England are very calm out there. They are absorbing the pressure, and then they have capitalised on the Travis Head over.

  2. Eng 171-3published at 46 overs

    Runs!

Harry Brook reverse sweeps Travis Head for two, bringing up the half-century partnership from 97 balls, then pulls out the same shot again to get four from the following delivery.

Zak Crawley then gets a boundary of his own, cracking a full toss through mid-off.

    13 off the over.

Zak Crawley and Harry Brook have got to bat till the end of the day. I think with this batting order there is always that fragility. If England lose one wicket, they might lose two. That's what has happened throughout this series.

  4. Eng 158-3published at 45 overs

Mitchell Starc continues after the drinks break, bowling round the wicket.

A reason he may be doing this is because he's twice been warned about running on the pitch - one more and he has to come out of the attack.

Zak Crawley takes consecutive twos off the left-armer, sending the ball through point.

Woke up expecting to hear England's obituary and pleasantly surprised to hear that the game and series are - just about - still alive. Would love to have a close run chase tomorrow, unlikely as that still seems.

Australia relentlessly hammered their line and length in the first innings. The pitch being older, it isn't doing as much for the seamers, the spinners are getting some grip.

England are making Australia work hard and that is what we have been crying out for. It has been one of those days where it has felt a lot calmer in a good way.

    Half a stumping chance there...

Travis Head returns in place of Nathan Lyon and Harry Brook charges the spinner's first delivery.

The ball skews off Brook's pad and goes wide of Alex Carey, meaning the keeper can't collect and whip off the bails.

Brook takes a leg bye, and Zak Crawley then brings up England's 150 with two through the covers.

    Time for drinks.

I live in hope that a famous victory is on the horizon. Then again, I'm going shopping on the last Saturday before Christmas hoping the shops won't be too bad. Which one is more likely to happen?

I have been impressed with these two out in the middle so far today. It is getting to that stage of the game where you start to believe that England might be able to do this.

On the flip side of that belief is the second new ball. Then that becomes a tricky passage of play for England to navigate.

  10. Eng 148-3published at 43 overs

Mitchell Starc returns in place of Scott Boland, but not before the groundsman is called on to pound down the footholes at the end of Starc's run-up.

Five runs come from his first over, including a Harry Brook two through backward point.

We have still got the extra batter in Will Jacks coming at eight. We still have Smith, Stokes and these two batting. All is not lost. We have got to keep plugging away.

  12. Eng 143-3published at 42 overs

Zak Crawley drives Nathan Lyon in the covers and runs two.

It wasn't a clean collection from Pat Cummins, meaning England's batters can complete the runs easily.

Zak Crawley needs to have a word with Harry Brook. Tell him to calm down! There's still another 296 runs to go!

That was sharp. I thought Scott Boland had bowled Harry Brook from the noise!

The bails were off in a flash.

  15. Eng 139-3published at 41 overs

A first four for Harry Brook, cracking Scott Boland through mid-wicket.

Alex Carey does some good work from the following delivery, collecting down the leg side having been stood up to the stumps.

The Australia keeper whips off the bails, but Brook's foot remains rooted to the floor.

Harry Brook brings out the reverse sweep to Nathan Lyon and sends the ball out through backward point.

Scott Boland runs round the rope and does some good work to stop the boundary, with the England batters running two.

He plays the same shot to add another single, and that means England now need exactly 300 to win.

That was a total mess. There was no need to play the shot! You bowl five dot balls to Harry, then he needs to do something.

  19. Eng 131-3published at 39 overs

This time it's Harry Brook's turn to face a maiden, facing Scott Boland.

The England batter tries to scamper a single after falling off sweeping, but is sent back by Zak Crawley, who had also advanced a fair way down the pitch.

Pat Cummins doesn't look underdone. I thought he might have been because of a lack of match practice.
