Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 94-5published at 26.4 overs

Harry Brook is taking the attack to Kyle Jamieson here.

A well-timed punch is half-stopped at mid-on and keeps England to two but there's no stopping the next.

Back of a length and Brook manages to flip the ball up and over square leg for four. Tom Latham promptly moves another man back on the leg side.

But not for Ben Stokes, who gets in on the act with a pull shot nailed behind square.

  2. Eng 83-5published at 26 overs

It's Ben Stokes' turn to use his feet now, advancing to Nathan Smith and whipping the ball through square leg for four.

Smith is undeterred, though, and continues to plug away from round the wicket. Just that boundary from the over.

New Zealand will be thinking if they can get Harry Brook out now then they could bowl England out for 120.

  4. Eng 79-5published at 25 overs

    Now that's a nice-looking shot.

Very next ball, Harry Brook's charge might just have knocked Kyle Jamieson off his length and he punches this over-pitched delivery straight back down the ground.

    Four more.

  5. Eng 75-5published at 24.4 overs

It's ugly... but it's four for Harry Brook.

Down the track to Kyle Jamieson and, while trying to thump the ball through the covers, ends up dragging it through mid-on for four.

It says four in the scorebook and we'll leave it at that.

The only think that's really gone wrong for New Zealand today was dropping the catch off Harry Brook.

As we move into the second half of this session, here's a look at the moment that summed up the first...

  8. Eng 71-5published at 24.1 overs

Just a change of ends for Kyle Jamieson, who has replaced Will O'Rourke at the Pavilion End.

  9. Postpublished at 15:01 BST 4 June

An hour and a quarter of play since the restart and despite being shorn of opening bowler Matt Henry, who is off the field after suffering back spasms, New Zealand have been excellent.

England are 47-4 since the resumption with Harry Brook, unbeaten on 28, offering the only real resistance so far.

  10. drinks break

    Drinks - Eng 71-5published at 24 overs

Nathan Smith is back after a short spell from Kyle Jamieson.

He's perhaps the least vaunted of the New Zealand attack but he's bowled very nicely so far today, moving the ball both ways to continually ask questions of the England batters.

Sharp movement back in to Ben Stokes to end the over, bringing a wry smile from the England skipper.

    Time for drinks.

  11. Eng 70-5published at 23 overs

    Stokes 4, Brook 27

Will O'Rourke swings one lavishly away from the left-handed Ben Stokes - proof that this ball is still doing plenty.

The England skipper then plinks a cut shot into the covers and gets back for two before having to keep out an in-swinger from O'Rourke.

That flurry of rain seems to have passed, by the way.

It's been a good day for bowling, this New Zealand attack is excellent.

  13. Postpublished at 14:52 BST 4 June

Will O'Rourke is going to start the seventh over of his spell as the rain looks to have started up again.

    They're playing on for now.

This puts a little bit of pressure on the New Zealanders. It's exposing the weaknesses in the side when one of the main bowling trio is off the field.

  15. Eng 68-5published at 22 overs

    Stokes 2, Brook 27

    Dismissive shot from Harry Brook.

Too full, too wide and he flays it through point for four.

A less convincing shot next ball as Kyle Jamieson bangs on in short. The pull shot loops up and over mid-on to land safely.

Two scored but that was more than a little risky.

  16. Eng 62-5published at 21 overs

Harry Brook pinches a quick single as he drops the ball into the off side and that's the only run from the over.

Will O'Rourke is a little fortunate not to be called for a wide last ball, mind. He strayed a long, long way wide of Ben Stokes' off stump.

That may be wishful thinking, George, especially if your team-mates see this.

Feeling a lot better about an early season leave onto my stumps. May just live it down now...

  19. Eng 61-5published at 20 overs

A simpler time, Jon. One in which hope and optimism of new beginnings still remained.

Less than an hour since the restart and, well, the mood is different.

There is a delay as Ben Stokes is distracted by something behind the bowler's arm and once that is dealt with, England are helped by four byes down the leg side as Kyle Jamieson loses his line.
