  3. What you've missedpublished at 07:59 GMT 21 November 2025

Only just waking up? The Ashes is already well and truly alive.

England have already been bowled out. Their batting was pretty poor to be dismissed for 172 in just 32.5 overs after choosing to bat.

But England's bowling has been superb. Jofra Archer dismissed debutant Jake Weatherald for a two-ball duck and then got Marnus Labuschagne for nine.

Brydon Carse then chipped in with the huge wicket of Australia's stand-in captain Steve Smith. He was caught at second slip.

England batting performance got off to a poor start when Zak Crawley was caught in the slips in the first over. They were three down inside an hour as Mitchell Starc (7-58) wreaked havoc with the new ball.

Harry Brook (52 off 61) and Ollie Pope (46 off 58) did some rebuilding but, with Starc in electric form, Brook dismissal sparked a collapse of the final five wickets falling for 12 runs.

Play can continue to 09:50 GMT.

Steve Smith has had a tough old time out there. They've rattled him, Jofra Archer has been pinging balls at him but it's Brydon Carse, squares him up a little bit, simple catch for Harry Brook.

England have got themselves back into the game.

Steve Smith lets out a small chuckle as yet another Jofra Archer zinger beats his bat. He's leading a charmed life.

He has 17 (46), Archer has 2-7 from six overs.

Well bowled England, absolutely deserved that. He's tried to leave it, hit the back of the bat, then the elbow. Labuschagne has to go.

    England deserve that.

Bowled him! Archer has bowled well in this spell. A painful one for Labuschagne.

Off Marnus Labuschagne's elbow and into the stumps! Jofra Archer has his second wicket!

Out walks Usman Khawaja in the unfamiliar position of number four. He usually opens the batting for Australia but was off the field for too long in England's innings.

I'm happy with this, I do think England have been a bit unlucky. England have gotten much more out of this pitch than the Aussies did. The batters at the crease look rattled and they've really struggled to score.

Steve Smith has been very fortunate in this innings. There's been a lot of flailing and missing, he's going for very big shots.

Steve Smith has got away with that, genuine top edge. You can see he had his heart in his mouth.

  20. Aus 28-1published at 14 overs

A couple of boundaries from Steve Smith. The first is lovely, lapping up a shorter delivery and smacking it through point. The second is a touch fortunate, miscuing his attempted pull and finding a gap between two fielders.

Before too long, he's swinging and missing again. Australia's stand-in skipper has not settled, but he's still here.
