Usually you see this kind of an effort from fielders on the boundary, but they were slow to react and it's a boundary.

Harry Brook is getting very close to yet another century in international cricket.

  2. Eng 317-3published at 48 overs

Harry Brook with another couple of boundaries in the remainder of the over off Asitha Fernando.

The England skipper moves into the nineties with a deft opening of the face through the gully region.

It's Chuckle Brothers stuff on the boundary from Sri Lanka's fielders for the second on the boundary, though, as they attempt to stop a slap across the line from Brook.

Brook picks up a single of the final ball to keep the strike to move on to 98. A century beckons.

  3. Eng 306-3published at 47.3 overs

My colleague Marc Higginson has just called a powerful drive down from Harry Brook Dhoni-esque in its nature. A strong bottom-handed bosh.

    The England skipper has 89.

Colombo (RPS) has been a tough ground for visiting teams to post 300+ against Sri Lanka in ODIs. In the last 10 years, only India has managed this, back in 2017.

  5. Eng 301-3published at 47.1 overs

Harry Brook with a square drive for two takes England beyond 300.

Sri Lanka's players looking quite weary in the field.

  6. Eng 299-3published at 47 overs

    Three overs to go, Max.

Harry Brook is on 83. It's more than possible.

    Brook smelling a century!

    Max, Gloucestershire

Go on Harry. Get your ton too.

Into the confectionery stalls and out again.

Harry Brook with an almighty heave into the stands for six off Jeffrey Vandersay. Strong wrists from the England skipper, who has monstered his way to 78 off 47 balls.

Harry looks happier today and, in truth, so am I watching him play his attacking shots.

Joe Root is arguably one of the greatest batters ever. Definitely England's best.

    Daniel, Belper

Root is easily the greatest batter of all time and I don't think there can be a debate anymore.

    Will, London

  11. Eng 285-3published at 46 overs

Joe Root hammers Wanindu Hasaranga square with a waspish pull.

The over is bookended by another boundary - this time from Harry Brook. It's a touch more agricultural as he heaves across the line to hit the leg-spinner for six.

Joe Root, thank you. Forget the history books, this here and now we are watching such a special talent.

100 off 100 balls in an ODI. Is there anything more "Rooty" than that?

    Charlie, Salisbury

  14. 6 runs

    Eng 269-3published at 45 overs

Harry Brook is on the attack - having reached fifty shortly before Joe Root had made a century - and he wallops Dunith Wellalage over the cover boundary for six then whips it off his legs behind square for four.

    England motoring.

Innings of responsibility of the highest calibre from Joe Root.

Very consistent throughout this series. He's adapted so well to these conditions. He's been hard to dislodge.

Majestic. Magnificent. Or in the words of the great late Richie Benaud: marvellous.

Joe Root has his 20th ODI century and his 61st overall in international cricket.

  17. Root not outpublished at 43.5 overs

Breathe easy, folks. Joe Root's bat is behind the line.

  18. Umpire reviewpublished at 43.5 overs

Joe Root picks up a single off Wanindu Hasaranga then Harry Brook brings him back on strike.

Root then plays another dab into the off side before looking for a second only to be sent back diving into the non-striker's end.

Is Root in trouble here? The umpires talk a look.

  19. Eng 247-3published at 43.2 overs

Harry Brook nudges Dunith Wellalage for a single to get Joe Root on strike.

But there's a delay as Wanindu Hasaranga receives for treatment for what looks like cramp.

Root has 97. One hit away.

Losing count of the number of times I've seen "sublime Root eyes century" on the BBC Sport website. England's greatest!

    Joe, Gloucester
