Australia won all the big moments. Any time the game was up for grabs - field, bat, ball - they won those moments. The 4-1 score line doesn't flatter them. It's a fair reflection of the gulf in the sides.

England were underneath their potential - too many of them.

  2. 'Long but fruitful series'published at 04:10 GMT 8 January

Player of the series and Australia bowler Mitchell Starc at the presentation: "It feels like [my bowling] is going OK. The body is holding together. It's a great group to be part of, it's a lot of fun. I'm just glad to be playing a role.

"I'm a little bit tired. Scotty [Boland] and I are on the older side of things but we still manage to get the job done. Between Scotty, Nes [Michael Neser] and I, we're told we're not on the younger side. We were a bit tired and sore yesterday. We haven't just used 11 players - it's been all the players and staff. It's been a long series but very fruitful and enjoyable."

On his contributions with the bat: "I got a few out of the middle at the start of the series. I didn't at the end. There's no bigger incentive for a bowler than not having to bowl again. It's nice to put a few partnerships together. Batting with Scotty in Brisbane was a big one for us - to get to bowl with the pink ball under lights. It's nice to chip in here and there but nice to see Heady and those guys do the scoring."

  4. 'Everyone has stood up'published at 04:04 GMT 8 January

Australia stand-in captain Steve Smith speaking at the presentation: "It's nice to finish on a high note. We know the importance of every Test match with the World Test Championship so to get a result here and finish the series on a high is incredibly pleasing. I think it's been a good week, and a great wicket they produced out here. A good five days of cricket. Hard fought and nice to get over the line.

"Everyone has stood up at different times throughout the series - Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc and Travis Head were huge standouts - and that's what makes a good team. Guys standing up in different scenarios and situations. Everyone did their job and we're really proud of that.

"As an Australian or English cricketer it's the pinnacle. We have got an experienced side and played some good cricket over the past four or five years, obviously making two World Test Championship finals, and we have got some guys wanting to get better and improving. It's just a great side to be a part of."

We have been through it with Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum already. Ben Stokes has said that he wants to carry on but for Baz, there have been lots said about him needing to change.

That might be a tough pill for him to swallow. How much does he want to carry on?

  6. 'There will be time for honest truths'published at 03:55 GMT 8 January

England captain Ben Stokes speaking on Test Match Special: "I was disappointed to come off yesterday. It has been a hard fought series. We should have got a hundred more runs and they should not have done. That summed up the whole series.

"There will be a lot of time to reflect on things. We started so well in the first couple of years and now we are eking downwards. That is never a good place to be as a team. The time off after this is for reflection and honest truths. It needs to happen. We want to press on as a team and this series has highlighted there is room for improvement for each individual in this team.

"Too many occasions we have been in a strong position and then let teams back into game. We need to take responsibility.

"It is about identifying moments when to push the game on and thinking about why a certain player is coming on to bowl. We have fallen into the trap on too many occasions. It is not just this series - it is moments of games where we need to calibrate ourselves."

On whether he is keen to carry on as captain: "Absolutely. I have been on this role for four years now and it has been a consistent team. I have a group of men that I have helped to find levels of ability to unlock. We need to put more pressure on everyone's shoulders. Playing sport is about winning."

It is difficult to round everything up. You cannot fluke wins in Australia on these kind of pitches. In England you can be a bit reckless and bowl a bit wayward and get nicks.

Over here you need to earn the right on this pitch. 30, 40, 50 runs aren't enough in Australia. You have to go on and get big daddy hundreds.

England were not precise enough - we dropped about 20 catches. We did not have the patience to get big scores in this heat and Australia did.

  8. 'Cherish every hundred'published at 03:52 GMT 8 January

Player of the match Travis Head at the presentation: "It's special, there's a couple of big names up there. I've always found it tough to bat here. Nice to be up the order, nice to contribute again.

"Every hundred is going to be well cherished. I probably hold the couple at the start of the series when it's on the line and you have a chance to win the Ashes, that was the pleasing part.

"From a personal perspective it's nice to finish the series with runs again. What an amazing week we've had."

  9. Starc wins player of the seriespublished at 03:48 GMT 8 January

The post-match presentation is under way.

Travis Head has been named player of the match for his first-innings 163.

Mitchell Starc wins the Compton-Miller medal after being named as player of the series.

Starc took 31 wickets at an average of 19.93.

Usman Khawaja's been a really good servant for Australian cricket. He’s so nice to watch at his best, so silky. He’s been an important part of this successful Australian cricket team. You just know when the time is right. You wake up and go I’m done. I think the time’s right, he’s retired at the right time.

  11. 'Found it hard to concentrate'published at 03:45 GMT 8 January

Usman Khawaja speaking to the host broadcaster: "So much has gone into it for so long. It's funny the game of cricket is so great. My wife Rachel said to me 'just go and enjoy it' but I wanted to go out there and finish the Ashes with a win. As much as I wanted to score the winning runs, I'm just grateful for one last final win to celebrate with my team-mates.

"I was trying to act cool but the whole Test match I found it really hard to control my emotions. I have prided myself on controlling my emotions my whole career - I haven't really given it away - but I found it hard to concentrate, even in the first innings. My whole career has been process, process, process but I found it hard.

"I am happy to get over the line, especially here at the SCG in front of everyone. I can now finally relax and stop worrying about getting out. I think a lot of times in life we always think about wanting more, what else can we have, but just be grateful for what you are given. 88 Test matches, got to score so many runs, I am so thankful. My daughter said she was happy it was my last game 'because you get more time to spend with us'."

This is what we were craving. Really serious competition. It’s been a brilliant wicket here. If England can develop a good spin bowler, they’ve got the bones of a good team and we saw that here in Sydney.

Australia by far the better team and deserving of this scoreline. Some dejected England players on the plane home tomorrow. The inquisition will begin. Some have held their heads high though.

England are a quality team skill wise. It is adaptability and the mental side of things.

There are a lots of things they did wrong. But Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue brought positive signs for this side.

Well played Australia. There is plenty to be mulled over and scratching of heads in the England dressing room.

This series was littered with mistakes for England. We had chances but we never took them.
