The hover cover has just been brought out but hopefully it's just a shower, as they don't look in much of a rush to bring the rest of the covers out for the bowlers' run-ups.

England captain Ben Stokes: "Yeah, we'd have had a bowl as well.

"It's always amazing to see someone [Emilio Gay] get their first cap for England and we had Alastair Cook come and do the presentation, obviously another left handed opener. It was a special moment for him and his family.

"We weren't too sure about the weather so we gave ourselves an opportunity to change the 12 if we needed to. Sonny Baker misses out from that 12 today.

"We're going out there and looking to play the cricket that we have been known for but we want to win the next six games we've got coming up."

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "We're going to have a bowl, obviously with weather around, hopefully we can make use of ball first up. It's exciting to get into the Test, a long time coming.

"It's a good surface, regardless of batting or bowling first, we'll assess conditions and be on the mark straight away.

"We've had really good preparations last week versus Ireland and good training camp back home in Lincoln. We've prepared really well and are excited to get into it."

That forecast looks decidedly grim but it's all dry for now at Lord's and the sun was even trying to force its way through the clouds as I made my way into the ground a little earlier.

Maybe we'll get more play than we thought today...?

    Breaking

Tom Latham gets his way at the toss and unsurprisingly chooses to bowl first, considering the rain around.

England's new opener Emilio Gay will be called straight into action!

Okay, maybe I was a little ambitious with my use of the word summer.

Here's a glimpse at the weather forecast in London for today - but it is currently dry so for now, it looks like we'll be starting on time.
