The first thing we are all going to be looking at in the first five minutes of play is how well Ben Stokes is moving. When he doesn't put himself in the heat of battle alarm bells start to ring.

Even if changes come to the England team after this, the one person who should be retain is Ben Stokes, he remains England's best leader.

For the record, the highest successful chase in Test cricket was the West Indies' 418-7 against Australia in St John's in 2003.

The home side will likely be past that total if they bat for little more than an hour this morning.

The highest chase in Australia - and also the second highest overall - is South Africa's 414-4 in Perth in 2008.

There are international careers at stake. There will be a few people in the England dressing room thinking they need a score to guarantee they are playing in front of 100,000 people on 26 December. Ollie Pope is chief among them and an outside chance of not being in that team would be Zak Crawley and Jamie Smith.

The problem is England have picked a squad that does not leave them with many options. Jacob Bethell is the only spare batter and the likely replacement for Pope, who has fewer Ashes half centuries than Jofra Archer.

It very easy in hindsight to pick it all apart. Ben Stokes has been involved in everything. He didn't bowl yesterday, so he is obviously carrying something - he can't be fit.

He went out with the bat and left every ounce of energy out there. There should be three or four captains out there - Stokes can't shoulder every decision.

There is no doubt over the last three years that this England team have been thrilling to watch.

They have had record run chases where other teams would have batted out for the draw.

But when you're against good bowling attacks, you have to absorb the pressure at times. England need to learn how to reign it in against good teams.

    A 356-run lead already.

Australia have six wickets in hand and, with two days to play, will likely bat into the afternoon to put England out of the game.

But a morning burst of wickets for the tourists and England just about remain in miracle territory. Think chasing 378 against India at Edgbaston in 2022, or 371 against the same opponents at Headingley last summer.

But even if everything goes their way, Ben Stokes' side will face a harder chase that either of those two remarkable matches.

These are the straws, folks, and we shall grasp them as tightly as we can.
