  1. Positive start for Sussex at Hovepublished at 11:06 BST 11 April

    Sussex 28-0 v Warwickshire 267

Ethan Bamber with the opening over at Hove and it is a positive one for the home side batting, six off it.

First ball of the morning goes for four then later singles each as England Lions skipper Tom Haines is going at near a run a ball now.

4.67 now the run rate between he and Dan Hughes, 28 off just 36 balls.

  2. Runner alert at Chelmsford!published at 11:03 BST 11 April

    Essex 149 v Somerset 179-5

Craig Overton 50* has commenced this morning's batting with a runner (Tom Lammonby) at the non-strikers' end in place of Lewis Goldsworthy who hobbles over to square leg.

This could be carnage, stay tuned!

Sam Cook to continue having taken 2-51 yesterday.

    Foakes c Cox b Holland 63 (Surrey 414-7 v Leics)

Early breakthrough for Leicestershire and it's just the man they wanted this morning!

Just the third ball of day two and it flicks off Ben Foakes on the way through to wicket-keeper Ben Cox off Ian Holland...

Foakes thinks it's off his back leg, but the field goes up to appeal and the umpire gives it for caught behind.

  4. Durham number crunchingpublished at 11:01 BST 11 April

    Glos v Durham 456-2

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The Durham scorer William Dobson has been poring over the records on his laptop, following yesterday's total of 456-2.

And since they became a first-class county in 1992 they have not scored as many runs in a day in as few overs.

They did score 456-2, coincidentally, at Lord's in 2002. But that was in 104 overs. Yesterday's total at Bristol came in 88.1 overs, before bad light stopped play.

The next target now is their highest total against Gloucestershire, which stands at 552 and was set at Cheltenham in 1999.

Meanwhile at 21 years and 188 days, Ben McKinney became the youngest Durham player to score a double hundred. He'll resume on 214 this morning. It's still a long way off, but it's worth remembering no Durham player has scored 300 before!

  5. Start of playpublished at 11:00 BST 11 April

And we're off and running for day two.

Weather has delayed the start time at Headingley between Yorkshire and Hampshire.

That one is now due to get going at 11:30 BST.

  6. Defending champions Notts being tested by Glamorganpublished at 10:58 BST 11 April

    Notts 279 v Glamorgan 81-4

Well, we had plenty of action on day one at Trent Bridge with 14 wickets tumbling.

Having slumped to 103-6 and recovered to post 279 before reducing Glamorgan to 81-4, Nottinghamshire might well feel they edged it in the end.

But much will depend on how the newly-promoted visitors react with the bat this morning - with matching the home total their number one aim.

Jack Haynes produced a fine century under pressure to salvage the first innings for the defending champions and Glamorgan could do with a hero of their own on day two.

Perfectly poised for another fascinating day of cricket. As long as the weather holds up of course... a bit gloomy and a the chance of rain in Nottingham this morning.

  7. Dominant Surrey on top of Leicestershirepublished at 10:56 BST 11 April

    Surrey 412-6 v Leics

Jamie Smith raises his bat and helmet after scoring a century for Surrey against LeicestershireImage source, Shutterstock

It's been a bit of a brutal welcoming to Division One for the first time in 23 years for Leicestershire.

After suffering a big 222-run defeat at home to Sussex in the curtain-raiser, they endured a tough day in the field on day one at The Oval.

The Foxes wouldn't have been too displeased after removing openers Dom Sibley and Rory Burns for four and 24 respectively to leave Surrey 42-2.

But Jamie Smith (166) and Ollie Pope (103) put on 200 together and both hit centuries to perhaps take this game away from Leicestershire already.

The visitors need to hope they can withdraw Ben Foakes (62*) and rattle through the tail quickly to stand much chance - and then bat much better than they did last weekend.

  8. Smeed ready to bat at eight for Somerset todaypublished at 10:55 BST 11 April

    Essex 149 v Somerset 179-5

Will Smeed made it from Abergavenny to Chelmsford by 18:00 BST yesterday as we spent all afternoon pondering his progress down the M4.

The form stand-in skipper and yesterday's birthday boy Craig Overton is in with the bat, and Lewis Goldsworthy having scored a century on this ground just two matches back means Will Smeed might still have to wait a while to bat - aware there is not much after Miggy Pretorius as Jack Leach opened up yesterday.

News from Tom Kohler-Cadmore's X-ray is that his thumb is not broken, but he follows Essex and Yorkshire last week in being subbed out in the new Championship replacement rules this campaign.

Jason Kerr explained last night why Smeed was chosen over Archie Vaughan (who opened most of last season and was on as a sub-fielder a lot of yesterday.

“It was volume of runs that got him the vote over Archie," said Kerr.

"Within a club environment we talk about the value of second-team runs and putting pressure on guys and that is what he has done. Archie has been doing well but the nature of him being in the squad means he is not playing cricket.

"So we had the opportunity to bring in someone who is playing cricket and confident coming off the back of 330 runs."

  9. Baker pace puts Hants on polepublished at 10:52 BST 11 April

    Yorks 48-4 v Hants 251

Jake Lehmann says Sonny Baker drives like he bowls but has encouraged him to keep breaking the speed limit on the pitch if not off it.

Baker’s need for speed saw the Hants quick smash open the Yorkshire top order with three wickets in an over as the hosts were rocked to 48-4 at the close of day one responding to a Hants total of 251.

And Lehmann believes Baker can continue to make in-roads on day two if the weather allows particularly if there is cloud cover at Headingley.

“Sonny has got the amazing ability to put energy on the ball," said Lehmann, whose 76 underpinned the Hants total.

"He loves everything fast! His cars are fast, and I think he’s on a speed awareness course for his driving. If you asked him how fast he was driving, he’d say, ‘90mph’.

“We’re in the game. Having them 48-4 overnight, we have to rock up tomorrow. It will be a really important first session, and hopefully the clouds roll in and there’s a bit of overcast.”

Yorks bowling coach Mick Lewis believes his side remain in a decent position in the long-term context of the game.

He said: “They could have easily - the way they're going at one stage - got 300 plus today. But if you’d have said we would bowl them out for 250 at the start of the day, I would have taken that.”

  10. Still doing a bit at Hovepublished at 10:50 BST 11 April

    Sussex 17-0 v Warwickshire 267

Sussex dominated a consequently very slow run-scoring morning session of this match yesterday as they whittled through the Warwickshire top order thanks to wickets from four right-arm seamers of their eight bowlers used.

But Kai Smith and Chris Woakes (batting with both arms and no sling now of course) dug them out of a hole to reach a bonus batting point that seemed miles away at lunchtime.

Once they fell, there was little resistance from the Bears tail, allowing Warwickshire a few overs at Dan Hughes and Tom Haines, but the Sussex openers passed their test, slightly helped by the light saving them facing another 9.2 overs on day one.

With overcast conditions still by the Sussex seaside and a Warwickshire attack with so many bowling options that they could send Ollie Hannon-Dalby out to Worcestershire on loan, do not expect today to be much easier for the home side's first innings.

  11. Division Twopublished at 10:49 BST 11 April

    #bbccricket

It was all about the centurions in Division Two on day one with no less than six across the four games.

Three of those were at Canterbury as for only the second time in Northants' history, their top three all scored hundreds in the same innings.

Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter and Calvin Harrison feasted on the Kent bowling as the visitors closed on 409-1.

Ben McKinney went even better for Durham as he ended on 214 not out at Gloucestershire. He put on 305 with opening partner Alex Lees, who hit 129, and the north east county eventually closed on a whopping 456-2.

In contrast to all these runs, 16 wickets fell at Lord's where Middlesex resume on 91-6, exactly 100 behind Worcestershire's first innings score.

Pears captain Brett D'Oliveira made 75, a score that got better and better as the day went on.

  12. Bashir spark keeps Lancs in checkpublished at 10:47 BST 11 April

    Lancs 351 v Derbys 0-1

Derbys spinner Shoaib BashirImage source, Shutterstock

    Derbyshire spinner Shoaib Bashir

Shoaib Bashir was pleased with his opening day effort but admitted there remains a massive job for him still to do to help Derbyshire over the line at Old Trafford

Bashir’s summer move to Derbys could prove to be the spark which ignites a career that had appeared to flat-line both at Somerset and with England over the winter.

The 22-year-old's 4-76 on day one against Lancashire helped ensure the visitors kept their hosts in check as they posted 351 in their first innings.

“I’m quite young as a spinner and I think we mature quite late. It’s very important to get some exposure to the County Championship and to bowl as many overs as I have," he said.

"I’ve a job to do in the Championship and I’m just trying to contribute to Derbyshire as much as I can.”

Bashir remains in contact with England spin coach Jeetan Patel saying he remains his “go-to man”.

“I have regular conversations with him," he said. "Having some game time is quite nice and getting to bowl some overs at this time of year.”

Marcus Harris made 125 on his return to Lancs from a winter/summer of Sheffield Shield cricket with Victoria down under and he believes his side are in a decent position ahead of day two.

“I think with our bowling attack, we’ve already got a wicket. So I think we could challenge them potentially and have a good day,” he said.

Right. We might be in for a bit of disruption today unfortunately.

There are some fairly gloomy clouds and a bit of rain knocking about across the country this morning - and we could be in for some intermittent showers.

The BBC Weather summary says: "Today will start mostly cloudy, with rain reaching the south-east, and showers in the west.

"In the afternoon, the risk of showers will persist but some sunny spells will develop. Windy in the west."

Fingers crossed we don't lose too much cricket with plenty of games in the balance.

Hello again! Ready for round two?

The first day produced yet more County Championship ups and downs and enough cricket to make you think we will get some results by day four.

Division One champions Nottinghamshire are in a real battle with Glamorgan, challengers Surrey are dominating with the bat against Leicestershire and Somerset look to be in a decent position at Essex.

Sussex will hope to bat their way into a lead against Warwickshire, while Yorkshire and Hampshire are embroiled in what might be a fairly low-scoring but equally entertaining contest as things stand.

In Division Two, Durham and Northamptonshire have been piling on the runs, while Lancashire reduced Derbyshire to 0-1 after posting 351.

And Middlesex are in a spot of bother against Worcestershire, six down and trailing by 100.

Sound like enough entertainment incoming? Welcome along to our live coverage. Play starts at 11:00 BST.
