Have your say on England men this summer

  1. Eng 117-8published at 32 overs

Josh Tongue is away with a boundary first ball.

Sure, it was an inside edge that just barely missed off stump but they all count.

England will certainly think so in this situation. Good over from Nathan Smith.

And here comes Will O'Rourke to try and knock over the tail.

It's a very useful half century from Harry Brook in the circumstances. It was his third opportunity to be dismissed and finally New Zealand took it.

    Brook c Jamieson b Smith 56 (Eng 113-8)

That's the end of that then.

Banged in a little short by Nathan Smith, the ball is heading down leg and Harry Brook tries to help it on its way over fine leg.

However, he doesn't get enough of it and the hulking figure of Kyle Jamieson is there waiting to take the catch a couple of yards off the rope.

New Zealand need two more wickets to wrap up the innings.

Time for Harry Brook to up the ante?

Quite possibly. He starts this Nathan Smith over by walloping the ball through mid-wicket for four.

OK, definitely. Down the track and a wild swipe at thin air next ball.

Another good delivery, just putting it in the right areas, using the slope. They've done well, New Zealand. They've used the conditions and haven't got carried away, that creates chances.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 31 overs

    Atkinson lbw b Jamieson 4 (Eng 108-7)

Odd review because that is plumb.

No bat involved and crashing into the stumps.

Full ball from Kyle Jamieson and that does the trick.

Gus Atkinson departs and out walks Ollie Robinson on his return to the England Test side.

    Eng 108-6

Gus Atkinson is given out lbw after being hit in front by Kyle Jamieson but reviews very quickly.

Harry Brook is averaging 81.2 against New Zealand in Tests with three hundreds and four fifties. Only against Pakistan (84.1) he averages more.

50 for Brookpublished at 30.3 overs

    Eng 107-6

He's had a couple of big moments of good fortune - and Harry Brook has made the most of them to reach his fifty from 64 balls.

He gets there with a slightly streaky boundary, a rising delivery sent between the slips and gully by a thick outside edge.

Brook is doing is bit for England, though. He holds the key to the rest of this innings.

  10. Eng 102-6published at 30 overs

Harry Brook gets in a tangle early in the over, perhaps stuck in two minds a little after so nearly throwing away a good start in the previous over.

He quickly settles down again, though, and takes a single to point before a leg bye completes the scoring for the over.

Still nearly three-quarters of an hour before tea in this extended afternoon session.

Since the start of 2024, Ben Stokes is averaging 28.46 when batting in the top seven. The only batters to average less in that time (min 30 innings) are Marnus Labuschagne and Alick Athanaze.

Big cheers for Rachin Ravindra as he has to walk back out to the boundary after that horrible drop.

The Lord's crowd are often seen as more forgiving that others in the country. Not on this occasion.

Harry Brook has got to make these chances count now.

I'm thinking of a hundred Harry Brook got against New Zealand in Christchurch, when he was dropped four times.

That's a terrible drop, how much more simple could that have been?

    Eng 100-6

    Goodness gracious me!

Rachin Ravindra has dropped a dolly on the square leg boundary - and it's another life for Harry Brook.

New Zealand set the plan perfectly, knowing Brook was still trying to get after Kyle Jamieson.

He does, whipping the ball straight to Ravindra in the deep. But, for some reason, the fielder jumps a little as the ball comes to him and drops it!

It arrived to him around his midriff so why on earth was he jumping?

Harry Brook has scored 213 runs against pacers at a strike rate of 184 by charging down the track. No other batter has scored as many runs at that rate by doing so since Brook's Test debut.

  17. Eng 99-6published at 28 overs

Gus Atkinson is off the mark with a nice shot, straight back down the ground off Nathan Smith.

He gets three for it as the fielder reels it in just before it reaches the rope.

For England fans scrabbling around for reasons to be optimistic, it is worth remembering that Atkinson does have a Test century on this ground.

  18. Eng 94-6published at 27 overs

That wicket ends a 39-run partnership that was just starting to get going.

Crucial breakthrough for New Zealand and England, who might have been starting to feel a little more comfortable, are reminded that they are still in a fairly deep hole.

Gus Atkinson is the new batter for the hosts.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 26.5 overs

    Stokes c Williamson b Jamieson 12 (Eng 94-6)

    Kane Williamson, that is outrageous!

A stunning catch from the former Black Caps skipper after Kyle Jamieson finds Ben Stokes' outside edge.

A bit of extra bounce again from the seamer to get the nick and Williamson dives to his right from third slip to take a magnificent one-handed grab. Inches off the deck.
