With the Australian side there is no let up with the length. All I'm seeing is the England players push forward.

    Target 435

England's fifty comes up with a single from Joe Root.

But forget Pat Cummins' bowling, Josh Inglis has just provided the most impressive thing of this innings so far with some brilliant keepy uppies with the ball in the covers.

There was even an around the world thrown in. He was born in Leeds, remember, so we can claim credit for that...

Zak Crawley is looking good at the moment, apart from a couple of plays and misses. Between Crawley and Root, they're looking alright.

    Eng 49-2published at 14 overs

    Target 435

A single apiece for Zak Crawley and Joe Root, plus a no-ball, complete the scoring in Pat Cummins' latest.

The Australia captain continues to probe away though and snakes one past Crawley's outside edge.

This has been a brilliant spell of new-ball bowling. How much more has he got left in the tank?

Time for drinks. That might help give Cummins the energy for another one.

A genuine edge, it landed a good metre or more in front of him. It didn't even go close to carrying. Scott Boland is landing it in the right place.

  8. Eng 46-2published at 13 overs

    Target 435

No looseners from Scott Boland with his first ball right on the money and whistling past Joe Root's outside edge.

Root brushes it off and, helped by a slight misfield at square leg, gets two with a flick to leg.

Edge last ball... but it falls short of Usman Khawaja at first slip. Phew.

Australia are in the driving seat without a doubt. Scott Boland is here now, and if there is anything in the pitch he will find it.

After receiving those two warnings, Mitchell Starc is whisked out of the attack.

He'd also bowled six overs in the spell, to be fair. Scott Boland is on to replace him.

The England bowlers bowled well this morning. I thought Josh Tongue was hard done by. He bowled well and picked up a wicket.

Then the new ball was taken, and they gave it to Brydon Carse. Tongue could have had an opportunity to pick up his fifth wicket.

  12. Eng 44-2published at 12 overs

    Target 435

Given that record, it is no surprise that Pat Cummins keeps himself going into his sixth over - and fifth since lunch - of the spell.

Joe Root is happy to get off strike with a single third ball.

A short ball is then pulled firmly to deep mid-wicket by Zak Crawley and he gets back for two.

On Joe Root, and Pat Cummins' head-to-head in Test cricket.

292 runs for Root, and 12 wickets for Cummins.

    Root averages 24 against Cummins.

Joe Root is not going to miss out on those. This is an important partnership here.

Zak Crawley has been very watchful.

  15. Eng 41-2published at 11 overs

    Target 435

    Gorgeous shot from Zak Crawley.

A crunching drive through the covers for four and he then works a single to get to the safety of the non-striker's end.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc is given a second official warning for running into the danger area in his follow through.

He has to be careful now.

And Joe Root is away. On the pads from Starc and whipped to the leg side boundary. A single keeps England's premier batter on strike.

  17. Eng 31-2published at 10 overs

Joe Root comes out to an all too familiar position with England two down early.

He sees off the last couple of balls of the Pat Cummins over but Australia are closing in on retaining the urn.

Well, Marnus Labuschagne had no right to catch that. Pure reflex.

What a catch from Marnus Labuschagne.

This is what Australia would have wanted - get Joe Root out there whilst the ball is still hard.

    Pope c Labuschagne b Cummins 17 (Eng 31-2)

That is a stunning catch from Marnus Labuschagne.

Pat Cummins has his second and there will be no big score for Ollie Pope. Will that be the last we see of him in the series?

Cummins puts the ball in the right area once again, finds just enough move to take the edge as Pope props forward and the ball goes quickly towards the slips.

It isn't carrying to first slip but Labuchagne dives across from second to take a remarkable one-handed grab, just a couple of inches above the ground.
