australia player Pat Cummins speaking to Test Match Special: "Awesome first day. It feels like it was about four days' worth of cricket, it really lived up to the hype, I didn’t see that coming. It was really good to watch, it’s a shame I couldn’t be out there."

On the wicket: “It’s doing enough, I don’t think it warranted 19 wickets in a day, some of the batters probably wish they had another chance at their shots. The ball got soft so maybe it was a little harder than last year. I had a few bowls last week and then had a few here, hopefully I’ll get a crack at it in Brisbane."

On Starc: “I don’t think he needs anyone else at the moment, he’s on a bit of a hot streak. He was hot as soon as he went out, his rhythm looked great, every time he had the ball he created something.”

On Khawaja: "Usman had some back spasms, he had some treatments but we got on the wrong side of the time which meant he couldn’t open. He’s 100% fit. He looks like he’s moving ok. Everyone knows the rules, maybe we left it a little too long and it hurt us. Back spasms happen reasonably often, he’ll be alright."

"All our batters go about it differently, we just need to find the right balance. How do you make yourself hard to bowl at and how do you get the runs."

"We'll be ready to come back tomorrow."

This is an extension of 2023 for me. The first two games England should have won and didn’t. Australia won the moment.

From Headingly onwards, Australia were on the ropes. And they were on the ropes this afternoon. If you look at that first 20 overs, the amount of balls that went past the outside edge, Australia could easily have been bowled out for fewer than they’ve got today. They did pretty well to get 123.

England should be saying we’re ahead but can we have a little discussion about the last five wickets we lost? Because if the game gets really tight, down into day three, day four, and we’ve gifted Australia 5-12 by being reckless, trying to whack the boundaries…

Mitchell Starc took some big wickets. Crawley got out how he normally gets out, everyone at home knows that but Joe Root was big wicket. He had to get them though because he didn't really have any support at the other end.

I thought Doggett bowled quite nicely, he looked quite skiddy but I still think Starc had no real support.

In reply, Australia lost debutant opener Jake Weatherald to Jofra Archer's second ball.

England's opening tyro and fellow seamer Brydon Carse each took two wickets apiece as Australia reeled on 31-4.

Bowlers win you series, win you World Cups and this England attack, with that kind of pace, on pitches that bounce a bit more, they’re going to trouble Australia throughout the series.

You can scar a team very early in a series. When you feel you’ve got the wool over a certain player’s eyes or a certain set of batters’ eyes. There were some good tactics from England with how they bowled to certain players. The way he went really straight to Cameron Green with his field and threw it out wider and got him out straight away. There were certain tactical manoeuvres I saw today that they’ll take forward to the second innings, to Brisbane, and beyond.

It’s early days. I was here last year when Australia went 1-0 down [against India] and there was a big outcry and they won the series 3-1. I get a sense that that outcry is going to come and it might stay this times. Usman Khawaja has been fantastic but he’s 39 in a few weeks time, facing an attack bowling that quickly, I wouldn’t want to face this attack when I was 30 and playing in my pomp.

England may have collapsed in their innings, but Harry Brook played some lovely shots before he gloved tamely down the leg side to hand Brendan Doggett his first Test wicket.

England bowler Brydon Carse speaking to Test Match Special: “Ben Stokes kept it very simple. We had 50 minutes before tea and I thought the way Jofra and Gus started was exactly what we spoke about as a group. We continued it as a group of five seamers throughout that last session. Stokesy said let’s smash the wicket hard and let’s get as much as we can out of the wicket.

“The group of six or seven seamers in the squad, we all complement each other, we all have different skills and attributes and I think that stands us in good stead.

“It’s put us in a good position after the way our first innings went. I don’t think much will change throughout the game. We’ll rotate our five seamers, try and get as much as we can out of the wicket.”

On Ben Stokes: “Unbelievable. The way he’s trained over the last three or four months to get to this position to be fit and firing. Today he reaped his reward. His character and resilience is something this team looks up to.”

On England’s batting: “We can reflect as a batting group. Even some of the guys that did get starts and runs today, they played in a positive manner. That’s something we can look towards in our second innings."

Mid afternoon, it was pretty awful out there, you just felt oh my god, all that build up and here we are again. It felt same old. Part of the excitement is because they have taken these nine wickets. They've still got a hell of a way to go. They have to bat all day tomorrow so the bowlers can put their feet up a bit.

Things got worse for England when captain Ben Stokes became Mitchell Starc's fourth victim, before the final five wickets fell for 12 runs as the tourists were bowled out for 172 inside 32.5 overs.

Starc finished with career best figures of 7-58.

It was the right decision for England to bat first. England have hurt Australia today, there's been some elbows. That one to Cameron Green went straight into his face.

What is crucial is that England give their bowlers a rest tomorrow. I know the overs aren't high but it's more than just the number of overs, it's the pressure.

If we want them to maintain that level of intensity, England have got to bat for the day.

As more reaction comes in from Perth, let's start to look back at the action from the first day of this Ashes series.

Ben Stokes won the toss for tourists and decided to bat, but Australia were in the ascendancy in the opening session.

Mitchell Starc dismissed Zak Crawley in the first over of the day, with the tourists reaching 105-4 at lunch.

I was delighted [England won the toss and batted]. Every team that's batted first has won in Perth. This pitch does have spice in it on the first day. It's the right decision to get the bat in hard.

We thought England were going to bowl.

I've seen enough from this surface to say 250 will be a good score.

With the longer square boundary here at Perth Stadium compared to the straight boundaries, England in their first innings scored 37% runs down the ground compared to Australia at 22% in this innings.

Archer showed that he's going to be dangerous this tour. Carse, massive hard just bowling it in. Stokes, he does have a golden arm at times, he plays the man rather than the ball.

That success was down to the bowlers today because at the end, it was really poor from the batters.

I think we all need to lie down, that was something quite sharp. With these contests, there's a massive build up and sometimes it doesn't quite live up to the hype, that was not the case today.

There was some brilliant bowling on display here, when England had the ball in hand, the bowlers had to get the batters out of trouble. England had an attack today were all five quick bowlers bowled with skill, pace they were intimidating. Those first overs from Archer and Atkinson was some of the best bowling I've seen from England in a while.
