    Eng 34-3

    Big inside edge.

Harry Brook survives. And breathe, England fans.

Why do I get the feeling the words "we should have gone harder" might be heard in the near future?

  3. New Zealand reviewpublished at 13.2 overs

    Not another one?

New Zealand go upstairs again for an lbw shout against Harry Brook.

    Let's see.

Standard start for England. Who says we are not consistent.

    Chris, Birmingham

Got to respect the consistency of how bad the top order is regardless of how we chop and change it.

    George, Lincolnshire

  5. Eng 33-3published at 13 overs

Sharp bouncer from Will O'Rourke to welcome Harry Brook to the crease.

The ball was staying very low earlier but the towering Kiwi seamer is finding plenty of life in this surface.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.4 overs

    Bethell lbw b O'Rourke 6 (Eng 33-3)

No bat but that is a pretty plumb lbw. England are in a bit of bother.

A less than brilliant shot from Jacob Bethell. Attempting the big drive with the ball nipping around and he's trapped in front.

Test cricket is back and this new version of England is showing a fair few similarities to the last.

  8. New Zealand reviewpublished at 12.4 overs

    Eng 33-2

New Zealand think they've got their third.

Jacob Bethell with a big drive. Inside edge onto pad? If so, he's gone as it carried to slip.

If not then it's a good lbw shout...

It may not be on his list of priorities but Jacob Bethell would make a good umpire. It saved England losing a review!

    Shows what I know.

  11. Eng 31-2published at 12 overs

Needless to say experienced international umpire Rod Tucker is a better judge of these things that Stephan. Three reds on ball-tracking and a good call by Ben Duckett not to waste a review.

That was crashing into leg stump.

Joe Root is in and blocks his way through the rest of Nathan Smith's over.

I'll be honest, I thought that was nowhere near out...

You always go to your partner and Jacob Bethell rushed into a difficult situation there. I'm surprised they didn't review that.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 11.3 overs

    Duckett lbw b Smith 19 (Eng 31-2)

    Pinned in front!

Nathan Smith gets one to nip back to Ben Duckett, who had punched the previous ball through point for four, and raps him on the back leg.

It looked close and it is slightly surprising that the England opener, after a chat with Jacob Bethell, opts not to review.

Maybe umpire's call but New Zealand have their second and here comes Joe Root.

  15. Postpublished at 13:49 BST 4 June

A quick update to what we were previously told. Rather than 84 overs left in the day, there were 75 remaining when play restarted.

We've had one of those so the mathematicians among you will have figured out that there are another 74 still to be bowled.

  16. Eng 27-1published at 11 overs

Ben Duckett drives through the covers but doesn't quite middle it, meaning the ball pulls up just short of the boundary cushion.

They get back for three before Jacob Bethell sees off the remainder of the Will O'Rourke over.

In recent years, Lord's has seen the lowest bounce (from a good length) among all English Test venues.

Average height for good length balls passing the stumps since 2022:

    • 83 cm - Trent Bridge
    • 79 cm - Headingley
    • 77 cm - Old Trafford
    • 76 cm - Edgbaston
    • 75 cm - The Oval
    • 73 cm - Lord's
  18. Eng 24-1published at 10.1 overs

No Matt Henry but Will O'Rourke is in to bowl for the first time today and the big seamer beats Ben Duckett with a good ball from round the wicket that bounces more than most did before the break.

  19. Postpublished at 13:44 BST 4 June

Big blow for New Zealand ahead of this session, opening bowler Matt Henry suffered back spasms during that first stint before the rain and is off the field.

He'll be monitored for the rest of the day to see whether he'll be able to return.

Right then, the players are making their way back out. We're almost ready to go.

England will resume on 24-1. There were good conditions for bowling earlier, I'd imagine that'll still be the case now so work for Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell to do.
