Thanks Mike. I didn't expect to be watching Australia bat when I handed over to you at lunch!

So the afternoon session featured seven wickets and 82 runs off 19.5 overs.

Just 42.1 overs overall today as we reach tea - we've only had 12 balls from Australia's spinner Nathan Lyon and with England fielding an all-seam attack the over-rate is unlikely to improve.

Time for me to hand you over to Elizabeth Botcherby to take you through the next passage of play.

  3. What you've missedpublished at 07:04 GMT 21 November 2025

Only just waking up? Well, you’ve missed a bizarre few hours of cricket.

I know Australia are batting at tea but England captain Ben Stokes actually won the toss and elected to bat, yes BAT.

England got off to a poor start, with Zak Crawley caught in the slips in the first over, and were three down inside an hour as Mitchell Starc (7-58) wreaked havoc with the new ball.

Harry Brook (52 off 61) and Ollie Pope (46 off 58) did some rebuilding, but with Starc in electric form, England were all out for 172 inside 33 overs. The final five wickets fell for 12 runs.

However, it hasn't been smooth sailing for Australia, with Jofra Archer removing opener Jake Weatherald for a two-ball duck and runs in very, very short supply.

They're 15-1, with Marnus Labuschagne on 6 (33) and Steve Smith on 7 (26). Where's Usman Khawaja, you ask? He'd been off the field for too long in England's innings, so was unable to bat at the start of his side's innings.

    An exciting final session beckons.

Ben Stokes can just hold himself back a bit here, he doesn't have to bowl a lot.

Brydon Carse is slowly coming into it here, just getting warmed up. I think it's perfect conditions for cricket out there, slight breeze, not too hot, where else would you want to be?

  6. Tea - Aus 15-1published at 10 overs

Steven Smith cracks Brydon Carse's second shot into the covers, but the slow outfield does for him and the batters have to run three.

That's the only scoring shot of the over as we reach tea, what a ridiculous session.

  7. Aus 12-1published at 9 overs

This is the first time in almost two hours that I'm getting to write a few standard Test live text entries - it's been a chaotic afternoon session.

Two singles and a no ball off Mark Wood's second over.

Here's Brydon Carse to bowl what will probably be the last over of the session.

  8. Aus 9-1published at 8 overs

Light and shade from Steph and Srini, there.

Singles book-end Gus Atkinson's fourth over, as he finally concedes runs off the bat.

England were bowled out in 32.5 overs. It is the shortest first innings of an Ashes Test - the team batting first - since Australia were bowled out in 18.3 in Stuart Broad's Test in 2015. It is the shortest first innings in an Ashes Test in this country since 1902.

Archer's first spell was his joint-quickest spell in his Test career at 90.3mph - on par with the spell he managed against India in the third Test at Lord's earlier this year.

  11. Aus 7-1published at 7 overs

A quick burst of Jofra Archer and we flip to Mark Wood, who's almost immediately cranking into the 90mph zone.

Steven Smith turns his first delivery behind square and sets off for a single - Ollie Pope swoops onto the ball and fires at the bowler's end... just wide.

Had that struck then Marnus Labuschagne would have been long gone.

    Five dot balls follow.

That was the fifth the longest it has taken a team to score in an Anglo-Aussie series and the longest since 1956.

  13. Aus 6-1published at 6 overs

Steven Smith is OK to continue, and Gus Atkinson resumes with a bouncer that the Australia captain can't get a bat on.

He then finally gets Australia a run at this end, taking a quick leg bye off the over's final delivery after being rapped on the pad.

England appeal but that's heading over the stumps.

Jofra Archer is cranking up the pace as he's settled into this spell, bowling quicker with each over...

    • First over - 87.5 mph
    • Second over - 91.5 mph
    • Third over - 91.8 mph
  15. Aus 5-1published at 5.4 overs

    Stinger!

Gus Atkinson lands a delivery flush on the elbow of Steven Smith's right arm.

Smith flails his arm in obvious pain - the physio is on for some treatment.

You wonder how many England would've got if the outfield wasn't so slow. They did manage to pick up a few threes though.

  17. Aus 5-1published at 5 overs

Ah well, it had to end eventually.

Steven Smith gets Australia under way from the 28th ball of the innings, knocking Jofra Archer into the covers.

Marnus Labuschagne then adds four down the ground from the final ball of the over.

So it goes - here's Jofra's wicket with his second delivery of the day.

England gave a very poor batting performance but they're doing everything they can to get back into this game by bowling superbly.
