  1. Eng 45-2published at 11 overs

Jacob Bethell is the new batter for England and gets off the mark with a single.

Wickets falling but Joe Root is still there and ends the over with a boundary, getting down to reverse sweep past slip for four.

Both wickets came from the first overs of new bowlers and the successful watchful cricket goes out of the window. The pace is tricky to deal with.

All the good work from Rehan Ahmed, the watchful work against the seamers in the powerplay, he gets one he feels he can hit.

He tries to hit it down and up and he does neither.

Long hop but smashed straight at mid-wicket.

Wanindu Hasaranga has a wicket in his first over but that is a long way from being the best ball he'll bowl today.

Too short, Rehan Ahmed tries to pounce on it but, again, doesn't try to hit it over the top nor get over it and slaps it straight to Jeffrey Vandersay.

A shame for Rehan after a decent start.

Three singles from Dunith Wellalage as Joe Root misses with a sweep to end the over.

Rehan Ahmed's been waiting for this for a few overs now. Fantastic shot.

Dhananjaya de Silva has just thrown the ball up.

He came down the wicket early and he got in the position to hit it with the full flourish of the bat.

  8. Eng 37-1published at 9 overs

    Suddenly, the boundaries are flowing!

Rehan Ahmed follows up that slog-sweep with a flamboyant shot, back leg in the air as he goes over mid-off for four more.

Joe Root then gets in on the act, effortlessly flicking the ball over straight mid-wicket for the third boundary of the Dhananjaya de Silva over.

  9. dropped catch

    Eng 28-1

Chance for Dhananjaya de Silva off his own bowling!

Tossed up by the off-spinner and Rehan Ahmed hammers it back at him. In the air, catchable height but goes quickly and through the bowler's hand for two.

Typically, the next ball goes for four. A slog sweep, timed well enough and into the gap as well.

Plenty of slower balls from Sri Lanka’s opening bowlers. The average speed of delivery over the first five overs today has been 77.9 mph.

This is the slowest average speed England have faced in the first 30 balls (when all bowled by seamers) of an ODI innings since 2019

  11. Eng 21-1published at 8 overs

Dunith Wellalage is on now to bowl his left-arm spin.

Just one from the over as Joe Root drives to mid-on before Rehan Ahmed thumps another into the covers but still can't find the gap.

  12. Eng 20-1published at 7 overs

Here's the key man for England. Joe Root advances to his first ball and works it through square leg for a single.

The way this innings has started, it already feels like how Root goes will go a long way to determining whether the tourists post a competitive total or not.

He's miscued it straight to the man and that is that for Ben Duckett today.

Trying to force the play, not timing it, not controlling it.

And spin strikes for the first time within five balls.

Reverse sweep... straight to the fielder at point.

Spin does the trick almost immediately as Ben Duckett, determined to up the run-rate, goes for the reverse sweep for the second time in the over.

He neither gets on top of it, or under it to clear the fielder and instead puts at a nice catching height for Dunith Wellalage.

Dhananjaya de Silva strikes with his fifth ball.

Here comes the spin. Dhananjaya de Silva is on to bowl some off-spin...

There have been signs in the past couple of overs that Rehan Ahmed and Ben Duckett would quite like to getting things moving a little more quickly.

But so far, their more attacking shot have found the fielders. Rehan times a square drive very nicely indeed to end the over but, again, can't get it through. Maiden.

As for that trophy, Andy, that is an, erm, interesting one...

Three more to the England total as they continue to tick over.

Ben Duckett gets two by making room to hit through the off side and while it's not been a particularly fast start, there have been no real scares for the openers yet either.

Something I want to touch on, the England captain's remarks about the pitch for match number two, I thought he was just being rude.

To claim a pitch was the worst you've played on after you've won a game, we've all seen many a worse pitch than that.

    It's just different skills.

Tidy over from Janith Liyanage but England manage to take singles from the last three balls.

The running has been good so far from Rehan Ahmed and Ben Duckett with the former pinching a quick single after pushing the ball to mid-on for the first of the three runs in the set.
