Playing the pull shot at the Perth Stadium is a big challenge with the extra pace and bounce.

Batters average 27.2 at 146 strike rate - the lowest in terms of both average and strike rate of the five venues in this Ashes.

    Average playing the pull shot by venue - last 10 years: Sydney - 59.6, Adelaide - 43.4, Brisbane - 32.6, Melbourne - 31.6, Perth Stadium - 27.2.

Dogget has his first wicket in Test cricket. It's a legside bouncer that Harry Brook has tried to get out of the way of but there was just a little flick of the glove.

Steve Smith was absolutely adamant, Harry Brook just tried to get out of the way but the bowler had no idea that it was out.

    Strange, strange, strange.

A first Test wicket for Brendan Doggett and he's removed Harry Brook in unusual circumstances.

The England number five drops his hands to duck out of a pull shot, with the bouncer passing through to Alex Carey behind the stumps.

Nothing from the umpire and keeper, the slightest appeal from Doggett but it's Steve Smith who's insistent.

Australia send it upstairs and that's enough for Brook - he walks off before the replays come up, with the ball having kissed his gloves on its way down the leg side.

Harry Brook has been entertaining that's for sure. There's been moments where we've questioned what he's doing and other moments of pure brilliance.

This is Harry Brook's 24th 50 or more score in a Test, he's had ten centuries and this is his 31st Test match.

    Ouch, painful one.

Jamie Smith clips Mitchell Starc's last ball down to the fine leg, where Scott Boland scrambles to knock the ball away from the boundary.

His knee digs into the turf, leaving a huge divot and impeding his effort - the ball runs away for four and Boland is having to hobble off - that's reminiscent of Simon Jones in the first Test in 2002-03, albeit not seemingly quite as serious.

Prior to Brook bringing up his fifty, Smith had scored two more fours, driving straight again and then on the pull.

Meanwhile his third four of the over brings up England's 150.

A first half-century of the series for Harry Brook!

I think 250 would be nice.

I don't really remember any lower order players scoring in Australia.

It is a very, very slow outfield indeed. That would've been a four anywhere else, maybe that puts a bit of perspective on the score.

    Anything you can do, Harry....

Jamie Smith gets his own four with a straight drive, sending Scott Boland's first delivery back past the bowler.

Brook then slaps the ball into a big gap at cover - there's no-one around for miles but the ball slows, coming to a stop near the rope a second or so before long-off gets round to pick it up.

This outfield is very slow - but not an issue in this case, the batters run four anyway.

Harry Brook is such a good player. You're thinking do you just let him run free, let him do what he wants.

  16. Eng 129-5published at 27 overs

    Consecutive fours for Harry Brook!

He shows no fear facing Mitchell Starc, turning the veteran seamer fine and then rifling a drive through long-off.

The England number five then twice drops back to give himself room for big swings, but can't connect.

One thing about the Bashir decision is that England might not even get to day four or five. There's no point in having that spinner if you can't make it to the later days.

Harry Brook has stepped down to pace bowlers 89 times in Tests with 165 runs at a strike rate of 186.

Since records began in 2006 only three other batters have scored more runs with the mode of attack.

Most runs - stepping down the wicket v pace (Tests since 2006):

    1. Ben Stokes - 326 runs at 78 strike rate
    2. Rishabh Pant - 171 runs at 211 strike rate
    3. Joe Root - 171 runs at 69 strike rate
    4. Harry Brook - 165 runs at 186 strike rate
    5. Kevin Pietersen - 154 runs at 92 strike rate
    6. Brendon McCullum - 149 runs at 189 strike rate

Of the players with 50+ runs stepping down the wicket since 2006 v pace, only Pant (211) and McCullum (189) have scored at quicker rate than Brook.

That's heading down leg - Jamie Smith survives.

Australia lose a review, but it was worth the risk in the circumstances.

Smith guides the final ball of the over through the gap between the slips and gully to pick up a first four and get off the mark.
