Really hoping that Crawley and Brook can keep a lid on the adrenaline rate, heart rate and take things slowly to get into a groove. Create a bubble out there in the middle and stay in it. Set a blueprint, feel it and remember it.

    Not far from another.

Travis Head offers a fair bit of turn and Zak Crawley inside edges wide of short leg.

That is what Pat Cummins does.

The ball seems to be angling into off stump, you feel as a batsman that you have to play it and then it angles off the pitch.

It is probably a foot outside of off stump.

Oh, Joe Root is furious. He is shouting at himself. Pat Cummins has done him again!

    Joe Root's out now!

Pat Cummins roars in delight, Root punches his bat in frustration - he's edged behind.

Cummins sent down five dot balls to Root then finished with a delivery down the corridor that England's star batter prodded at tentatively - just enough to nick to Alex Carey.

A partnership of 78 comes to an end - out comes Harry Brook.

Ooooh, closer than it initially looked.

The tracking has an umpire's call on impact with the top of the stumps, so Joe Root survives - just.

The England number four follows up with a single sent square, that ends the over.

  7. Australia reviewpublished at 27.5 overs

Joe Root pads away Travis Head's fifth delivery, no shot played.

Head absolutely loves this, it appears to be well outside the line, so would have to turn a fair way, but Australia are going to take a look.

    Well, here's something interesting.

Australia are going to give Travis Head an outing with the first over after tea.

Everything the South Australian has touched has turned to gold lately, so maybe he can break this partnership.

Australia will know if they break this partnership that it will bring Harry Brook to the crease.

We will all be sitting on the edge of our chairs. Who knows what version of Brook we will get out in the middle. England will need him to sit in.

England are showing some fight. We are seeing some very good batting, very measured batting. There's a good balance between attacking Australia's bowlers and having a good defence.

Records are there to be broken. Yes, it is going to be challenging, but you have got to have that belief.

  11. Postpublished at 04:23 GMT 20 December 2025

    Thanks Sam.

Will England's batters be able to re-focus after the interval? The next few overs could be crucial if the tourists are to take their chase deep into day five.

When Marnus Labuschagne held onto that stunning catch to remove Ollie Pope, it felt like this could finish very quickly.

Instead, Zak Crawley and Joe Root have put on 75 and batted very nicely indeed, battling through the new ball and playing the spin of Nathan Lyon very well.

England still need another 329 to win so there's a whole lot more work to do but a session to enjoy for the tourists as Mike Peter returns.

Yet again, that is England's session. They have won two sessions in a row, would you believe it?

  14. Tea - Eng 106-2published at 27 overs

    Target 435

    Sumptuous from Zak Crawley.

A satisfying crack off the bat as he pounces on the width from Cameron Green to lace the ball through extra cover for four.

There's an appeal for lbw to end the over as Joe Root is hit on the pad. Not out and there won't be a review. It was heading down leg.

That brief discussion means the clock ticks to 10 past and there isn't time for another over.

Tea and a 75-run stand between Crawley and Root has, at the very least delayed Australia's charge to victory.

At best? Well, we won't get carried away just yet.

  15. Eng 100-2published at 26.1 overs

    Target 435

Joe Root guides the ball through the gully region for a single and that takes England to three figures.

Big cheers from the Barmy Army.

  16. Eng 99-2published at 26 overs

    Target 435

Change of angle from Nathan Lyon, switching to round the wicket and trying to bring lbw into play against the two right-handers.

With the field spread, Joe Root and Zak Crawley are able to milk the singles with relative ease. Four of them in the over.

  17. Eng 95-2published at 25 overs

    Target 435

Zak Crawley and Joe Root take a single apiece from the first five balls before the former's forward defensive shot sends the ball bouncing over Cameron Green for one more to end the over.

Joe Root has scored 1,332 runs with sweeps and reverse sweeps in Test cricket.

That is more than 500 more than any other player since data has been collected since 2006.

Root averages 66.40 with sweeps/reverse sweeps.

  20. Eng 92-2published at 24 overs

    Target 435

Joe Root gets the reverse sweep out again to add more four to his tally.

It's a delicate one this time, beating the short third fielder to his left and running away to the rope.

A little over 10 minutes until tea.
