Joe Root is making the bowlers bowl to him. That is the key. It's very clever batting.

He's played a lot of cricket here and scored a lot of runs in these conditions.

The Sri Lanka bowlers will be thinking about that.

Joe Root and Jacob Bethell content to work Charith Asalanka into the gaps.

    Thanks, Sam.

Jacob Bethell gets down low and clinically cuts Wanindu Hasaranga for four.

A glimmer of a run-out chance off the final ball of the over but Bethell makes his ground following a brisk single.

    Four more for Jacob Bethell.

A back-foot punch through the covers this time but Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won't be too pleased with the fielding in the deep, especially off his own bowling.

The two fielders out there seem to leave it to one another and the ball dribbles into the rope.

England are going well, though, as I hand you over to Timothy Abraham.

  7. Eng 106-2published at 24.1 overs

    Crunched!

Fantastic sweep shot from Jacob Bethell, out of the middle of the bat, in front of square for four.

  8. Eng 102-2published at 24 overs

An expensive over ends with Jacob Bethell mistiming a pull shot out to deep mid-wicket for a single.

England take 10 from it in total. They will want to get as close to 300 as possible and they've established a good base.

  9. Not outpublished at 23.5 overs

    Eng 101-2

    Pitching outside leg... just!

So close but Jacob Bethell survives and Sri Lanka are out of reviews.

  10. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 23.5 overs

    Eng 101-2

One review left for Sri Lanka and they take it for an lbw shout against Jacob Bethell.

Too short from the returning Wanindu Hasaranga and Root shifts back quickly and hammers the pull shot over deep mid-wicket for six.

Only just over the rope but that's the first maximum of the innings.

Charith Asalanka brings himself into the attack to bowl some off-spin, making him the fifth Sri Lanka spinner to get a go today.

There are cries of 'catch it!' when Jacob Bethell top-edges a sweep but the ball lands safely.

Some hesitation nearly proves costly for England but, eventually, the batters decide to go through for the quick single and Joe Root makes his ground before the wicketkeeper whips off the bails.

Four from the over and the partnership is up to 52. England are going at exactly four an over.

  14. Eng 88-2published at 22 overs

    Root 35, Bethell 19

Another over ends with a short ball and Joe Root pulls this firmly as well.

There is a man out there this time, though, so he has to settle for two. Five from the over in total.

I do find it really hard to believe there is no place for Root in the T20 side…

It looked to be outside off stump. The initial decision is confirmed to be correct.

We went through the rigmarole of the review but no cigar.

Yep, the ball struck Joe Root on the hip - and well outside the line of off.

Not out, Sri Lanka lose a review and Root survives.

  20. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 19.4 overs

    Eng 76-2

Joe Root misses with a sweep off Jeffrey Vandersay and, after a bit of chat, Sri Lanka go for the review.

They don't seem overly confident and I think it hit Root outside the line of off but we'll have a look...
