    Oh behave, Harry Brook.

A delectable cover drive from the England skipper as he waits until the last minute before unfurling a an appreciable stroke off Asitha Fernando for four.

Brook attempts to upper cut Fernando next ball - and misses - but is able to turn around and watch the ball race away for four byes instead after it died on Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Seven overs to go in Colombo.

I've always wondered how the wet, green pitches of the Yorkshire league could produce the best player of spin in the world. We are watching a phenomenon.

Dunith Wellalage with a somewhat nonthreatening over, carefully negotiated by Harry Brook and Joe Root.

The latter up to 94 now. He'll happily get there in singles.

We need to stop saying maybe England's best, and one of the best in the world, and start saying Joe Root is the world's best modern-day batter ever.

  5. Eng 231-3published at 41 overs

England's measure of spin here sees Asitha Fernando brought back by Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka.

Not much threat off the pitch, although a risky-ish single from Joe Root at the end of the over has he and Harry Brook sweating but the shy at the stumps is a little wayward at the non-striker's end.

    Root is unbeaten on 93.

So this is a different pitch with some timing to it and less turn on offer so England do need these runs but they’ve done very well and pressure is on Sri Lanka.

Let's see if I can do a 'reverse Josh'. That Harry Brook has been dire all winter. No chance of a majestic ton today!

Jeffrey Vandersay is swept by Joe Root which takes the Yorkshireman into the nineties which look not so nervous despite Josh (11:34) thinking I have some sort of hex.

That is extraordinary. Harry Brook has timed his move well and played the shot even better.

Harry Brook is on the offensive. He skips down the pitch to Dhananjaya de Silva and biffs him - inside out - over the top for a huge six.

Just how good is Joe Root against spin?

Of all the great players of spin in the modern era to have scored more than 3,000 ODI runs against slow bowling alone, Root currently averages 72.88, which puts him second behind MS Dhoni.

In true Root style, his runs have also come in a steady and risk-free fashion, with a false shot percentage of just 9.2% against spinners in ODIs. Only Virat Kohli has bettered this amongst the best players of spin in the last 20 years.

Joe Root and Harry Brook smartly interspersing overs of intent with scoreboard ticking. Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga surprisingly kept on but he rewards his skipper with a fairly tight over. Four singles and two dots.

Am I actually seeing England put together a proper 50 over innings? Accelerating at the right times and soaking up pressure by just rotating the strike?

    Jar, Birmingham

  14. Eng 204-3published at 37 overs

    Apologies, Josh.

Harry Brook and Joe Root rotate the strike to pick as they take six from six off Dhananjaya de Silva's over.

More singles than a speed dating night.

Timothy, the “Root smells a century” comment (11:22) is far too close to the commentators' curse bone. Less of that please.

Having skipped down the pitch Harry Brook is then perfectly in position to punish one dropped shorter by Wanindu Hasaranga, and he pulls it through mid-wicket for four.

After Harry Brook's swishing and swatting he decides to dance and it pays off. Brook shuffles down the pitch and hammers Wanindu Hasaranga over the rope for six.

While Joe Root's at the crease England will be looking at a total of 280-300, which will likely be a match-winning score.

Happy to help with your academic studies, Edward.

Slightly ugly from Harry Brook has he attempts to slog a wide-ish delivery from Dunith Wellalage into the leg side.

That will not make it on the highlights reel. Five singles off the over.
