They... they can't, can they? No. They can't. But... can they...?

    Owen, Maldives

  2. Aus 129-5published at 24.3 overs

When wickets start to fall, they can keep falling. You need someone very calm out there now.

    A little anxious for Australia.

  4. Aus 125-6published at 24 overs

Marnus Labuschagne sat on his knees for an age after he was run out before trudging off. England on a bit of a roll here.

Cameron Green joins Alex Carey out in the middle.

Where has this reckless batting from Australia been all series?

    Uzair, London

    I wonder...hmm I wonder game on.

    Stephen in Melbourne

One final glimmer of hope in a series that only ever had glimmers. We all said we were 100 short in the first innings and I think we've all said that a few times.

That tantalises things a little bit now.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 23.1 overs

    Labuschagne run out (Potts/Smith) 37 (Aus 121-5)

    Gone!

What on earth was Marnus Labuschagne thinking in this situation?

Alex Carey certainly guilty of ball watching after Labuschagne hit it wide of mid-off, but great work by Matthew Potts who got the throw into the striker's end where Jamie Smith gathered and whipped off the bails.

Marnus Labuschagne has his head on his hands. England are convinced he is gone.

  9. Umpire reviewpublished at 23.1 overs

Joe Root into the attack. His first ball and Marnus Labuschagne hits it and sets off.

But he's sent back by Alex Carey and England field smartly.

It's being reviewed but he looks to be well short.

Josh Tongue has been exceptional once again. Rightfully so everyone talks about Root and Bethell after their performances but Tongue is a less spoken about shining light within a difficult tour.

  11. Aus 121-4published at 23 overs

    Target 160

There was a little bit of nip on that delivery from Josh Tongue to Usman Khawaja, which forced the inside edge and the drag on.

The Barmy Army are up and about singing. Hoping.

Alex Carey is the new batter.

That has perhaps given England another little sniff. A bit of pressure on Australia.

Usman Khawaja has played on! He gets a pat on the back from Joe Root and his is having to drag himself away.

Not the way he wanted to end. The fairytale was to hit the winning runs.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 22.1 overs

    Khawaja b Tongue 6 (Aus 119-4)

No fairytale finish for Usman Khawaja...

In his 88th and final Test before retiring the 39-year-old drags on to Josh Tongue.

It's wide of off stump and Khawaja fends at it a little only to see the ball ricochet down on to his stumps.

He leaves to a standing ovation at the SCG.

Marnus Labuschagne is not letting the bowlers get into the line and length where the ball is turning. It is good play.

Marnus Labuschagne is really going after Will Jacks here, trying to get this job done.

A punishing over - runs are flowing.

  17. Aus 119-3published at 22 overs

    Target 160

After that drop Marnus Labuschagne decides to up the ante.

He reverse sweeps Will Jacks for four first ball, then a couple of balls later skips down the the pitch and chips it for another four.

The second of those shots was not cleanly struck but there was nobody in an England shirt who could have made up the ground.

Labuschagne ends the over with a thumping drive through the covers for four.

    Bashir would have been handy…

    Ted in Sydney

After a long 8 weeks we pack our bags tonight. On Row K of the SCG the over-riding sentiment is of an enormous missed opportunity.

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped! A difficult chance but that was the opportunity.

A fielder of Jacob Bethell's quality should have held onto that.

  20. dropped catch

Labuschagne dropped on 20published at 21 overs

    Target 160

Marnus Labuschagne sees off five dots from Josh Tongue then...he flashes a drive which flies to Jacob Bethell at gully.

It's high above Bethell's head and he gets two hands to it. But the chance is shelled.
